One loop. One river. A whole lot of miles. What happens when a runDisney community takes over a relay event in New Jersey and decides the real finish line is friendship, not pace? We’re joined by Greg, Jack, Chrissie, Ilyana, and Stephen to recap Loopy Looper weekend, where teams rack up loops, tents turn into mini HQs, and every lap feels like a mix of training run and backyard party.

We talk through the details that make a looped relay and ultra event work: simple course navigation, timing-bib handoffs that do not waste energy, and the heat management basics that matter most in August humidity. You’ll hear what people actually ate and drank, why salt and pickle juice became MVPs, and how run-walk-run plus strength training can leave your legs surprisingly OK after big mileage.

Then Stephen drops the kind of story that makes you sit up straight: a first ultramarathon that’s also a 100-miler, finished inside the 30-hour cutoff, with tight aid-station discipline and a clear goal of staying healthy. We also share the glow loop night run, family finish moments, and why so many runners say the solo miles are great but the relay “party” is the point.

If you’re training for runDisney, curious about relay races, or wondering how to keep motivation high in the offseason, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share the show with a running friend, and leave a review telling us: would you ever try a loop event like Loopy Looper?

Patreon Gifts From Hong Kong

SPEAKER_15

And we have something very special for you guys. We're going to be putting your guys' name in a hat. And um we're going to hand out some special gifts. I'm very excited to say that these gifts come from halfway around the world. Technically, well, I guess there's everybody. There's a few people from different countries. Yeah. But um essentially, uh, my husband and I, we had not gone on our honeymoon and we only had a small time to go on this trip. So we called it a mini moon since we only were there for two days. But um we went to Hong Kong Disneyland and I was like, hey, you guys, we should do some Patreon gifts, and so we did. So um I got some gifts for you guys that we'll put your name in a hat for. We have a 20th anniversary um special Hong Kong Disneyland ears, Mickey Ears. We have some really cool pins, and um, we have a Hong Kong Disneyland World of Frozen mug, which I'm really excited about. But yeah, we'll go ahead and put you guys' name in a hat. And if you win, well, you'll find out. Greg says something I might be doing a video for you guys, so this should be entertaining. But yes, we'll uh we'll go ahead and choose some names and we'll let you guys know if you've won.

SPEAKER_09

Thanks for doing that, Jack. That's cool.

SPEAKER_11

Quick Correction And Condolences

SPEAKER_09

Hey, I wanted to clarify something. I uh our friend uh Jenny sent me a note. Now, last week in Race Report, we talked about that really cool race they had over in London, the Hercules 5K. And Jenny and her daughter Freya had posted that they did the Hercules 5K virtually. Well, I just put two and two together. I figured it was the same race, they had a virtual option. Oh, nay nay. What Jenny and Freya did was the uh virtual Disney Hercules 5K. So not that there's anything sinister or particularly inaccurate, but I just wanted to correct the record there. We also, and from time to time these things happen, and I feel sorry, but I want to uh extend our deepest condolences as a Rise and Run family to our dear friend Adallus from the hashtag Rundope Group, who lost her mother last week. Adallis, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. We still look forward to seeing you at upcoming Run Disney events.

Training Timelines And Key Dates

SPEAKER_09

Well, speaking of upcoming Run Disney events, look at the look at the training schedule. Wine and I, eleven weeks away. And we are in training week number seven. Three miles, one of which should be a magic mile this week. Get that magic mile yardstick, that measuring tool to determine what your what your best paces for training and maybe best run-walk-run ratios would be. Marathon Weekend! Still a little ways out. Nearly 22 weeks until uh 5k day. Training week number six for marathon weekend. If you're doing one of the long events, you're up to seven miles. Numbers are starting to creep up there. It's still hot. Remember, on these long runs, remember you've got a speed limit. All right. It's it goes slowly. Do not try to run the long runs long at this point. Oh, what else we got going on? Burton Hane. Burton Hand just 36 days away. But important date. Next Wednesday, August the 12th, is the last day that you can register and be guaranteed a shirt.

SPEAKER_16

And also, Bob, I think the end of the month is the last day for online registration.

SPEAKER_09

Thanks, John.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Thanks. I I know it is often possible to register on site there.

SPEAKER_16

I don't know, do they sell out or I don't know if they've ever sold out, but there is on-site registration day Friday. So if you want to get into the marathon, you'd have to do it Friday night before I think it's eight o'clock, Greg, right?

SPEAKER_11

I think uh I think so, yeah.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. Or pick up your bib before eight o'clock.

SPEAKER_09

Right. Okay. Anyway, that's coming up. Uh the Donna weekend in Jacksonville, that's a ways off yet, still half a year away. Uh I want to remind friends that we are going to register. If you register for the Donna, register for the Moving for Jeff Galloway team. Not the Rise and Run team, but for the Moving for Jeff Galloway team. And I saw today I got notification that the, and this is for folks local to the Orlando area, the Rise and Run 5K in Kissimmee is coming back this year. It's 72 days away. It is the Saturday before wine and dine. I do hope we can get a lot of people there. And that is not our race, if anybody's mistaken. No, it's not. We don't sponsor it. It's sponsored by the uh who sponsors that? Rotary Club, I think it was of Kassimme. Uh, but they call it Rise and Run. But I we had a bunch of folks there last year. They won us a Spirit Award for having the most spirit. I'm hoping we get even more folks there this year. I see our friend Heather has started a rise and run team, so you can register for Team Rise and Run if you're gonna go over there in Kissimmee. And uh this will either this may scare people away, but I signed up, so I plan to be there.

SPEAKER_11

He's braving I-4, ladies and gentlemen. Get excited.

SPEAKER_16

Yep, I know two weeks in a row, he'll be on I-4.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Gonna leave here at like uh I think the race starts at 8. I think I'll leave here at I don't know, 4:30 or 5. Uh at that time of day, it should be a 90-minute trip on a Saturday. I think it probably will be, unless something outrageous happens, like a traffic accident.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, and I think these they I think they made the news last year that the the Rise and Run Runner.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, the local news in Orlando, they sure did. And they did a great job, too. I was I was kind of glad I wasn't there because I don't think I could have done as well as they did in terms of uh answering questions and handling the mic. They did a they did a terrific job. But I look forward to seeing our friends there. If you're in the if you're in the area, uh try to get there. We'll have a good time. Uh let's take a look,

Training Updates And Summer Reality

SPEAKER_09

guys. Training updates. How's the training going? We're getting into it. What we say, week seven, week six. Still kind of the tip of the iceberg. We're getting there.

SPEAKER_11

Obviously, for my training update, uh you know, we'll we'll touch upon that a little bit later once we get to the race report. But you know, I had 20 miles on the schedule that I was trying to figure out how to uh incorporate that into loopy looper, and I was really successful with it because I I did five loops. But when you when you math the math though, five loops at loopy looper is only um 18 and three quarters. So I got smart and after I crossed the the start finish line, I so we we all set up uh the base camp for the race is at a public track. So what I would do is after I crossed the start-finish line, I would just walk a loop of the track uh you know after uh each lap. So then that way I was able to get my 20, which worked out really well. And and I gotta admit, your day of recording, my legs are fine. And I think that that go goes to a testament of two things is number one, the run-walk-run method is your friend in terms of being able to do these high numbers and then you know, a short time later be able to get right back into your training. And then the other thing is strength training. Getting that done as part of you know, a supplement to your you know, your running is really going to be beneficial to you. And yeah, I mean, this is this is the best I've felt 20 plus miles uh in in quite a while. So yeah, I think it's really a testament to those two things.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's good. That's good. I'm glad to hear it. I did 10 miles Saturday. It's pretty hot here. I mean, uh you all talked about how hot it was at Loopy. It's I'll just it, you know, I go back to if it's hot where you are type stuff. Uh it was pretty warm. Uh, I didn't I felt pretty good. I was talking uh friends of ours, Richard and Krista, friends we've made from running here. Uh, you may know Richard and Krista as the folks who bring the cookies. They come and help us decorate along with uh Richard's son Barrett. But I was talking with Richard, said he got 10 miles, and he says, Well that take you, will it take you about two hours? And I said, No, probably a little longer. And it got me to thinking that it it wasn't that long ago. And I mean, I'm I'm not talking about when I was in my mid-60s, I could come close to a two-hour half. I didn't do one in my mid-sixties, but I did like a 208, something like that. That's not that long ago. And in one way, I went, this kind of sucks. But in the other way, I'm thinking, you know what? I don't care. I just take what I can get. And if if what used to be a two-hour half is now a two and a half or two hour 45-minute half or whatever, I'm just grateful to be able to still go out there and do it and to finish. So my point is don't be racing anybody. Don't even be racing yourself. Just go out and do the times and get your training in and stay consistent.

SPEAKER_16

You had you went through a lot of different stuff in the last yeah, five or six years. You know, what knee replacement, Achilles? Well, it's funny.

SPEAKER_09

Uh yeah. Uh Roxanne was writing to me and she said, How long did it take you to get back to running after your surgery? And I wrote to her, which one? And she says, she comes back with a question mark. I said, I've had three surgeries in the last four and a half years.

SPEAKER_16

So But like you said, you're still doing it. I mean, you know, not as fast or you were a couple years ago, but you're still out there moving, which is the biggest part of it.

SPEAKER_00

I hear from friends all the time of how inspired they are by you um being able to run and do the things that you do. And so um I think that that's a huge accomplishment in itself, inspiring um people of all ages um that are our listeners.

SPEAKER_09

Well, that's very kind, and I appreciate it very much. And I always flip it around sincerely. I'm only doing it because you do it. I'm only I'm only doing it because uh I want to be part of the crowd, and I appreciate the wonderful, the wonderful Rise and Run

Best Life Advice We’ve Heard

SPEAKER_09

family.

SPEAKER_04

Caution runners, change of topic ahead.

SPEAKER_09

All right, friends, it's time now to ask that significant question what would Alicia do.

SPEAKER_00

I've been doing a lot of thinking during my runs, which I mean can be a good thing or a bad thing, but it's been pretty positive. Um, I know I've talked about on the podcast before that I work in long-term care. And so um, with doing what I do for a living and then um having my mom have retired and just thinking about life overall, um, I've been thinking about kind of what life lessons that I've learned. Um, and this last long run, I was thinking, what is the best piece of advice that I've gotten? And I'll share mine in a minute, but I want to know from you guys, what is the best piece of life advice that you've gotten?

SPEAKER_16

One of the best pieces of life advice I've gotten is tomorrow's never given. Like somebody goes, Oh, you're you're doing this, you're doing that, you know, you might not be able to do that. Like, like you might need a knee replacement in 15 years. I go, I could be gone tomorrow. I said, so just do what I enjoy now, and hopefully that's what's gonna happen. I mean, you know, these tomorrow's never given, and do what you gotta do. Like if go out with your friends, you know, it might be the last time you ever see your friends, you know. Things happen. So enjoy yourself. All right, let me see if I can pick it up a little bit. I know. I'm sorry, I'm pulling everybody off, but I've got two.

SPEAKER_09

I I thought about it, Alicia, and I said it's you know, I've been around the sun more times than you guys have, so it's kind of tough uh to think back through all of them. So I'll go with two. One's kind of lighthearted, and that is start the Dagum podcast. And the advice was you can recall back I approached you guys, let's let's do this, and we hemmed and hawed, and we we debated names, we did when we're gonna get started, and I finally said, We're starting, because I had read it somewhere, it wasn't my idea. I had read it somewhere. I said, just get it started, uh figure it out as you go along. And I remember telling you guys, the first episode's gonna stink, but we're doing it anyway. And actually, the first episode wasn't that bad. I've listened to it since then, it wasn't that bad. So start the Daggum podcast, that's one. The other one in my life, uh and it's it's a challenge, but I think I would point to Bob, you need to go to flight school. And I had a buddy, I was I was in the army, uh, I was stationed in Alaska, I was in for my friends in the army, I was in the quartermaster corps. God bless the quartermaster corps, nothing wrong with it, but I wasn't excited by it. And uh I had a company commander who said, You need to go to flight school. And I did. And as far as that's concerned, the rest is history. So that was a pretty good piece of advice. There have probably been some others, but those are the two in the uh in the afternoon I had to think about it. Those are the two that popped up.

SPEAKER_11

My life advice is going to come from everyone's favorite public television, friendlyhooded neighbor, cardigan wearing gentleman, Mr. Fred Rogers.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, okay. I thought you were going Bluey, pig, but Oh, I mean, great.

SPEAKER_11

I I Bluey has taught me lots of great life lessons, though, but but m Mr. Rogers ranks up there. And and I I'm paraphrasing, but you know, the the way that he talks all the time about you know you're special just the way that you are. And I I think that goes back to you know things that I've said on the podcast before, you know, especially when it, you know, when it comes to summer running, been saying for a while now, you know, love yourself both inside and out. If you're hot, run in that sports bra, run with your shirt off type thing. And I I think that it's just you know, and then continuing the embodiment of that life lesson. And obviously, Mr. Rogers taught taught us lots of things, you know, over the course of uh Mr. Rogers' neighborhood. But I mean, I I think when you boil down to it, you know, that that's the core, you know, just being able to the only way that I feel like you can show love to others is you got to be able to show love to yourself first, and that's uh vitally important. And uh it's uh it's a motto that I I sure do live by every single day.

SPEAKER_15

I am someone who stresses a lot and sometimes over the smallest things, and it's not uh it's a mix of stress and anxiety because you know I just want to do the right things in life, you know, and go on the right paths. And um I had a teacher who gave me a little book at my high school graduation party that was to a book essentially how to not be stressed. And then I I think about because Greg kind of inspired me. So yours was inspired by a show, and I was thinking, I don't know what kind of life advice I would be. And then I was like, well, one that book my teacher gave me, one Ted Lasso be a goldfish because they have 10 second memories. Stuff could be hard sometimes, but you know, if you forget it with just forget about it in 10 seconds, because it's not worth you know worrying about. There's too much stuff in the world, life is too short, stop stressing over things that probably no one else is stressing about, you know. And there is also this one video where if you put in terms of stress, or if you put a glass of water in your hand and you hold it out, you feel the weight after a while. The longer you wait, the heavier it's gonna feel, and feeling that heaviness in the chest, and realizing if you just simply let it go, there's nothing to worry about. And I think my my thing in the I guess my life lesson is nothing is as stressful as it is in your head. You know what I mean? And sometimes you just have to let it go like frozen from Elsa. She sings it, just sing along with her because it's gonna make life so much better.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I love that. I the best piece of advice, I mean, obviously, I've gotten a lot of advice over the years. Um, but one time I was really stressed out at work and I was helping a resident, and he looked at me and I don't even remember what happened, but he knew I wanted to laugh at the situation, and he said, the best thing you can do in life is learn to laugh at yourself. And not only do I now laugh at myself and sometimes way too much at such at certain situations, but it reminded me that life really isn't. That's serious. And like we've all kind of said, take those moments to enjoy things, take those moments to do things. Yes, life's gonna be stressful. Yes, there's gonna st be things that come up. Um, but taking the time to enjoy little things um in life. So I hope that this helps give our listeners a little bit of um motivation to just de-stress a little bit um and maybe some new life lessons for you.

SPEAKER_04

Because that is what Alicia would do. Caution runners, the topic is about to change right now.

Disney Halloween Virtuals Details

SPEAKER_09

Hey gang, we talked last week about the Halloween virtuals Disney's got coming up, and we learned a little bit more this week. So, what did we learn?

SPEAKER_11

Well, we learned that Alicia was right, uh, you know, based on the uh the uh the silhouettes of of all the artwork. Uh so it looks like it will be a four-metal series. We got a uh a Haunted Mansion gravedigger. We got the the headless horseman, the uh she has a name in the Haunted Mansion, the the bride. Why why am I why am I blanking on this right now? I'm a I'm a bad Disney adult right now, but I can't find it.

SPEAKER_00

I was gonna say Leota, but Leota's not that's the yeah, Leota's in the the globe, yeah. Right.

SPEAKER_11

Constance, right?

SPEAKER_00

I think so.

SPEAKER_11

I'll google it up now.

SPEAKER_00

I love that that ride, but I can't think of Constance Hatchaway.

SPEAKER_11

There we go. There we go. Perfect.

SPEAKER_16

The black the black widow bride. Yes.

SPEAKER_11

But uh what I I guess like the the new information that we kind of got this week is that I guess there are certain distances that are associated with each metal. So with the uh with the gravedigger, that's considered a three-mile event. The head headless horseman is four miles, and then Constance is six miles. Obviously, when you add all that up, that's 13. Just shy of a half marathon. I guess you could tack on the point one if you uh if you really want to. And then Mickey in his um not so scary outfit, I guess, is the challenge. But the only other new thing that we kind of learned today is similar to the Christmas virtuals, it is an all or nothing type situation. So it's $185 for uh the whole King Caboodle. So it's not like the summer virtual series where you could do an individualized event or the challenge. So uh yeah, if this is something that you're interested in, uh registration opens this upcoming Tuesday at 10 a.m. Eastern.

SPEAKER_16

Yes, and what you do get is the four medals, a Mickey Mouse Jack-O-Lantern wreath light up, Hollywood peaned, Mickey Mouse pumpkin keychain with a packable tote bag, a rock'em headband, weather's original baking chalk, but baking caramels, your digital bib, your digital finish certificate, and you know, your printable media if you want to go out there, make your own mile markers and post them around town. Let's let's run to the mile market so you can put them out and then go back and run them out so you got them again. I wonder how many folks do that. I I think they were doing it during COVID because it was just something to do, but I don't think it's bad.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's kind of I can see a start and finish, but I'm like, yeah, I don't know about you know I didn't ever do the mile markers, but I put on my bib when they very, very first came out with the virtuals. I I actually have pictures um that I put on my bib, one of which I did at Saratoga Springs because we're on trip. Um, and I wore my bib around and and earned my medal. So good for you.

SPEAKER_16

Good for you, yeah. So yeah, so the medals are interesting too. So the gravedigger medal is a light up medal, they're telling they're saying the haunted, the headless horseman pursuit, uh, that's a glow in the dark medal, and supposedly the Eternal Waltz Six Mile, it's uh infinity mirror medal. So that should be a really interesting looking medal.

SPEAKER_11

Yeah, and the other uh new piece of information that I just stumbled upon here is that the uh the celebrated charity is uh one that's pretty well known around these parts. The uh charity money will be going to give kids the world.

SPEAKER_16

So uh so that's uh that that's about 40 40 years, it says, too, right?

SPEAKER_11

Yeah, yeah, the 40th anniversary.

SPEAKER_09

Interesting. Well that sounds like fun. Sounds like you're doing a good job with this virtual. Hope those of you who are interested in it uh get registered and enjoy it.

SPEAKER_04

Caution runners, change of topic ahead.

Shirts Fantasy Football Zoom And Guest

SPEAKER_09

Shipping for the shirts will be about five bucks. And I like to remind our friends that we've got a discount code with Kawaiian Pizza Parel. It's Rise and Run all one word. The discount code does not apply to this shirt. However, if you order another item from KPA, that discount would apply to that other item. And if you order more than $50 worth of merchandise, and two shirts would be two shirts would be more than $50, you can uh use the code FreeShip50 for free shipping on your order. So that's out there. We'll be reminding you about that for a while. That's always fun. Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us and we'll be able to see the costumes everywhere. Last year wasn't too bad. The uh the puppies were kind of rough. The cruelity villa and the puppies, it was really cold. So we were all covered up. But the penguin the penguins love the cold, Bob. There you go, John. You're right about that, man. Wait, do they? Yeah. Penguins are in Antarctica. Isn't there is there a warm weather?

SPEAKER_00

No, there's there are penguins. Aren't there penguins though in like Australia and stuff that are in warmer climates? Could be sometimes.

SPEAKER_09

I'm no penguin expert. But penguins are a cold weather bird. But yeah, it could be.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

John's looking it up right now.

SPEAKER_00

I know he's actually rocks and choose each other as partners. That's what what the penguins do.

SPEAKER_16

I think my wife will get upset with that.

SPEAKER_09

Well, the other fun, the other fun part is when I make statements like that without looking them up, then my friends can get on Facebook and go, no, Bob, this is and I'm I'm happy with that. I'm happy, I'm glad to see people do that. Uh, the other thing I want to remind our friends of is that the fantasy football sign-up sheet is still pinned in the feature section. I still haven't signed up. I will. Uh I nor have I looked to see how many people have signed up, but we'll have a league of some kind. I promise. We had a bunch last year. We had nearly 50. And we'll see how many we get this year. Next Zoom is tonight, 6th of August. Hope to see you there. Instructions for login will be on the Facebook page. Upcoming episode next week. Author and runner Hildi Weiss joins us. Hildi is a woman who started running later in life and chronicles her successes and some of the things she found difficult. So we think I think a lot of our friends will relate to what Hildi has to say. She'll be with us next week. And now please stand clear of the

Race Report Setup And Sponsors

SPEAKER_09

door. It's time for a race report. The race report is sponsored by our friend Tom Stokes. Stoked Metabolic Training. Stokes.fit slash rise and run coaching is the site for more information. Tom's got two wonderful programs available. You've heard us talking about the importance of strength training. Uh Tom's got his accelerate group training and his individual one-on-one coaching. Let's get started on Saturday. And look, the big event this week is the one we want to spend an extended amount of time talking about. If you looked on our Facebook group page at all, you know it was loopy looper weekend up in Pensauck and New Jersey.

Loopy Looper Teams And Why It Works

SPEAKER_09

A bunch, I mean a tremendous number. I was really excited to see how many Rise and Runners were there. We have four of them joining us tonight. Well, let's say five because Greg certainly counts in that number. So five loopy loopers joining us. Greg, of course, is here. We're also joined by Chrissy.

SPEAKER_01

Hi, everyone. I was part of the Dole Whip Dashers. We did 14 loops, and then I was crazy enough to stick around and do the glow loop at night as well.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Yeah. And a loop was 3.75 miles.

SPEAKER_01

7.5 miles. So by the end of the day, I had 22 and a half miles on my feet.

SPEAKER_09

All right. Jack's here with us. Hiya, Jack.

SPEAKER_02

Hi, Bob. Hello, everyone. I was a member of the uh the people movers. Very happy to be a member of that that great team. Um, yeah, we did 17 loops as a team. Each of us did four individual 3.75 mile loops. And then uh like all of us, uh we we went around and did that final loop uh walking together around the river.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, I think that's great. I think that's great. And Ilyana and Steven are here with us, husband and wife team. Both ran. Uh Stephen, kick it off. Tell us what you did.

SPEAKER_03

Uh so I did the uh hundred mileer challenge.

SPEAKER_09

And uh drop the mic. No, don't literally drop it. Okay. No, that was bad. 100 mile solo event.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so I had 30 hours to complete it and uh got it done in 29 and just shy of 30 minutes. So that's outstanding.

SPEAKER_09

I mean 30 30 30 hours for 100 mile. That's no slouch. That's that's impressive. We'll hear more about it in a minute. Uh Iliana, what did you do?

SPEAKER_13

Um, I was part of the Big Dill team, and uh, we did a total of 16 laps together, um, with that last one being as a team. So yeah.

SPEAKER_09

The big dills, as in the tent site was decorated with pickles.

SPEAKER_13

Oh, absolutely. We had the pickle shorts and pickle shirts and all of the things, all pickles.

SPEAKER_09

Pretty cool. Uh look, it sounds wonderful. I enjoyed reading all about it, but I wasn't there. So let's go to the source, and I'm gonna ask Greg, why don't you take over here and walk us through what happened in New Jersey on Saturday?

SPEAKER_11

Sure, yeah. So this is uh my third loopy looper and my fourth loop event because actually I got introduced to this in the winter version of this event, uh called the Frosty Looper, thanks to our our lovely angel Aaron, the the the matriarch of the uh the Will Run 4 podcast. She was she was the bad influence. And I'm so glad that I I feel like I've passed on the tradition of uh of being the uh the bad influence of getting so many people uh to you know, you know, for for some like Jack, you know, just come right down the street, and then you know, others like you know, Ileana and Steven driving a couple of hours, and then we had a ton of friends who flew into this event, which is crazy. So end all be all, we ended up with seven four-person relay teams. Oh, that's remarkable. And and the one thing that I do want to mention right off at the top, um, before we we delve into our personal experiences, is um I just want to talk about the testament of this community. And originally we were supposed to have eight teams, and there was one team that unfortunately had to defer their registration because of uh sickness in the family. And we had found out about this a couple of weeks ago. But what I so appreciated being part of their email correspondence was that you know, these four women never met each other in person before. And you know, so really their only interactions were through email, and they were being so supportive of one another, they made a collective decision as opposed to trying to find someone at the last minute to fill in for the place, they were so dead set on wanting to run together that they made the decision to defer as opposed to make this last minute decision. And I loved hearing that story, and again, it just goes to show to a testament um of this community. So I just wanted to make sure that that did not get lost um during the course of this uh this race report recap. But we're gonna go to the local legend himself first here, Jack. Obviously, you know, we've you it's been a while since we've had you on. You know, we we call you the king of Canton County because you've run every single street that there is in the county. To someone who is not um aware of the Cooper River Loop and Pensack and New Jersey, you know, just describe what we ran over and over and over and over again.

SPEAKER_02

Sure. Um, so it is called Cooper River. It is a river, um, but the portion that we ran, think of it as more of a large lake. Um it's about 3.75 miles around it, all paved, um, but with at at all times the lake. I mean, the instructions were just keep the lake or keep the river to your right and just keep every time you come to an intersection, just to make a right dice at the intersection. But we never actually crossed any roads. Um, so you could really just put your head down and uh try not to sweat too much and just keep keep going and enjoy uh stepping around geet and not leave behind. Um and uh because it was a uh a Saturday or or a Sunday in Steven's case, um there were lots of walkers, there were people having parties down there. Uh it's just sort of a general, like a happy sort of atmosphere down there on a on a very nice summer day.

Course Basics And Hotel Check In Chaos

SPEAKER_11

Well, I I think that the first place that we need to start in terms of of the weekend is is actually let's go to Friday, uh, because I know this actually affected um Ileana and Steven. Uh so when, especially in our Discord channel, there was lots of people that were talking about, you know, where should I stay if I'm traveling in for this? And I kept reiterating to people over and over, stay at the Double Tree. You see, it's you know, um, you know, the the back of the hotel, you know, from the loop itself. Uh, but apparently people had uh issues uh checking in. Uh so uh Stephen and Ileana, um, what was your check-in experience like at the Double Tree?

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, so you know, I think the theme of the weekend was uh it's Greg's fault, right? Because Greg recommended Double Tree for us. No, I'm kidding. It was a mile away. It was the most logical place for us to stay for the weekend, especially coming from out of town. And so I used the Hilton app and I was able to actually check into one of my rooms, but I had gotten two because we also had um Steven's mom and stepdad there with us as well. So I was just gonna be like, okay, I'll just go into the front desk when we arrive to get make sure that we got that second room connected. Well, when we arrived, there was a huge line at the front desk. And I'm like, well, let's just go to the one that I already have the uh key to, and then we'll come back. Well, the reason why there was a huge line was because apparently Hilton worldwide had a shutdown. Like their network went down and they cannot check anyone in. And so I'm texting my group because I knew all three of my ladies were staying at the double tree as well. And they were like, Oh, well, I have not checked in yet. And so then, of course, with the lobby just kept getting fuller and fuller, and we said, Well, let's just go do our bib pickup. We at least have one room. I met up with two of the ladies, Melissa and Wendy. They arrived, put their luggage in my room. We went and um did our bib pickup and did the thing, came back, it was still down. We went to Walmart, got our like the little things that we needed, came back, and then finally it looked like people were standing in line again. And so at that point, like I don't know what they figured out, but they were slowly like almost manually checking people in. And so, and this was almost like seven o'clock or so. And so at that point, we're like, I we just need to get ready for bed, honestly, though. So let's just like figure it out. And we I did finally get the second room and Wendy, and then they all got their room, so it was okay, but yeah, it was not four o'clock check-in like they promised.

SPEAKER_11

Well, again, I I'm so sorry that that happened to you and and so many other people. And I I guess it, you know, it's a fluke thing, but I just I know it was it was part of the weekend, and lots of people were talking about it in their game plan. So I figured it was it was important to share that. But um let's get to race morning itself.

Tent Decorating And Team Traditions

SPEAKER_11

Chrissy, you know, one of the new things that was part of this edition of Loopy Looper was that there was a uh a tent decorating contest, and I know the um the the Dole Whippers were uh were were part of that venture. So so talk about um, I guess one, the inspiration behind the team name and then how that translated then to all the decorations that you had.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it's interesting that you talk about the technology challenges with the hotel because all I could think about through this whole process was thank God for all the technology we have, right? So ChatGPT gave us ideas for our team name because we were like, again, none of us knew each other. It's just four people. Well, we had a married couple, so I think they know each other a little bit, but for the most part, you know, it's all these somewhat strangers coming together, we're throwing out different things we're into, what we like. Chat GTP is helping us help make like an image, and then somebody's like, oh, let's get shirts made. And so we all, you know, we're like, we like Dole Whip, it's hot, it's summer. Like maybe we can even make Dole Whip while we're there. And so, you know, the shirts were designed and we had this whole thing planned. And then what did we get? Like, maybe a week's notice that there was a tent contest. So, again, thank you. We got Amazon Prime, and then there's like a skeleton, like for an endless endurance is their like theme. So one of our teammates was like, Oh, I have a skeleton, and another one's like, I have a pineapple costume, and like let's dress up a skeleton. And I'm like, I have a skeleton dog. And so we're like going around our house getting all these different things. And um, yeah, so we and again, technology, Greg gave us these spreadsheets, and we're like, who's bringing what? And we're texting each other and got it all set up. Unfortunately, our power bank couldn't power my crazy Pamper Chef blender, so we never could fully make the Dole Whip like we had hoped, but I did put the stuff in and shook it up real good. And we had somewhat dole whip like smoothies that we were able to give out to people. So that was still fun.

SPEAKER_11

And it was quite delicious, even if it wasn't at ultimate blending mode. It was it was very appreciated.

SPEAKER_15

Now, speaking of decorations, what about the big dill decorations? You already talked about outfits that you guys did. How was the decorations over there?

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, so this was all Chrissy and her daughter. They um when we came up with the pickle idea, um, she already said, Oh, I got this idea. And it being in New Jersey, um, her mind went to like casino, um, all of that stuff. So she had all of these things, like a little roulette table, all the poker chips, uh, tables and decorations. And then she made these awesome posters that said big deal with um uh like a little logo that we had made for a running pickle and stuff. So uh she rock star, she got everything um and uh uh brought the tables and stuff. And so I bought the chairs and um had uh made a banner. Um and it was just collectively. And then of course, as soon as we got there, Wendy and Melissa just jumped in and they like started decorating everything because I'll be honest one, I'm short, so I can't reach anything. And two, like I don't have an eye for decorating, but those three ladies just rocked it. Like Steve and I were setting up all of our like Station things that we need for the tent. We're more practical. So we did the practical things and they did all the decorating. And let me tell you, like it was just so much fun, and it was just super bright and just awesome.

SPEAKER_03

They brought fitted uh tablecloths. Oh wow. Yeah, I mean it was bougie. Hey, they were they were ready.

SPEAKER_14

Did you guys serve like I was gonna say either pickles or pickle juice? Serve in pickle juice?

SPEAKER_03

We had both, so I've actually been making a lot of pickles, and uh it was actually pickle festival at our local farmers market. So I had pickles ready to go and uh brought them in.

SPEAKER_09

Guys, uh Christy, uh not Christy, Melissa and Wendy came from pretty far off, didn't they? Came pretty good distance.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, they flew in Friday morning. Um, and so they just um did that, like did a little bit of the Philly tour, and then we did a big pickup, and then they were ready to run the next day, and then they flew out the next day too. So they were just like in and out, and it was crazy.

SPEAKER_09

Don't they both live in Western Canada?

SPEAKER_13

Uh Wendy is in California.

SPEAKER_09

California and Melissa's in Canada, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_11

All right. Last thing I I need to ask about, or or I want you to talk about in terms of uh your decorations is Ileana, please tell us about the pickle affirmations.

SPEAKER_13

Okay, so that was another thing that Chrissy brought. It was just hilarious. And um literally, um, she had two of them, but one was a jar of these little pickles that if you open it, it's like a little note card and it had little pickle affirmations on like you're doing great. And then she had another one that was like a deck of cards, but this was like the bad A affirmations. And so a little bit more colorful language, but man, they were awesome. And it was just everybody who passed through our table, we were just handing them out and they just loved it, and it was good. Um, we flipped them over every time we finished individually a loop, we would uh look at it and just get a little bit of a boost of encouragement from those uh those cards.

SPEAKER_01

Speaking of affirmations, did all of you notice that someone hand wrote messages on every single bib?

SPEAKER_13

Yes, it was awesome.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, after I took my bib off, it said, have fun. I was already done.

SPEAKER_01

I was like I never I never even noticed it. Some I'm I'm glad someone said something because I didn't notice they had, you know, because I I picked everybody's up and I'm just like grabbing t-shirts and bibs. And later I was like, oh my gosh, that's so wonderful that somebody wrote all these messages.

SPEAKER_09

I heard about that from previous looper races that they've done.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's that's an an endless endurance, an endless endurance thing. That they yeah, they they've always, as long as I've been running with them, they they take the time to do that. It's really just a nice touch.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's cool. All right. Well, let's move to the start of the race.

Heat Hydration Salt And Smart Pacing

SPEAKER_00

Um Jack, why don't you tell us about how the weather was?

SPEAKER_02

The weather, yeah. Uh one of the things that that endless endurance used to put in their uh the race guides is this is an August weather or an August race in New Jersey, and anything we tell you about the weather will be a lie. This race has seen uh real fields and hundreds of teens of storms that have blown in and literally blown our tents away. Uh that was two years ago. It's also seen, for what I understand, quite beautiful weather, which was last year. Uh the uh the year that I took naturally uh this year the the day started out not terribly uh hot. And when I say not terribly hot, I think it was only 80 at that point. Um and but still pretty humid. Uh the humidity lasted for a little while, um, but as as the humidity dropped slowly during the course of the day, the temperature rose slowly during the course of the day. Um so it was it was definitely uh it was it was cooking out there. Um and and it was it was definitely a day to make sure that you you hydrated well, that you fueled well, and really just listen to your body if you're going to be going out on on that four-mile loop. Um they did have an aid station halfway through and a larger aid station at the um at the um staging area where we all set up. Um but it was really a day to to really just be cautious and uh you know put out put out the effort you felt comfortable with.

SPEAKER_11

No, Jack, you you're spot on with it. I can remember like watching the the local forecast the night before, and they're like, okay, as the day goes on, the clouds are gonna build. And I'm like, that better be right. And for once, the Philadelphia forecast was actually correct. You know, as the afternoon did go on, we got a lot more cloud cover. But at the same time, though, I I was the first one to go out for my team, and I was part of team uh in honor of Coach Twiggs uh Better Than We Deserve. And I remember coming off that first loop and saying to my teammates, it's not even nine o'clock yet, and I need salt. And I remember getting right back to our tent, and I had bought um I made an Aldi run uh the day before, and they had a bag, and not knowing about Ileana's team, um, it was fried pickle ranch potato chips. Ooh, and I was like, ooh, this sounds good.

SPEAKER_09

It actually does.

SPEAKER_11

And so I was I immediately opened that bag and I just started chowing down. I was like, oh, these were really good. So then I started telling everyone else about because this is the one thing I love about Loopy is that yes, Endless Endurance does an absolutely fantastic job of providing you know liquid and solid aid throughout the course of the entire race. And obviously, I think the menu gets more expansive as the day goes on, which is why I want to get Steven's perspective on it uh a little bit later. But everyone just started heading straight towards my potato chips, and but again, another like idea of the community aspect is like sure, each team had their table and had their sustenance, but everyone was sharing all of that, which was great. And by the end of the day, my my bag of fried pickle ranch potato chips were gone. In terms of the weather, though, yeah, I can remember needing salt after that first loop. Jack, I remember you coming in from your second loop, and you were just a sweaty mess. And I remember all of us had like the exact same like visceral, like, oh, that sucked. Like, you know, coming in off a loop two. But as that humidity did go down and the cloud cover increased, I think the general consensus was that loops three and four, we were actually faster in those loops because we had the cloud cover and it wasn't as much uh direct sunlight. So it was not the weather that we had last year, uh, when again when Aaron called in all those favors for us, but I think we all managed pretty well uh this go-around.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was kind of a gallows humor thing in our team. Um, every time we came in, we asked, Is it still hot out? Yeah, it's still hot out. Um and with the chips, Jack didn't look very impressed by the uh the idea of these potato chips.

SPEAKER_11

Well, again, we we we don't we don't get her opinions on food because you know last year was the great peanut butter and jelly sandwich debate with her, you know.

SPEAKER_00

So she also doesn't like pickles, so we can't even talk to her.

SPEAKER_15

I'm honestly gonna I'm gonna be completely honest. Pickles just sound way worse than than peanut butter and jelly, and that's that's wool. So I love the I love the big dill as as a name. I think it's fantastic. I will get it some like dill pickle like shirt. I just I can't eat them. I I take them off my burgers.

SPEAKER_09

I Jack, we still love you, but you're just wrong.

SPEAKER_11

But but speaking of pickles and aid though, uh one of the great things is that the race provides is uh so obviously you know they have water, tubs of ice, but then they do offer tailwind and then but pickle juice, they had a whole big iglue cooler at the aid station. So if you needed a hit of pickle juice, you could go right there and and grab it, which which was nice. So Chrissy, look talk talk about your first couple loops. What what was the experience like for you and your teammates?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, I I think we did well. We all were just there to have a good time and treat this as training runs. So none of us were trying to push too hard. We were listening to our bodies. We all felt like you know, we had garments and our heart rates and everything was well going well. And actually, when we went back to the tents, there was a nice breeze like moving through. I never really felt the breeze when I was running the loop, but when we were at the tent, I did feel like I could cool down and it wasn't too bad. Then, like you said, towards the middle, you know, all of our times definitely slowed, and we came back and we were, you know, looking pretty pretty sweaty. But our team actually brought a changing booth. So we were all changing clothes multiple times as well throughout the loops. And by that last loop, I think you know, we're just with all the rise and runners and talking and walking and having a good time. I totally forgot it was like 90 some degrees, like it was just so much fun to walk and talk with everybody. And um, it's hard to believe we were like walking in that heat for hours and hours. Yeah, so it was nice. Uh and then I like I said, I went back for the glow loop. Humidity was still there, but it was it was still, you know, uh much nicer at night. I wish they would do the 12-hour relay from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. That would be ideal.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, that'd be funny. That'd be interesting.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_15

Were they doing the row races this year? The rowing during their loopy looper? Because I know last year they were doing a rowing competition when we were there.

SPEAKER_01

You know, here's I I didn't notice that, but I'll say I also ran two loops before I realized where the Wawa was. I came back after a second video. Where's the Wawa? I have not seen the Wawa because I live in Sheets Country and really love Wawa. So I was like, I want to know where the Wawa is. So if there was a rowing competition, I probably missed it.

SPEAKER_11

Chrissy, don't worry, you weren't the only one because uh the you know, the the joke that that we had going with uh with my team is that you know we we started a text thread with the four of us, and what I did is when I hit the Wawa, which is just before mile three, I would just text Wawa as the indication for the next person to be able to get ready. And then all of a sudden, so I was first, uh Beth went out second, but then we weren't hearing from her for quite a while, and then all of a sudden we got a text message. I didn't see the Wawa, I'll be there in five minutes. So then her wife was trying, uh Die was trying to like hustle to get ready so that she could be at the start-finish line to uh the pass off the the tracking bib. So don't worry, you weren't the only one.

SPEAKER_16

Greg with the Wawa, did you bring everybody back one of those delicious doll whips that you make?

SPEAKER_11

Okay, so we were all talking about throughout the course of the entire day. I know Ileana wanted to grab one. I know Brandy, who was um you know our one of our team captains for the uh the screaming chicken team, which uh we can you know mention uh as we get towards the end here. We were just having way too much fun chatting with one another, that we just didn't have an opportunity to go. So uh at one of these races, or I I know that there's gonna be a lot of crossover between loopy looper and bird in hand, you know, maybe between you know those events or something like that, we can make the Dole Whip Soda experience uh happen. But Ileana, I'm very sorry where that we didn't get a chance to uh to partake in that uh this go-around.

SPEAKER_13

Oh, don't worry. I did afterwards. Okay, well, there you go.

SPEAKER_00

So, Greg, you had just mentioned it. So there was something that you guys had to hand off each lap, right? Uh a timing chip. Was there more to that, or was it kind of difficult? I was watching one of the videos somebody posted and it looked like um it's attached to your bib. So is it kind of difficult to get off of the bib onto somebody else?

SPEAKER_11

No, so for the for the second year in a row, what they did is so we all had individual bibs, but in theory, that didn't really matter because there was no timing chips on those. The team themselves each had a bib that was attached to an elastic um clip-on waistband. So that's what had to get passed off from time to time, which was a heck of a lot easier. Then I remember two two years ago when we tried to attempt the 24-hour version of this thing. It was like an ankle bracelet, and I remember and and the heat was even worse. And I remember each one of us was just like exerting all the energy that we had left to like be able to bend down and like take this thing off. So endless endurance. If you're listening, please stick with the elastic waistband. We love it.

Steven’s First Ultra Becomes 100 Miles

SPEAKER_16

Okay, Steven. So you were the one that didn't want to really do much this weekend. So you started the hundred miler. So can you talk about that?

SPEAKER_03

Win in for the 100 mile challenge. It's 27 loops on that uh 3.7 mile uh loop course. Um, yeah, I mean, it's it's a lot to to do. It's uh it was my first ultra, so um it was just um you take for after Jack, don't you?

SPEAKER_15

Well, I didn't do what he did. I was this is a huge difference. That's amazing.

SPEAKER_03

But I mean, it's it's her hanging out with my wife, is why I ended up signing up to this. So I mean she is kind of default, but um, yeah, so really what it is is is Ileana signed up to do the the 12-hour relay, and I'd always wanted to do a hundred-mile race um because I'm slightly crazy. But you know, most of them are through the middle of the woods and have crazy elevation, and you know, you gotta backpack all that stuff with you, and it just didn't appeal to me. Um so that 27 loops where I don't have to carry anything just seemed like the right idea. That's true, yeah. But uh yeah, and it and it made it easier for training at home as well. So um, but it was it was actually um enjoyable in a way that I didn't have to think about uh what was going on on the course. Uh, like like Jack mentioned earlier, you just kind of keep the the lake or the river to your right and you know kind of keep your head down, make sure you don't tripping on anything, and uh just kind of enjoy the the scenery and what's happening around um as the day progressed. Yeah, there was uh lots of parties and things going on. There was a ton of uh runners and walkers that were going around the loop in the opposite way that were encouraging you as you were going, um, as well as all the people that were racing. Um so it was it was very nice in that aspect as I wasn't alone for most of the race. There was there was almost always somebody around um giving you that that light of encouragement, no matter how hard it was.

SPEAKER_15

So, out of curiosity, what was the longest distance you ran before running a 100 miler? I feel like I know this answer, but I'm afraid to just a half marathon. Oh my gosh. You see, this is what I didn't do something like this. This is this is wild. This is amazing. You see, what a deal.

SPEAKER_03

What had happened was um I ended up uh hanging out and meeting uh Jack and Greg and uh some of you know these rising runners uh at was marathon yeah marathon weekend this this year. Uh I had no aspirations of doing any running this year, to be 100% honest. And um yeah, after going and and hanging out with all of them and cheering them on through the marathon, uh, like I said, you know, Ileana signed up to do the 12-hour relay, and I just kind of decided I was gonna do it. So yeah, I had 20 weeks to prepare for this crazy journey.

SPEAKER_00

So you said it was 27 laps, right?

SPEAKER_03

27 laps, yeah. So the first five uh were were pretty good for me. Like it wasn't a bad start. Um, like they said, the the heat wasn't too bad. Um I I started off with kind of the the Galloway method of doing uh 60 minutes run walk or 60 minutes. 60 seconds crashing it. That's all right. Uh well it turned into a lot of 60-minute walks. Um 60-second run walks uh for the first five loops. Um and then really once I hit that 20, 25 mile mark, I kind of started to have a little bit of knee trouble. And uh at that point I just knew I was gonna have to walk most of it and really ended up walking the next 24 hours. Uh so it was a lot of mental math of making sure that I was doing the right pace and and encouragement from everyone, but uh you know, I'd I'd put in too much work to not not not go as far as I could, but ultimately my goal was don't hurt myself. Um, but yeah, see how far I could go.

SPEAKER_16

How long were your break breaks at the aid stations or the aid tents?

SPEAKER_03

Normally about five minutes or less, yeah, because I I was I was running or walking about a um took me about an hour to do the loop, give or take, a c a couple minutes. So I had about a five to ten minute window on each uh loop to like kind of come in, refuel, uh biofreeze my legs a lot, and then uh kind of just keep going because otherwise I knew that I, you know, if if I started going over an hour on the loop, then you know 27 loops in 30 hours, you know, doesn't give you much wiggle room. So that's amazing. Congratulations.

SPEAKER_15

That truly is amazing. And to say you actually did a really well um thought out plan for the aid stations, too, because what can happen to runners when they're doing an ultra marathon is they can stay too long at the aid station and they lose time without realizing they're losing time because they think they're going through it faster, and it's like, oh crap, I just spent 10-15 minutes here. Oh my goodness. The fact that you spent five minutes or basically less is amazing because you save so much time and having a plan like that is always fantastic, especially for someone who's running an ultra marathon regardless of the distance for the first time. And the fact that you did with 100 miles means you already had a good plan coming in. That sucks that what happens to your knee, but I'm glad that you were okay with walking more so that you can save yourself for the end game. Because I feel like in that case, if someone had hurt themselves, they would have been like, I don't know if I I think this might be a good stop, you know. And the fact that you knew your body and you're like, you know, I think I can still do this and still continue on with the way it is and doing it successfully. How is your body like feeling now that it's been a week almost? Well, not even a week, it's been a few days. Two days. Sorry.

SPEAKER_03

Uh well, um, we did a little uh walking tour around Philadelphia when we left. Uh so I hobbled around the first day. Uh yesterday would have been the second day, which we spent 12-ish hours in the car. And then today, yeah, back at work. But uh honestly, not too bad. I'm I'm really just having a little bit of time, a hard time like um getting my knee bent like all the way down. So I can't quite squat down all the way. Uh, but other than that, like I'm I'm ultimately doing pretty well. Um, I think I think because I knew when I started hurting to not push it too much and then to just go into the walk. Um, that's really what what saved me. Um I've I've done a run or two where I pushed it a little bit too much, and you know, those last five or six miles, uh like really hobbled out of that on like a half marathon once, and it was not an enjoyable experience at all.

SPEAKER_09

Color me impressed with everybody, of course, but a hundred-mile event, that is exceptional. Now, open question here. I assume, and you've already talked about it, that you brought some of your own food to your tent sites. But was there also food provided by the race directors by the by the on the course?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so they they had a really good aid station um right at the start finish line area. Um and throughout the day they were they were adding and taking in uh you know, new items. So you know, it started off with uh they had quesadillas and then you know, they had vegan options, gluten free options for those types of runners as well. So They had a a good variety for everyone. Um but they always had uh you know a a good amount of fruit, watermelon, um, they had pickle juice shots, pickle popsicles, they had popsicles. Um at one point I know they brought in pizza. Um I mean they they really had a ton of good stuff, fruit by the foot at one point, uh, chips. So they they really had a good variety. But I also knew that we were gonna be in the middle of of New Jersey. Um so I assumed that there was gonna be yeah, wah wa close or food trucks or something. So I'd planned that if if the opportunity was right, I was gonna try to do something. Um so there was uh there was a nice little taco truck on the way. Oh, cool. So I had to stop and get a berea taco at one point. Nice. And um shout out to um the the water ice ferry that uh water ice out, yeah, however you guess it. Um whoever brought me that Rita's mango water ice was a godsend. No, no, no. About halfway through the race, found that in my cooler, and uh yeah, that was the best.

SPEAKER_09

Anyone else have food favorites? Anyone grab a cheesesteak?

SPEAKER_14

There's a cheesesteak?

SPEAKER_11

No, there were not I had they had hot dogs at lunchtime, um, and and soft and uh South Philly soft pretzels, which was nice. That'd be good. Yeah. But I had all of it. It was all good.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, heck yeah, I would think so. I think some of us uh had cheesesteaks and hoagies at the end, but uh from Markov.

SPEAKER_09

It's smart. Yeah, yeah, not in the middle. I don't I don't even think I would try that.

The Glow Loop Night Party

SPEAKER_11

All right, so there's actually one more event that uh is part of the weekend, and uh both Chrissy and uh and Ileana participated in this, and that was uh I can't remember if it's at 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. 10 p.m. 10 p.m. is uh a glow loop. And uh Ileana, I know you did that with uh both your children, Carter and Riley. So uh tell us uh tell us about that experience and then uh Chrissy, give your perspective.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, so it's actually um Carter and Riley, and also my mother-in-law, so Steven's mom, and his uh stepdad as well, Lee. And um so Trish has uh uh told me that she wanted to get back, uh get more walking in and maybe run. And so we've actually been training all summer, and I helped her trying to get some of that. And we try a little bit of running and stuff, but right now, um, with her back, it was the best decision just to walk it. And she built herself from zero to three miles, and I was so proud of her. And we knew that the heat was gonna be the biggest issue, but I'm like, well, it's gonna be at 10 p.m. at night, so hopefully that's like it's gonna be humid, but it's not gonna be hot. So there was that. Um, and also um my kids like they they watch us run all the time. They uh I I forced them through lots of like little kid races and things. They did the uh little piglet race and the flying pig and things like that. And I figured, you know, if I buy enough glow sticks, I might be able to convince them to do this loop. And um Heather was also there, so in her wheelchair, so that she was trying to do her last lap um because she had this really awesome sign on her back because it said mindset is everything. And so she had it hanging on her um uh wheelchair and she took off because she was way faster than us. And so we uh we took an hour and 15 minutes to walk the whole thing, but we did it. Um I took videos and it was fun. Um, but what you don't see is the the my kids were losing their minds. They're like, how much longer is this? It was also dark, but I kept saying, like, you know, every time somebody passes us, I want you to encourage them, say, You got this, great job. And a lot of the uh runners were very thankful, like the the 24-hour people. They were like, Oh, thank you, buddy, things like that. And then um, at one point I gave my daughter my phone with music blasting, and of course, all the Disney songs she I don't know, it like woke her up and she just took off, and we're like actually trying to slow her down a little bit. Um, and then uh uh we you know played the game that Brent, I think Brittany Charbonne was the one who said, like, uh pick something, like a color or something to keep your mind on. And that's how I got my son through that because at one point he was just like, I'm done. And I'm like, I just ran for 12 hours, I'm not carrying you. So so we pushed them and um to finish it off, it was really crazy the timing. But as soon as we got back on the track, the lights went out. Um, I think it was like so close to the midnight that the stadium lights like shut off. I don't know if it was on a timer or something, but it literally went dark. But it was really cool because everyone had their glow sticks. So it was actually it wasn't like pitch black, but it was very glowy. Um, and the one of the race uh workers saw us and said, Oh, you guys are part of the glow run. So they all got their medals and the kids were like, We get medals, and they got super excited, and then they ran to the finish line and Trish finished hers. So I mean, 3.75 is the longest day the kids ever ran, the longest that the uh Trish has ever done. It's her first race, and I was super proud of her and Lee as well. And um, yeah, so they they did it.

SPEAKER_01

So I wore all black and then I had my glow vest and I had a uh tutu that lights up, and um it just was like an event where you don't get to do that very often where everybody's like glowing and like again, everybody that is helping to set this up with endless endurance, like they had glow stuff. They were like, Oh, like I remember this one lady lined up, she's like, I don't, I didn't think to bring anything like glowy, and they're like, Oh, we have all this stuff, and then somebody had like a skeleton glow outfit on. So, in a way, it almost like felt like you were at Disney, right? Where like everybody's got these cool things, and then they're sharing stuff, and everybody's just like talking to each other, and you're strangers, and so it was really a a fun time. And I think like the other thing that was cool for me is as a female, I don't too often feel safe running in the dark, I don't even feel safe like running alone. So, this was an opportunity to run in a different place, and you felt safe and you were around, you know, people and it, you know, was uh uh you had already run the loop enough times you knew where the tree stumps were and to be careful and stuff like that. So that was uh it was a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_15

So this first question is gonna be towards you, Steven, first, and then I'm gonna go ahead and ask a question for everybody. Um so my first question for you is what were your thoughts when you crossed the finish line? And then would you do another 100 miler?

SPEAKER_03

I think uh my my thought when I crossed the finish line was thank god this is over. Um because I mean it's it's just so much time um yeah, out there, but like you spend so much time training and everything, and um I was I was ecstatic to have made it to that point though, because you know, you you uh envision essentially that moment uh when you're training. So um it was exactly what I wanted though, because as I was coming close to the finish line, um, you know, my kids were there, so they got to run across it with me. Um ultimately it was very satisfying because um it was nice to see like like we said, my mom got to do her first race, my kids did their longest race. Um, Ileana ended up pacing me at multiple times through the night. So she ended up totaling close to 40 miles total on the day. Wow. Um, I mean, we we we it was a family affair of everyone just going into you know a place of unknown that we've all never really done. So um it's just a really big sense of accomplishment. So at that point, I was kind of through the suck, but still in the suck, right? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um I still I think kind of now as I've been like, you know, talking to the people that you know have been encouraging through the last couple months, uh like that's where like I've really started to to perk up. And it's it's been great like seeing all those people and and getting to thank them um for helping me. You know, I I stopped in the run shop this morning and you know, just told the guy that sold me the shoes on Friday that, you know, thanks, you know, um, because ultimately that that helped get me through the race. But uh to answer your second question of would I do it again? I don't know at this very moment.

SPEAKER_09

That's a fair answer.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's because it is, it's just such a big commitment, right? And um now that I've at least accomplished it, I can say that I did it. Um but I I do think something like 50 miles or 50k or something smaller is definitely more obtainable and more sustainable, um, at least at this point in my life.

SPEAKER_11

But well, Steve, I I think you need to come back because uh I'm looking at the the official results here, and um this person was registered just for the 24-hour event, and they logged uh 34 loops. So that's 127 miles. So I think you have a new goal to go after.

SPEAKER_09

That's remarkable. We'll see. No, that's for that's otherworldly.

SPEAKER_03

But I mean, if you want to go there, I I think the the 24-hour team did uh like 160 miles. They absolutely crushed it. And team when they when they passed me, I knew it every time. They were crushing.

SPEAKER_15

Now, for the rest of the group, I mean this weekend is an absolute

Would We Do It Again

SPEAKER_15

blast. I got to do it last year. I'm kind of really sad I didn't get to do it this year. You guys look like you had an absolute fun. I mean, you guys had decorating contests, you had costumes, you have a glow night like lap. Like, that's pretty epic. Do you think that you guys will come back and do it again? Because this is this is an event where it's like you're just hanging out with friends and it's just a blast.

SPEAKER_01

So when I finished, I was like, oh, that was different. And I don't know if I'd do it again, but I also said I'd only do Dopey once, and I'm doing my second dopey. And here we are three days later, and I'm already thinking, like, I saw on the Ryzen Run Facebook page, somebody's already plotting out like the house of wine. I'm just like, oh wait, I want to be in the puppy tent. Like so, and what and the other thing, like again, this is just such a great community. Like, so many people were like, Oh, I'll see a bird in hand. I'll and then I found out some people were going to, you know, the wine glass marathon. And so I have a feeling I'm probably gonna do it.

SPEAKER_02

You are I tried the um the solo 24-hour event a few years ago, which for me wound up being a 22-hour event. And um been doing the relay um with with everybody from Rise and Run. I mean, that's that's the way to go. That's the way to go. Everybody, everybody is the race. But absolutely, I would I would 100% do it, do it again, but uh, but only the the relay with you guys. Good, good.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah. So like Christy said, I it was a very different race. Um, I don't know how to train for it, I guess, when I went into it because like timing of food and nutrition and all that stuff, it was really hard because you just don't know how fast everyone's gonna go and when you should eat or when you should eat. Um, so the logistics of run, like if you're going there to do your best performance of a run, it's probably not your ideal thing. But that wasn't the whole point, right? The whole point was to be with our family, and I hadn't had a chance to hang out with the Rise and Run, other than like the uh Marathon weekend meetup. And even then, I was only able to like talk to a few people, and so this was like all of us came together and we were chit-chatting, we were sharing things. Um, um, Melissa and Wendy and uh Chrissy had brought um Allen bracelets, so they were passing those out. Um, I had made bandanas, um, ice bandanas, and so like I was passing those out. People were giving out food and drinks, and we were just chit-chatting, it was and encouraging each other. And that right there was like I it was honestly kind of sad when it was my turn to go around and comes like, oh man, I'm missing the party. So I kind of do your lap really fast so that you can come back and like be part of the family again. And it was just like, um, and and at the same time, too, like while I was doing my relay, I was also crewing him. And so, like, when he was doing his five-minute in-betweens, like, I was just trying to be like, Okay, fill your water, there's your stuff, and go. And so a lot of it was just also my mind was taken up with that. But like Melissa helped Steven when I was on my run, when he came through. And so, like, everybody just came together, and I was just so thankful to for everyone keeping him alive while I was gone. Um, but at the same time, it was fun, and like the course really was easy and it was very enjoyable. Like, people were I I watched a softball game at one point, and there was people rowing. I don't think it was an actual race, but it was like training or something like that. Um, so yeah, it was just it was and it was pretty, especially at night, like when um the sun went down uh and we did our last loop together, like that sunset was really cool. And then on the opposite end, when I ended up um pacing him at 5 a.m. uh for one of the laps, and so then the sun was coming up, so then I got to see that. That was really cool too. So um, would I do it again? As Jack said, I will do the relay, but I don't like I don't know if I would want to do it individually because then I would feel like I would be missing the party. Like I would really just want to be there just to hang out with people, maybe do the 24-hour relay just to extend the party a little bit longer because it was sad uh when we were all getting ready for that final loop. Um, I or I went out on a final run before we did the final loop. And right before that, uh, we were just like, oh, it feels like a really long day, but it the end's already here, and it's really sad. It was like kind of melancholy that we would be finishing this up, and it was sad, like we are we were already missing each other before we even finish. So yeah, you find another crew person, Steven, because I need to I need to put you out more next time.

SPEAKER_03

Uh as far as me doing it again, uh solid maybe. Maybe, maybe not the hundred miler, but yeah, maybe one of the relays would be would be cool, but just the whole community. It was such a good time. Um, not just the rise and run people, but it everyone that was running was super encouraging, even if they weren't in the race. I mean, there was a ton of passer buyers that that were you know encouraging us and doing solid loops, like five and six loops, just regular people. It was wild. Um, but the the whole atmosphere like down in uh yeah, the tent city was it was so cool, and then yeah, just everyone's vibes, like it was it was a great time.

SPEAKER_09

So it would definitely be uh be an enjoyable experience to come back. Nice, nice. It's been it's fun listening to this. That really is. I you've done all of you have done a wonderful job.

Shoutouts And More Loopy Highlights

SPEAKER_09

Greg, I'm gonna let you have last word and wrap this up, but before I do that, I want to go. You know, I took this as though it was a normal race report, and I went down and I looked at everybody's report. So let me go through the names that I have here who aren't here, and maybe some of you have comments, and I'll start uh 12-hour solo event. Brianna did that. Brianna's goal is she wanted to run her age in miles, which she did, and she did it with an hour to spare. Uh let's see. You we mentioned it Heather was there. Heather was the only wheeled athlete on the course. She wanted to go for a belt buckle, 100 miles. She started strong. I think the heat got the best of her, but Heather finished her first 100K, so that's a PR.

SPEAKER_07

Wow.

SPEAKER_09

Uh Yvette, I have listed. Yvette did the relay last year. She wanted 30 miles this year as a 12-hour solo runner. And despite the heat, and she got some blisters on her feet, but she still got her 30 mile goal. Her longest run ever. Of course, that's a PR. But she makes a comment that I just heard from several of you. Running solo was great, but I feel like I missed out on the party. I've got some other names, and I'm not sure if we mentioned these or not on the 12-hour relay. Holly. Holly did the 12-hour relay. Finished just shy of 22 miles, close to her goal. She's getting ready for Berlin. Uh, she said she had a lot of fun hanging out with the Rise and Run community all day, and then occasionally taking a running break. Uh Lizzie, Lizzie was there. Yep, her and Holly were on the same team. Yep. Yep, okay. Ridiculous heat. Uh, company made it all worthwhile. Uh, Robert was there. Uh Sarah, Sarah logged 15 miles on the day as part of the relays team. Let's see. We talked about uh your big deal team. Uh that was, and you may have mentioned this. It was Wendy's first relay race for the big deal. So that's pretty cool. Uh Brandy and Jennifer. I'm not sure what team they were on. Were they Team Chicken or the Screaming Chickens?

SPEAKER_11

Let's let's let's get let's get that correct, yes.

SPEAKER_09

Did they and I'm sure there were others on that team.

SPEAKER_11

Uh Screaming Chickens, yeah. It was Jennifer. Uh it was Jennifer, Brandy, Megan, and uh Christina. Okay.

SPEAKER_09

Uh let's see here. Jennifer got 15 miles in. Uh Brandy got 23, and Brandy and Jennifer uh finished some of the loops in the inflatable chicken suit.

SPEAKER_11

Yes, uh, unfortunately, I think we have to say rest in peace to Brandy's chicken suit because uh as she crossed the uh start-finish line, she was um holding said chicken suit in her hands. So uh something happened on the loop.

SPEAKER_09

I gotta I gotta imagine that was hot as blazes. Yes, it was a chicken stole at one point. Yeah, yeah, okay. Uh Chris, you talked about the Dole Wish Dashers, Dole Whip Dashers, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_09

With uh with with Michael and Terry?

SPEAKER_01

Michael and Terry were there that I think was their longest distance they've run so far. They're training for their first Doby in January, and Liz with with us as well.

SPEAKER_09

Uh Divya was there. Divya did uh 56 and a quarter miles as a 24-hour soloist. Felt pretty good. Uh see she finished at 22 hours because she wants to save her legs. She's going to Berlin, so she didn't want to press anything there. Uh Divya's parents showed up at 3 a.m. to help her counterpack, uh help her pack her campsite up. I think that's pretty cool.

SPEAKER_13

Because when everybody left, um I I was still there um crewing Steven. And so Divya, no knowing that she was doing 24 hours, I told her, hey, you know what, just like use my tent, tell me what you need, I will uh gladly help you. And so as a few times, like she needed uh band-aids or uh because she was getting blisters and she needed biofreeze and stuff, and that seemed to help. Um, and at one point after the glow loop, um, I did take a nap because I was just really tired and knew I needed to crew him. And um I heard voices and I was just so delirious, I guess, at that point. And I realized I knew what was happening. It was her parents. That's when I like what you mentioned, um, they showed up. And then um she then went out for her final loop. And I mean, she pushed it, she uh took her time, but she knew what she could do, and I was so proud of her because she was there by herself in her little tent, and I try to help her as much as uh possible. So I'm glad that she did what she could and uh she finished strong.

SPEAKER_09

Well, there's no slouch there, 56 miles, 22 hours. That's and that's fantastic. And I just I just jotted these names and golly, we may have mentioned them before, but people who put in comments like I was there too, or whatever. I've got Melody, Christiana, Megan, and Sarah. And then the last thing I want to mention is if I've heard it once, I've heard it 50 times since this race has been over. Greg, you did a marvelous job uh lining all this up. And uh I I think it's fantastic, and uh kudos to you, buddy. You did terrific. Uh you ready to do it again next year?

SPEAKER_11

I mean, based on the fact that there's a vendor. diagram already of our tent layout for next year. I guess we're gonna have to do that.

SPEAKER_09

It's not a Venn diagram, but that's okay. There is a diagram. Yeah. That's okay. All right. All right, Greg, you have the floor.

SPEAKER_11

I mean, I I just want to, you know, just reiterate all the things that everyone has said today and just, you know, thank everyone for entrusting, you know, my bad ideas in terms of, you know, and and I'll take all the blame. Apparently like I'm such a bad influence that in the chicken coop of the the screaming chickens tent there were various wanted posters that were made and there was a wanted poster for me. So I am a I guess a a running fugitive uh when it comes to this community. But you know um yeah it was just it was such a fantastic time. A few more names that I think we just didn't mention. You know just again shout out to uh the rest of my teammates Beth, Diane and uh David, better known as George's dad. Also want to make sure um Allie without an E um was was also there. Uh we got everybody on loop there it is screaming chickens. Also uh shout out to Patrick Kelly and Martin uh they were part of team loop dare it is um and then also uh Jack one of your uh teammates uh Diana uh she's local she uh she did a great job uh so again just so just having all the relay teams there and then you know the other individuals doing the solo events from the community also special shout out to Michael from the Will Run for podcast uh he had every intent of going out and attempting the 100 miler but it just was not his day I remember checking in on him at one point and he was just sitting in his tent telling me that he couldn't keep anything down uh so he had to drop out after 11 loops which on its own is an amazing accomplishment. So Michael we're incredibly proud of you but um again I think this is just another event to add to the calendar where you know we talk about this in the Run Disney offseason about finding these events that can bring the community together and obviously we've established that at Flying Pig we've established that most definitely at Bird in hand and I'm just so excited now that we can add loopy looper to the list of those races and just being able to again share in that camaraderie it warms my heart just to to see just the friendship but also the accomplishments that that everyone brings um you know to the table in these events and uh yeah I guess uh 2027 loopy looper here we come and the weather's going to be perfect it better be friends thanks for joining us and congratulations thank you thanks thank you all right well loopy dominated the rise and run scene but we had other rise and runners out over the weekend continue on Saturday in Cape Elizabeth

Weekend Race Roundup Nationwide

SPEAKER_11

Maine a race founded by American marathon champion Joan Benoit Samuelson the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Caitlin ran it with her friend Rachel uh second time for Caitlin to finish this one Rachel helped Caitlin pace to a seven minute PR Caitlyn mentioned Carissa was one of the announcers race finishes at Shipyard Brewing.

SPEAKER_09

Caitlin waited around to get a picture with Joan Samuelson Audrey was there with other family members uh there were some elites in this field which was kind of neat point-to-point race had some logistics problem getting from the start to the finish or from the finish to the start that is for example the shuttles back to the start line they ended before the award ceremony finished not a good plan there uh much like Caitlin this is Audrey's second time running this way race challenging Hills kept her from a PR but she did come close now Audrey stuck with her mom Robin while Audrey's sisters Sophie and Muriel took a an easier pace this is Sophie's fourth time running it she's in her second trimester so an easier pace was probably a really good idea. Great fun great pace great race congratulations everybody there the Sorcerer Sprint took place in Jonesboro Tennessee Jennifer ran and it's a one mile sprint race part of an annual day-long Harry Potter birthday festival attendees both runners and others wander the magical fair for the afternoon before they line up for this short race at the finish line of course there's butterbeer chocolate frogs and hogwarts gummies to refuel Amanda with her son Nate was in Clute Texas for the Great Texas Mosquito Chase 5K she found this event while vacationing nearby part of the Great Texas Mosquito Festival warm and humid of course Nate ran in the 1200 division and won the dagum thing. Way to go Nate Amanda finished third in her age group and Brian was in Michigan for the Port Oneida half marathon he ran the half that supports the sleeping bear sand dunes in Michigan race takes you through varied terrain a steep three mile climb uh towards Pyramid point Brian highly recommends this race for those wanting to see a beautiful part of Michigan. He knocked the half out in two hours 15 minutes. Good finish time Brian on Sunday there was a Dragon Dash 5K in Lake Orion Michigan Bethany and Dan and Maverick their nine year old son and their friend Janet were all there. This event was rescheduled from May first time family 5K for Bethany Bethany and her family. Heavy rain the night before but okay for race day nine year old Maverick ran a 2850 for this 5k that's pretty daggum good I think for a nine year old I think it's pretty good for anybody. But good job Maverick Bethany PR'd this one Bethany PR'd at 31 minutes I assume Maverick PR'd I'm not doesn't say it here but I think that's gotta be right did not hear from our friend Anna who ran the Indian Queens half marathon in Cornwall in the UK I'm sure if as soon as I finish recording this podcast I'll look and there'll be a note in my Facebook page but didn't get it before we started Lori did the Hofbrahouse Cleveland Ohio 10K a new post knee replacement PR for Laurie bunch of friends drive up from Canton for this one made for a really fun event and we wrap up the race report in Buffalo New York where Rich ran the Run71615K third time here. 15K PR for Rich by just over that can't be 90 it's gotta be 90 seconds. I've written down 90 minutes it's got to be 90 seconds PRing of 15k by an hour and a half regardless. 15k PR good job Rich brand new course ran through one of Buffalo's oldest neighborhoods starts and ends at resurgence brewing the forecast thunderstorms held off leaving only a light rain which in summertime can be actually beneficial. Last two weeks for Rich featured his first half and this 15k PR and I got a couple other adventures I want to talk about Ruth did the Children's Hospital of Orange County CHOC walk at the Disneyland Resort beautiful morning for a wonderful nonprofit that helps so many children. And our buddy Boyd finished his 20th marathon following his recovery from leukemia. Now he didn't post where it was or when it was he just posted a celebratory finish line bit video but that is significant and congratulations to you boyd we are proud of you all right my friends that does it for the race report for episode 254 of the Rise and Run podcast.
