194: From Bathroom Breaks to Flat Tires: The Gang Answers Your Questions
What happens when you have nowhere to pee during a 4 a.m. training run? Which runDisney half marathon truly delivers the best experience? And does anyone actually know how to change a flat tire without calling AAA? This packed episode delivers answers to these burning questions and many more as we dive into our listener mailbag.
The debate gets heated when discussing whether Wine and Dine or Marathon Weekend offers the superior half marathon experience. Some hosts champion the festival atmosphere and after-party of Wine and Dine, while others can't deny the magic of running through Cinderella Castle during Marathon Weekend. For first-time marathoners, we offer tailored advice on choosing races that accommodate back-of-pack runners, with unanimous agreement that Disney provides one of the most supportive environments for debut distances.
We tackle the very real issue of imposter syndrome in running, sharing personal experiences of feeling out of place on the course. Whether it's being the only interval runner among continuous runners or questioning if you belong in a race at all, our conversation provides reassurance that your running journey is uniquely yours—and equally valid.
Disney Vacation Club members in our crew offer insider advice on securing rooms during race weekends, revealing the crucial difference between 11-month and 7-month booking windows and why "buy where you want to stay" remains the golden rule. For Disneyland runners, we highlight key differences from Disney World races, from sound ordinances to bag check logistics.
Between serious running topics, we detour into delightfully divisive debates about whether the chocolate toppings on ice cream are properly called "jimmies" or "sprinkles," confess our favorite ice cream flavors, and share hilariously desperate tales of bathroom emergencies during training runs.
Join us for this journey through running wisdom, Disney insights, and the everyday moments that connect us as a community of runners. Whatever your pace, distance, or running style—you're home here.

Speaker 4:jack hi, and you know what, in honor of muppets, I'm bolstered to the seat lexi.
Speaker 3:I'm bolstered to the seat, lexi. Sorry, I thought it was being funny Folks.
Speaker 1:We're moving the show to Pittsburgh, all right.
Speaker 4:I love those old Muppet characters. They're funny. Oh my gosh.
Speaker 3:Okay, back in the zone, hello.
Speaker 1:And John.
Speaker 2:How you doing, bob. Oh sorry, greg.
Speaker 1:Well, there's our first apologies and alibis of the episode. Obviously, as you can tell, I'm not Bob. Bob is very jealous of Bob, bob. I think we're all jealous of bob because bob's right now spending some lovely time in walt disney world with a lot of our friends. And you know what? None of those friends invited us to join them what the heck?
Speaker 1:there's way too many people in orlando, florida, but we're stuck in our homes. But we have to be here to give you an episode of the Rise and Run podcast. Speaker 1:The Rise and Run podcast is sponsored by our friends over at Magic Bound Travel. I learned this week through friends and social media that that other theme park down down the street from Disney you know the one I'm not allowed to mention it's pretty epic apparently they do this event around my least favorite holiday of Halloween, where people pay money to get the crap scared out of them for some reason.
Speaker 1:so if you're interested in that specialty ticketed event at that other theme park down the street, our friends over at magic bound travel can definitely get you booked for a vacation. Stay there. And I'll make this one last push and reminder If you are interested in attending the Rise and Run Cruise in April of 2026, following Springtime Surprise, and you are interested in a discounted interior stateroom on the Utopia of the Seas, you only have a few days left in order to grab one of those. Those are being released back to Royal Caribbean this upcoming Sunday. So if you're interested in that, be sure to visit magicboundtravelcom. And now to training.
Speaker 5:Training this week for Disneyland Halloween races. The long run is six and a half miles for both the half marathon and the chills and thrills challenge. Speaking of training, do any of you all have any training updates?
Speaker 4:yeah, so, um, I'm back with tom and I started back up on sunday and my whole body's sore. It's still sore from sunday. And then I had another gym day today. I'm like I didn't realize that. I guess I've just been not doing gym stuff very much lately, so I like the feeling of being sore, but I also don't walk right right now, so it just gets funny going up the stairs. Yeah, that feeling. Well, so I did one of the workouts technically wrong. I read the number wrong and so it was like these squats with like the weights and everything, and I thought it said 20. And so I have five sets of them, so five sets of 20. I go back after I finish all five sets and I said five sets of six.
Speaker 4:Oh my gosh, and so my thighs are just but I did all 20 of them.
Speaker 1:Is this your equivalent of not looking at an elevation map? But for weight training?
Speaker 5:Yes, she pulled a jack.
Speaker 1:Okay, I am so glad that pulling a jack can now be used in multiple references in multiple training sports.
Speaker 2:Thank God she didn't get the weight wrong, oh gosh, no, I like that.
Speaker 4:that would be smart. I mean, if I picked up the wrong thing, I could just put it back down, be like no, that's not the right way and just keep on moving, keep on trucking, but uh tom says I gotta lift it this way.
Speaker 2:I'm lifting this way anybody else well, we'll talk about my training later on in the race report.
Speaker 1:Ooh, I like that A nice strong tease out of John. You've been doing this podcasting thing for a while, so you know how to do that.
Speaker 2:We just started it. We just started it last week, right?
Speaker 1:Yeah, exactly, all right. Well, thankfully, for the second week in a row Run, disney has graced us with news and, ladies and gentlemen, we now have the medal reveal for the second annual and who knows when. The next one will be Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon Weekend out in Disneyland this upcoming September were released. Bob's not here, so I'll just go out of the way and say they're nice, but what are the rest of my wonderful co-hosts?
Speaker 3:think about these medals that's a Lexi race weekend written all over it really is, and I'm so upset that I'm not gonna get that Maleficent medal because she's beautiful, Mm-hmm. And the Cruella medal is beautiful, but I feel like and correct me if I'm wrong the Ursula medal. I feel like we've seen that before.
Speaker 1:Lexi, I had the exact same thought when I saw the medal Right, but then I can't remember whose Instagram stories. But then I can't remember whose Instagram stories. You know, I think it was Amanda's over at Once Upon a Marathon, and she actually had a photo of the Ursula medal from whatever that. I think it was when we came out of.
Speaker 3:COVID.
Speaker 2:It was a wine and dine. It was wine and dine.
Speaker 1:Somehow they were like wickedly delicious, or something like that. But when I saw that photo of that medal I was like, okay, no, these are two completely different medals. But no, my mind went to the exact same place.
Speaker 2:So I'm glad I'm not the only one. If you want to check out the old medals, go to our friend Matt's website, team Run Disney. He's got all the old medals. Go to, uh, our friend uh matt's website, team run disney. He's got all the old medals there. But I I still kind of think that corella corella medals a little morbid. Are those dog bones from dogs or for dogs to defeat?
Speaker 1:I didn't even think about that john, why are you going to such a dark?
Speaker 2:place.
Speaker 5:She's got to make her outfit oh, that's, that's, oh, that's so morbid it does look to me like they might be a different type of metal, like the actual like material that it's made out of, or the painting on them is different.
Speaker 1:Maybe it won't chip as much well, you know, it's funny enough that you say that, because I'm scrolling through them, uh, again right now and you look at the metal for the half. So the maleficent one, the one that lexi's really upset, that she's not getting, and there is a part of her staff that is like white yeah, where, like the rest of it is black. I'm like was that a design choice? Or did run disney take a promotional photo with a chipped metal?
Speaker 5:I did notice that greg right off the bat and I was like, well, maybe they are going to chip.
Speaker 2:But wait for I'm zooming in right now, greg. Oh, you're right that is a chip that is chipped or it's a bad paint job, where it's the paint from the uh vines overlapping the uh oh yeah, I see that oh okay, I I understand what you're saying now yeah yeah
Speaker 4:that's interesting I feel like disney wouldn't make a mistake maybe it's something special that happens there, maybe.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I know that there was a lot of speculation online in terms of you know, do any of these medals do anything special? Because for some reason, with the disneyland medals, I feel like we don't get the instagram reel that accompanies, like the walt disney world races, so so you can at least see some of the movement. I mean, I would have to imagine I think that you know people were saying that like the cruella metal, I think that could be like on a spring and what's up with cruella's face?
Speaker 1:yeah, it's giving me like like two-face vibes, yeah, like why do they I mean, it's giving me like Batman like two face vibes. Yeah.
Speaker 3:I mean it's a shadow, but I don't know.
Speaker 1:It looks kind of weird, yeah, unless that was an homage to like the Emma Stone version of the movies, the 10k in that metal is going to move and then it kind of looks like the challenge metal. The 10K in that metal is going to move, okay. And then it kind of looks like the challenge metal. If you look at Pain and Panic's eyes, they seem very muted compared to the rest of the metal. So I'm wondering if there is like some light up element.
Speaker 5:Like glass, oh, in the dark.
Speaker 1:Oh, okay, yeah yeah, yeah, very, very interesting.
Speaker 4:I think the Maleficent one might open. Does it look like it might open?
Speaker 1:I don't know but unfortunately that's the thing about halloween is that we have no expos to be able to have a, you know, a preview. So it's these things will not be on display until the expo in september, so I'm sure plenty of friends will be out there to be able to report back to us once they get them.
Speaker 3:Very interesting.
Speaker 4:There's things that I noticed, because even Ursula's face, if you look at the artwork, she has a shadow on her left side, and so I think it's just they're doing a whole shadow thing with all the characters.
Speaker 1:okay all right. So we heard from lexi lexi's favorite medal, even though none of us are running this race weekend. Lexi's favorite medal is the half. Alicia, how about you?
Speaker 5:um, I think the cruella okay, jack uh, maleficent.
Speaker 4:No, yes, I was not confident. It's a toss-up, john.
Speaker 2:We don't really talk about them much, but Captain Hook on the kids' race.
Speaker 1:Oh, yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2:I mean he looks like yep, I'm here, I'm ready, I'm ready to go Some.
Speaker 1:Captain Morgan, run, oh sorry, run, run, and I'm going to go with a dark horse in this race. I really like the Ursula medal, even though, again, it reminded me of something else from a previous race weekend. I think that's just. It's super intricate with Flossum and Jetsam in there. I thought that design was really, really cool.
Speaker 3:I want to change my answer.
Speaker 1:You can. You're not allowed, Lexi. It's been recorded.
Speaker 2:It's a $20 fee to change your answer.
Speaker 3:Man. But I really like the Pain and Panic medal too.
Speaker 5:Yeah, I like that one too.
Speaker 3:Because I'm scrolling back and forth and looking at all of them right now and I just can't decide. Villains are amazing.
Speaker 2:Like I said, if anyone is doing this race, bob needs that 10K medal, and if you don't want your medal, bob needs that medal.
Speaker 1:Oh, yes, because he dressed up last year. Okay, yeah, for the 5K. Yeah, okay.
Speaker 1:I'll get 60 now, but could you imagine all of these, um, you know, boxes and envelopes showing up at bob's house, and metal after metal after metal. Well, very cool, all right, so we got. So. Last week we got princess themes, we got medals now, so I guess that means the next set of news. What do you think we'll get next? Do you think we'll get wine and dine medals, or will we get a springtime surprise theme announcement? What do we think?
Speaker 1:I heard rumors of springtime surprise, like the first week of july, so okay, probably that well, actually we, we could probably figure out because lately their trend has been that they released the themes two weeks before club run disney uh opens.
Speaker 1:So let's see. So springtime surprise registration for club run disney is july 22nd. So yeah, so yeah, that that probably lines up beginning of, uh, beginning of july. So, okay, fingers crossed there, all right.
Speaker 1:Well, now we're going to move on to the main crux of this week's episode and and I'm gonna be honest with you guys I don't know if you feel the same I think these listener question episodes are some of my favorites, because we get such a wide array of questions and, trust me, we got a wide array for this one as well, too, as well too, and I think it just generates some really good logical information, but also a ton of fun and, as you'll see with some of these questions could provide some very, very funny answers. But we'll go with a more logistical question to start, and the first one that we're going to go with is from our friend, stephanie, and she asks what is your favorite run disney half marathon? It sounds like stephanie is looking to step up her run disney journey from the 10k to a greater distance. So, gang of the halves that uh, run disney does, which one would you pick?
Speaker 1:marathon weekend because wine and dine yeah we got contention already I love it all right jack. Why? Why do you say marathon weekend?
Speaker 4:because, like it's usually kind of like the weather's just right for it usually and it's nice and cool. You can go all out, in my opinion, with costumes, because you don't have to worry about heat too, too, too much. Um, because it's obviously january, like, you have the whole, like four days of running. It's just a whole mass of people. The crowds are the biggest during that weekend, so it it's a lot of encouragement and it's just grand old time of fun.
Speaker 1:All right. Now the counter argument from Lexi Lexi. Why should Stephanie choose the wine and dine half?
Speaker 3:I have four words for you.
Speaker 3:Whoa Four, bob, not Greg Food and wine festival 100 agree I I think I think that just doing half because I mean I will say I am partial because that was my first run disney weekend and so it will always have a special place in my heart but going out like I feel like the vibe is just really chill and then you get to celebrate at Epcot afterwards and um, you get I mean I know it's not much, but it's a $15 gift card to the food and wine festival and um, I don't know that that will always be my favorite race weekend, I think, and I feel like it's a great place to do your first, because it's not I I almost my counter argument would be against marathon weekend is I feel like marathon weekend may be a little more serious and I will say in lexi's defense about any weekend, if you're going to get your bang for your buck, I will say Wine and Dine is the best weekend to go because you do get the $15 gift card.
Speaker 4:It's the first race weekend at Run Disney, so everybody's excited for the whole season and then having that party included with your half marathon, that whole party, I mean they do character meet and greets. The rides are really low weights and most people don't stay very long because they're so tired from waking up early that they end up leaving. So the park becomes extremely empty. But the only con about that party is every time I've gone it's been bad weather, with the exception of once.
Speaker 2:Here's my point counterpoint it really depends what's your goal. If you want to run through the castle, you got to do it on Princess or the half marathon during marathon weekend.
Speaker 2:But I agree with Lexi and everybody else. I agree with Lexi and everybody else Wine and dine marathon, I think, is a little bit better because I think it's the big highlight of marathon weekend and, princess, you run through the castle but then you're on that road for 11 more miles. Here, I think, you go through Epcot, you go through the boardwalk, you hit some Hollywood studios, you get a little more park time. It's a little more things to see and do, I think, than the road in and out of Magic Kingdom.
Speaker 1:If this was Wine and Dine in the mid to late 2010s, I think slam dunk it would be wine and dine really because you know again, like you all mentioned, you have the after party. But back in that time when run disney was creative enough to not have every single race start and end at epcot, the thing that was really billed about wine and dine half was it was the only half marathon where you got to run through three parks right here, and it has been a very, very long time since that has happened since 2018, because that was the one time that I got to do that I mean for a lot of us here on.
Speaker 1:You know this week's recording one of our first ever run disney half marathons was in 2016 that race started at espn wide world of sports, and ended at epcot, and then jack, you know, similar to what you were saying then they shifted it where the start line was at the ttc, and then you finished at Epcot and again afforded you the opportunity to touch all those parks. So, stephanie, here would be my advice for you. I think if you're looking for the quintessential run Disney experience, I would say Wine and Dine because of, again, the distance and the after party party. But if this is specifically going to be your first half marathon ever, then I'm gonna say marathon weekend and or princess yeah because, even though it's a bit of a slog getting there and back, it'd be really cool to say hey.
Speaker 4:During my first half marathon, I ran down main street, usa and ran through cinderella's castle yeah, and I think, and I think that's pretty cool yeah, yeah, princess was my first half and that was the one thing I really remembered and was in all of I have a question from regina, and she asked have you ever experienced imposter syndrome while training or during a race?
Speaker 5:Well, her question is specifically about during training or a race and I haven't necessarily during training or during a race, but I have post-race my first dopey. I felt very much imposter syndrome, which is why I constantly am telling my clients take pictures and take in all of the moments of your races, because if I didn't have those, I don't know that I would believe that I did it. But something that got me through that afterward was the fact that I knew I did something really hard and I wanted to experience it again. And getting through that moment was really, really special and showed myself that I really can do hard things and show myself that I really can do hard things.
Speaker 1:For me, I would say I've never really experienced it because for me, we have such great training resources whether that's having a coach or if you're doing this on your own and you're using the training plans that are on rundisneycom as long as you're sticking to that for a majority of your time, all of those plans or your coach is going to get you ready to make sure that you are in a optimal position in order to finish that race and finish that training run. So for me personally, I can never say that I've had it. I mean sure, maybe, I mean great. There was that one when I had my 23 miler. Last was right before one and nine last year and when I had my first ever emotional breakdown on a run.
Speaker 1:I never sure did I doubt myself Absolutely, but I never had the thought process of, oh, I'm never going to be able to finish this run or no, I'm never going to be able to finish this race. I think my doubt was from the perspective of I'm never going to achieve this goal that I've set out for myself, and I think achieving a goal with imposter syndrome, and imposter syndrome in terms of finishing the race, I think are two very, very, completely different things.
Speaker 5:Another thing I want to mention about that too, is I've found from talking with people that imposter syndrome a lot of times comes from comparing, and I would encourage you, if you're listening to this, to not compare yourself to others. Remember, if you run, even for a couple of seconds, you are a runner, and just because somebody else is doing something different doesn't mean that you are not also a runner and doesn't mean that you can't do something amazing. Remember, you are doing more than a lot of people can do and that's great. And even if you're not where somebody else is, you're still working towards a goal and that is a great achievement.
Speaker 2:For me, my area there's not many run walkers and so you're out in the park and you're running with somebody. Then you slow down and stop. Are you okay? Is everything going on? You know? Is everything okay? No, I'm fine, I'll just do intervals, but you stop running. It's like, yeah, I know it's okay, but then you're doing the Galloway shuffle where you're shuffling back and forth with people and that's the only time you can say, is it imposter syndrome? It's just that you're not doing the norm. Let's rephrase that You're not doing what people think is the norm that you got to run a full 26 miles, 13 miles, whatever you're doing, and it works. I mean you miles, whatever you're doing, you you know, and it works. I mean you'll talk about it in races. You do the Galloway method one walk, one, whatever you want to call it and you'll see people and all of a sudden, at the end of the race, that person in front of you is behind you and you walk past them three or four times.
Speaker 3:I think it's really important to remember that your race is not their race. And even I mean like I mean I've told the story before of whenever I ran a 10K in Paris and I was the only person doing run walk method, but that was probably one of the most enjoyable races that I've had because it was so beautiful and I was in a city that I love and I was having fun listening to people speak French all around me. But I mean I'm not going to lie in the middle of it. When I was the only one at the very end I was like, should I be here? I don't know. And you just have to combat those thoughts and you have to remember that you're doing the run walk method because that's what works for you.
Speaker 5:All right.
Speaker 1:On a less serious note, megan wants to know jimmy's or sprinkles so this question came from megan and I know megan was originally from the northeast, even though she's she's living down in florida now. So obviously I think I know everyone here knows what sprinkles are, but does everybody know what jimmy?
Speaker 1:Well, our version from the Northeast I don't know if you're the same with yours- so to me, jimmy's is just a Philadelphia slash Northeast way of talking about sprinkles, or the non-rainbow sprinkles as well too. So to me, even though I have always lived in this area, I have always been a sprinkles guy through and through, so that that that, for me, is the correct answer we don't.
Speaker 5:We don't ever call them jimmies here, um, we only call them sprinkles. But I always thought, like the little tiny round rainbow ones were the jimm and the longer one sprinkles were the sprinkles.
Speaker 2:I've been North Jersey. I mean we always we call them rainbow sprinkles or sprinkles, and the Jimmy's were the brown ones. I mean I don't know if that's that's what they call them up here.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's, that's what they call them up here, yeah, so like down the Philly area it's more. The concept of Jimmy's is more universal in terms of like, any and all Like. It wasn't associated with the color, it was. If you were getting the little tiny sugary things, yeah, thrown all over your ice cream. People, at least in this area, say Jimmy's, but again, I'm always a sprinkles guy through and through.
Speaker 2:You got to get the sprinkles anyway. Absolutely.
Speaker 4:I just saw a picture of it. You guys are going to hate me.
Speaker 2:Sprinkles. You never had sprinkles, right.
Speaker 1:No, I've had sprinkles, this is also the same girl that had her first peanut butter and jelly sandwich about three years ago.
Speaker 4:I've never had Jimmy's so I can't judge it, but I've had sprinkles and it's just okay.
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 4:Wow I know Wow.
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 5:All right, wow, all right. So sprinkles are something that we put on ice cream and tara wants to know what is your favorite ice cream flavor that's a tough one so mine is complicated.
Speaker 3:I have a complicated answer. I like chocolate, chocolate chip cookie dough, so normally chocolate chip cookie dough is vanilla with chocolate chip cookie dough pieces, but I like the chocolate ice cream with the cookie dough pieces in it. That's my answer.
Speaker 1:I think that's a violation. I'm sorry, any, anything that has a a cookie or a brownie or peanut butter or or some type of candy mixed into it. It has to be vanilla ice cream. You, you cannot have chocolate like especially, like you know, say you're getting like a mashed up like Reese's peanut butter cup in ice cream. If you have the chocolate ice cream, that ice cream is going to mask the chocolate of the candy and you just, and you just can't do that.
Speaker 2:You're correct. Correct Because you are correct, because I don't know if it's a regional thing, but friendlies around here used to have a Jim Dandy or a Reese's Peanut Cup sundae, and if you had chocolate ice cream with it you'd miss the flavor profile.
Speaker 1:No, I don't think there's anything wrong with like adding like a chocolate syrup or like a chocolate fudge to it, but it has to stay vanilla ice cream.
Speaker 4:So it's not necessarily it's gelato. Can I do gelato? There's one specifically Like do you guys know like those pint-sized Talenti things that you can?
Speaker 2:get at like Publix or Kroger.
Speaker 4:They're so good that they're hard to open, but that's how you know. People are desperate to eat it because it tastes so good that you have to like hit it against a counter or put underneath hot water.
Speaker 2:Can we get a video of that?
Speaker 4:Well, you can watch videos of it on YouTube. It's actually a thing Like people will try and find ways just to open up these Talenti things, but their sea salt caramel gelato is.
Speaker 3:Can we get a video of you trying to open it?
Speaker 4:up. I think that's what we want. I look at David and I say, can you do it? Then he gets it off in one twist, I think it's maybe that I've loosened it. I've loosened it after hitting it on the counter a few times, thinking it might like Now that you're back to Tom, you won't have to have him loosen it oh yeah, I don't see any kind of ice cream or gelato in my future, because it's a lot of dairy too and it messes with my Okay.
Speaker 5:On that note, I was going to say that I can't eat ice cream anymore, but my favorite was um the brownie batter overload at Culver's. I would get that it had pieces in it, um, and hot fudge and caramel with their custard, and it was so good. But I do have a question for you all. Do you have, or have you ever had, a hot fudge, shake or malt? Is that a thing? Where you guys are from? I've never had a shake before.
Speaker 1:Can you describe it? And then no, no, no, sorry.
Speaker 5:Of course you haven't had a shake, jack yeah, so a hot fudge shake would. What I thought it would be is literally just a vanilla shake with hot fudge mixed into it, so like you make. But it's very common here in Minnesota to get a hot fudge shake.
Speaker 1:Okay, all right, so I'm picking up what you're putting down here. So like a chocolate shake, but it's hot fudge shake.
Speaker 5:Okay, all right, so I'm picking up what you're putting down here. So like a chocolate shake, but it's hot fudge instead of chocolate yeah, so to me, um, there is.
Speaker 1:There is a restaurant in wilmington, delaware. Um, I can probably get to it in about a half an hour from my house and actually it's a pretty famous place. It's been around for a really long time and it used to be frequented by former President Biden all the time.
Speaker 5:Interesting.
Speaker 1:But they have. Now they do that exact thing, but it's called a black and white.
Speaker 5:Yes, interesting, interesting.
Speaker 1:So again, I don't know if it's specifically hot fudge, but it's like some type of chocolate sauce mixed into the vanilla ice cream to make a shake. It has to be hot fudge, but it's like some type of chocolate sauce mixed in to the vanilla ice cream to make a shake, otherwise okay.
Speaker 5:So, okay, all right. So a little bit of difference there, okay, but the reason I asked is because it's, like I said, it's very common here and we went to 50. No, what is that place called? That's in hollywood studios? Oh, sc. No, the one where.
Speaker 4:Oh, 50s Primetime 50s Primetime.
Speaker 5:yeah, and we ordered a hot fudge shake and the lady looked at us like we had six heads, because apparently nobody orders that. So I was really interested to see if it is just a Minnesota thing.
Speaker 1:Interesting. Okay, alright, so for me overall, overall, my favorite ice cream flavor is cookies and cream because again some type of cookie or candy incorporating vanilla, ice cream, lexi, but but if I had to go and actually jack you, trigger the memory for me. When you were talking about you said salted caramel, uh, gelato a sea salt caramel oh, sea salt.
Speaker 1:Yes, yes, okay, and this is perfect if you ever want to do this during a rise and run meetup, because you know we all meet at the food truck area and right across the way from that is salt and straw and they do a salted caramel ribbons ice cream, it's incredibly simple.
Speaker 1:It's just the vanilla ice cream and those caramel ribbons. But let me tell you it is absolutely fabulous and because whenever I travel for work on the west coast, uh, you know, a few of my co-workers and I we have like a tradition that we go to salt and straw. So the fact that you can get it at disney world and have a nice rise and run connection with it, um, definitely, definitely give that one a try my favorite ice cream.
Speaker 2:there's like it's between two ice creams right now it's either toasted almond or pistachio, having the little nuts in it kind of gives that little extra crunch.
Speaker 5:Okay, okay.
Speaker 1:I know we were spending a lot of time talking about ice cream and I love it, and I think we might need to do this as a social media poll, but I just want to get all of your reactions to this. I went on a business trip once with two coworkers who had the exact same perfect ice cream combination and I thought it was incredibly gross. So here we go. They paired mint chocolate chip ice cream with caramel sauce Yay, or nay no.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you got to kill the flavor of the mint chocolate chip.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I'm not a mint chocolate chip fan.
Speaker 1:Okay, all right, I am so glad because, let me tell you, actually I think we were in San Francisco. So we went to the Ghirardelli, like you know, the the famous one right there on the wharf, and they and the one guy ordered it and my co-worker turned to him was like oh my god, that's what I'm gonna get too. And I'm like you two are disgusting, because I just thought that sounded so gross. So I I feel somewhat vindicated there. It's perfect, excellent. Thank you very much.
Speaker 2:Our friend Hollywood wants to know if you got a flat tire, could you change it yourself on the side of the road?
Speaker 3:Yes by calling AAA. I was fixing to say do I have Wi-Fi?
Speaker 1:All right, so this question is probably an attack on me. Oh, you can't, this will be interesting. One is right, so this question is probably an attack on me.
Speaker 2:Oh, you can't. This will be interesting.
Speaker 1:Well, so the other week he had sent me a photo of him fixing his riding lawnmower and I had a situation at the end of last grass-cutting season where my tire on the the one tire on the tractor, deflated so much that it fell off of like the rim, so like there would have been no way for me, even if I inflated this thing, to to like properly get it back on there. And then I think, but he was doing something where he was like fixing his transmission, and I was like, if that happened to me, I would like just curl up in the ball and you know, and just be like someone help me, please. Or like I would like run to my neighbor's house who's like a diesel engine mechanic and be like please, please, help me, or something like that. So I feel like this is an attack on me personally. But to answer the question, tony, I think I probably could, but I'm going Jack's route because I pay for AAA and if I got it.
Speaker 1:You might as well use it, Although I will share a funny story. There was one time my wife and I we were sharing a car because one of our cars was in the shop or whatever and we're driving to work and we get a flat, so we pull off into this like ritzy neighborhood so we immediately call triple a and they'll be like we'll be there in like 45 minutes. Well, like three neighbors must have like walked by us or were like peering out from us, like from their like windows inside their homes. Next thing I know there's a cop pulled up behind me with his lights on and comes up and taps the window and is like are you folks okay? And we're like oh yeah, we're fine, we're just waiting for triple a to to change the tire. He was like you call them, cancel that I'll help you change the tire.
Speaker 1:I think that all these people thought that we were like, uh, marv, you know from home alone, and we were like case in the neighborhood. So you know we could, you know, go on on the stealing rampage or something like marv I.
Speaker 2:I can. I can change a tire, I can pump my own gas even though I live in Jersey, I forgot about that, okay, and I can drive a manual transmission too, tony, so I should not get stuck anywhere, hopefully and the weird thing is, that question gets loaded. We were talking about it a little earlier. Some cars now don't even come with a spare tire, so I found that out today.
Speaker 3:That's disappointing I want to learn how to drive a manual.
Speaker 2:Somebody teach me who don't you like have take their, take their car and practice with it okay, what's the weirdest place on a training, run or walk?
Speaker 4:have you had a stop to pee?
Speaker 1:oh yes, and this question comes from our friend uh maggie, over at magic bound travel. I I love her creativity when it comes to this, so gang.
Speaker 4:Don't be shy.
Speaker 2:I never really had a weird place. I mean basically port-a-potties restrooms, hop in some restaurant, unless you call that a weird place.
Speaker 3:So my story is I kind of peed in my pants.
Speaker 2:That was sweat. That's pants. That was sweat. Well, that's unique. That was sweat right.
Speaker 3:It was sweat, but it was also like on the side of the road on the way into my apartment complex because I didn't make it to the bathroom in time.
Speaker 1:This episode of the Rise and Run podcast is brought to you by depends.
Speaker 5:I only once have been nowhere close to a bathroom and gone into the woods and gone, but I don't. I don't know if that's necessarily like a weird place. Otherwise I purposefully choose routes that have bathrooms or porta potties or a gas station something yeah, I definitely.
Speaker 4:I I mean besides the woods during a train run, but I mean, oh god y'all make that sound like the woods is normal.
Speaker 4:It is not normal well yes, it is so my, my abnormal one happened during my Daytona 100. I had to really go and I I didn't see any porta potties and it was about 4am in the morning. The closest thing I could find before I was going to pee myself was to go behind these bushes, but it was like literally a short wall, the bushes and me wedged in between, and just behind the short wall was apartment complex and I mean they could have saw two moons that night. I really don't know like I really had to go. I was like go.
Speaker 1:Was it a full moon jack? Or was it a waxing or waning gibbous?
Speaker 4:but um, yeah, and I had to do that, I think twice, but it was so early in the morning I had to make sure no cars were coming, because it's like the bushes weren't even that big in the first place either.
Speaker 1:So you kind of could you imagine running an ultra and having to do that and then getting arrested for indecent exposure?
Speaker 4:well, that's what I was worried about. You had to, like, look like the. Not everybody was asleep, though, and there was a brick wall behind me. Technically it wasn't very high, but oh boy, oh boy.
Speaker 1:Well, maggie, I think you win the award for the most creative question that we got.
Speaker 2:We need her answer.
Speaker 4:Yes, yes, yes, yeah.
Speaker 1:So, Maggie, we expect a Facebook post of the weirdest place that you had to go to the bathroom during a training run. Alright, I'm going to grab the next one here, and this one probably can be best answered by Alicia John and myself. And it comes from Stephanie and she says do any of us own DVC? She is considering buying into it in from Stephanie and she says do any of us own DVC? She is considering buying into it in the future and she is not sure if it makes sense for her. And then she did have a follow-up question there and she says is it difficult getting DVC rooms during race weekends?
Speaker 1:yes it's a loaded question yes, it is a very loaded question, but let's tackle the first part. First, explain why it makes sense to you.
Speaker 2:The question is does it make sense? There's two paths to go by. So do you want full DVC options or do you want just a DVC resale? Because there's two different ways. Like, you don't get the discounts, you don't get the special perks if you buy resale, but you save a lot of money.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'll back it up a little bit further here, because the whole concept of buying direct versus buying resale is a whole conversation within itself. I'll just take it more from a 1,000-foot level in terms of just buying it in general. Does it make sense? For me it does because, granted, I love math, I love making spreadsheets on google sheets and and everything like that. To me the light bulb went off when, when I did the math. Now, grant, this is based off of because you know, like john said about the whole idea of direct versus resale, I bought resale. So you know I bought it at a discounted price and when I ran the math on it, essentially I said yes to it when I found out that I could stay at the polynesian for roughly the same cost as it would be to stay at pop century wow and and for me that's that is just benefit in spades there.
Speaker 1:Now, obviously, your mileage will vary on that, based on what resort you buy, how many points you buy, um, the time of year, the type of type of room that you go into and such. You know, there's a lot, a lot of factors that do go into that. But I like the fact that again, you're getting deluxe level accommodations for the price of a low level, moderate to a higher end, value, value. And the fact that once you do have, either if you've paid for it in full or you do some type of financing with it, by the time you have that paid off, you've essentially you're almost kind of like pre paying for your vacations and trying to beat out inflation. And the fact that you own these vacation deeds anywhere from, you know, depending on again, depending on the resort that you go with, anywhere from 20 to 50 years, is to me makes a makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 2:And that's another point. And, stephanie, don't know how old you are, but if you're in your fifties or sixties, buying DVC might not be the answer for you Cause, like you said, new, new resort, 50 years from now. 40 years from now, are you going to get the benefit out of it? Where, like, for example, me, I bought mine years ago, mine's been paid off. All I do is pay an annual dues and I basically estimated out with my annual dues and taking what I paid for the points over the 40 year contract. I am way ahead of the game. At like, probably 22, I'd say roughly about 2000 to $2,500 a year is my, my cost for DVC for the 40 years I'm going to have it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, usually I've seen the statistic again depending on where you buy the resort that like, by the time you've hit your like, anywhere from like six to eighth trip or something like that, you're you have hit the break-even point by that point. And so the you know, the fact that you know, especially like you know. Let's take, for example, the, the new, even though they haven't technically announced it yet the new resort that they're building right or in between Fort Wilderness and Wilderness Lodge. Once that comes online and they start selling contracts for it, that's going to be 50 years. The fact that if you're breaking even well into a quarter of the way through the contract, I think that's a really big beneficial value. Now, all of this to say John, alicia and myself are not financial advisors and you need to do what's best for you, so please don't sue us. Okay, but let's tackle the second half of that question. Alicia, is it tough to get rooms for race weekends?
Speaker 5:Yes, and I feel like it's getting harder as they build more things.
Speaker 1:Okay, John. What is your opinion on it?
Speaker 2:It depends when you book and where you want to stay.
Speaker 5:That's true.
Speaker 2:With DVC, your home resort, you could book 11 months out. If you want, like I have Saratoga, I could book Saratoga 11 months out. I know the race seasons, I can plan out 11 months out and book and I'm pretty okay getting a room where I want to stay. But in the past I was able to get rooms at other resorts at seven months out. That has not been happening anymore at seven months out. That has not been happening anymore. So but if you're happy with your home resort for a race weekend I think you'll be you'll be fine. If you want to try to gamble and say, okay, let me try to get you know animal kingdom for race weekend. Uh, and you're not at your home resort, you might have a problem.
Speaker 5:I think to that point too. I think it's wise to really do a pros and cons list of different resorts and figure out what is the best for you for choosing a home resort, especially if you're going to use it for a race weekend or something of that nature.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but best advice that I can give if you decide to pull the trigger on dbc is buy where you want to stay. I think, when it comes down to this, that is the most important thing that you need to figure out. Like john said, usually at you know as long as you know, say, if you're going to go for marathon weekend, you know that a couple of weeks after you get home it's going to be time to book for the following year and again, you're getting that priority ahead of everyone else. When it comes to DVC, you got to remember the two windows the 11-month window, which is when you can book your home resort, and then the seven-month window, which is when you can book anywhere else, Again all based on availability. So I'll give you an example Just a couple of weeks ago, my wife and I booked a room, one of those new duo studios in the Polynesian Tower.
Speaker 1:That's the room that right now we have booked for springtime surprise in 2026. But once September rolls around and our seven month window opens, I think we're going to dip into that availability, see what options that we have and then maybe try and save a few points here or there for a future vacation down the road. I know that was a lot of information that we just gave. If you have, Stephanie, if you have more specific questions, feel free to reach out to us on Facebook or you can send us an email at thegangatrisenrunpodcastcom. We can help answer it further. There was obviously we don't want to bore everyone to tears who is not DVC or was not interested in DVC, but I will give one really really good resource, and that is the website and the YouTube channel DVC Fan. They have all sorts of great content about weighing the pros and cons, giving a breakdown of all the resorts and such like that. It's a really good resource if this is something you're truly considering.
Speaker 4:David asks what do we all do for a living and what do we study in college?
Speaker 1:well, we all studied podcasting right this is our full-time job I think that's just you well, jack, what do you do for a living?
Speaker 4:well, it's an association to what lexi does as well, of sorts. I'm in production, accounting uh for tv and film. Uh, lexi and I are currently working on a project right now for peacock and um, I'm her boss, she is my boss. Well, I, I have a. I have a few bosses. Let me, I am the lower person on the totem pole. But yeah, she is one of my bosses.
Speaker 1:I have a Patreon idea Lexi, go live or do a recording of Jack's performance review and then we'll post that as a special Patreon-only episode.
Speaker 3:What would I say?
Speaker 4:Okay, Do I get to do a boss review too?
Speaker 1:Oh yes, An undercover boss.
Speaker 2:That's a skip review, yeah.
Speaker 1:Well, jack, how about the second part of the question? What did you study in college?
Speaker 4:Not, production accounting. I never thought I'd be anywhere near numbers, let me put it that way. No, I was doing apparel merchandising and product development with a minor in marketing. I really wanted to go into fashion design over at Kent State but I got more money offered over at BGSU and so I was like, well, I can still do fashion but merchandising and it just was like it was a good experience, but I just feel like I could have chosen something different.
Speaker 1:Jack, I will say your alma mater is lovely to run around in the middle of January.
Speaker 3:Thanks.
Speaker 1:I was being sarcastic. It was cold and desolate.
Speaker 3:Rude, All right.
Speaker 1:Lexi. So we know that you work in production, accounting and you're Jack's boss, but what did you study in college?
Speaker 3:I do. I work in production accounting. I'm a payroll accountant now and I studied accounting in college. And I studied accounting in college I knew from well. We have home videos of me saying I want to be a banker like my mama, but I knew I wanted to be in accounting from like 11th grade when I took my first accounting class.
Speaker 3:Really, that's impressive and then never changed your major or anything. And, coming from small town, mississippi, when I said I wanted to be in entertainment accounting, they were like, oh, casinos. And I was like no, like movies. They were like oh, like, oh, that exists. Like, yeah, somebody's got to do it, it's fun. And so then met Jack. We were in Orlando, we moved to Atlanta together and I was on set as an extra, got to talking to one of the assistant directors who knew a production accountant, got me an interview and three weeks later I was on the job. Been there ever since.
Speaker 1:Do you have a SAG card, since you were an extra?
Speaker 3:No.
Speaker 4:I process all the background extras. They're all non-union.
Speaker 1:Okay, gotcha, gotcha.
Speaker 3:But fun fact, Jack and I were in Avengers Infinity.
Speaker 4:War. No, here's the fun fact. Let's be honest, the better fun fact was in Atlanta, when we were doing background stuff, we were actually walkers on Walking Dead. Oh, yeah, we were. Yeah, I got killed three times. It was very cool.
Speaker 1:Wow, now in Avengers did you both get dusted or no?
Speaker 3:No, no, it was the beginning, so you know the scene at the very beginning of the movie when they're in New York.
Speaker 4:Avengers Affinity War it's.
Speaker 3:Avengers, affinity War, yeah, yeah, when they're in New York and the alien round ship comes down and Doctor Strange and Hulk and.
Speaker 1:Iron.
Speaker 3:Man all run out and they're like who are you? And then they're like Thanos sent us to destroy. Blah, blah, blah.
Speaker 4:We were running right behind them it was probably my favorite day on set it was so much fun. I think I had. I've booked some acting gigs with my agent, but I still think that day specifically was my most favorite day ever on set. It was just so chaotic, and beautiful yeah.
Speaker 3:And Robert Downey Jr was everything you would want him to be, and I still remember, at the very end of the day we'd been there like what 14 hours or something crazy like that.
Speaker 4:It was a long day. It was a long day. We went and got food afterwards.
Speaker 1:Did you get shawarma?
Speaker 3:day, it was a long day. Food afterwards did you get shawarma? No, we got hibachi. We did. There was a group of us extras and we all went and got hibachi together. But I remember like they wrapped and they were like, okay, everybody's good. And rdj comes out and he said that's all right, guys, I didn't mess up. That time you can go home. Yes, it's perfect. And also I am a travel agent and that's kind of a new development.
Speaker 1:So, yeah, all right, John, we know you're retired, but what did you used to do?
Speaker 2:So I'm kind of retired. But so my original job, main job, was I was it. I I did it for 20 something, 20 something years so, and that that was my main job.
Speaker 1:Right now I'm a parking violations officer, but that's my part-time retirement job john, I wish the, the, the show parking wars would still be on and, and you know, maybe you can get promoted down here to filling the PPA, because because that was the, the parking crew that they followed in that original series and I mean, the PPA is infamous down here with people, you know, like giving out tickets and then people just like cursing them out on the sidewalk. I would, I would love to see you in an interaction like that.
Speaker 2:I had a couple of those today.
Speaker 1:But what did you study in college?
Speaker 2:Okay, I did not go to college, okay.
Speaker 1:Oh, okay.
Speaker 2:Really, I did go to the Institute of Audio Research and I studied audio engineering. I was going to be a big record producer.
Speaker 4:Oh, I love that.
Speaker 2:But you know life gets in the way and you know, back in those days, to get involved you had to do an internship, a free internship. And it's like, oh, we're going to call you at any time of the hour and you have to come in and help, like, if the people need to get picked up to the airport, that's your job, I go, okay Then. So you're working days and working nights. One's paying you, one's not. It's like, okay, I'm getting paid doing this work, I'm, I'm going in that direction.
Speaker 1:Very cool, Alicia. How about you?
Speaker 5:So I actually have three jobs. Um, I went to school for nursing, I work in long-term care, as we know. I'm also a running coach, and then I also work at a theater as a bartender and an usher. I did not know that. I don't think any of you knew that. I knew you were a bartender, did you?
Speaker 2:Yeah, you said it once before. Yeah, I think you mentioned it to me when I talk to you one of the one of those past days.
Speaker 5:not only can she buy the margaritas. She can make them say we only do wine and beer now, but we used to make drinks. Can you make?
Speaker 4:me a lemon drop the next time I see you. I love lemon drops.
Speaker 1:I, I'm, my mind is literally blown right now and I just I'm having this picture now at the next meetup and just a nice little bar stand for Alicia and Alicia's margaritas Not, only are they on me, but they're made by me too, that's awesome.
Speaker 4:That's amazing, Alicia.
Speaker 1:So cool. I agree, I know you guys joked at the top. When I was a student at Temple University, I studied broadcasting, telecommunications and mass media. I also had a minor in political science. I'm not sure why I did that exactly. Maybe I thought I was gonna work for like cnn or something like that you would have been a great president oh, thank you. Yeah, because, because my political science minor would have got me really far in today's political spectrum.
Speaker 1:Yeah, uh, but you know president well, I've always said that if I did become president, my first executive order would be that if you had a philadelphia cheesesteak on your menu, uh, you need to make sure that it does not have sauteed bell peppers on it, because no, matter where you go.
Speaker 1:that's what you see on the menu and that's not how we do it in philly. So it that would be, that would be my first executive. But, um, in terms of my career, yes, I am a video and audio editor. Um, I work for a medical publishing company, so it's a lot of videos of doctors talking about the latest and greatest techniques and devices and drugs. Unfortunately, it's not the TV shows that I thought I would be editing when I was in college. But, fun fact, it was my junior year of college. I had an internship in the city for the company that used to do the show Trading Spaces. Oh, and they had all those TLC shows. So Trading Spaces, baby Story, wedding Story so I got to work on those and I had such a great internship, they hired me straight out of the internship to do part-time assistant editing work. So I made my credited television debut before I even graduated, on the last season of Trading Spaces.
Speaker 4:That's really cool.
Speaker 1:And, fun fact, you always thought the show was technically shot in two days. Here's a secret.
Speaker 3:They did it in three. Yes, there was always.
Speaker 1:I would always have a bin of footage called Day Zero Shoot. So that's when they do the like. That's when they would do the thing with Paige Davis of like swapping the keys and stuff like that.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah, but what?
Speaker 1:they make you do is if you ever go back and watch an old show. Everyone wears the same clothing the entire shoot. So then that way when they do the various scenes. There's continuity in terms of that. So very, very cool. We learned. We learned today that alicia's a bartender and the other two ladies were extras and avengers.
Speaker 2:That's pretty darn cool okay, our friend courtney asked uh, for a first time, disneyland runner, what are some differences from the start areas of Disneyland versus Disney world? I have to bail out of this one because I have never done a Disneyland race.
Speaker 4:Uh, Lexi and I have. Uh, we did it back in 2024. Yeah, the first one.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 4:When they came back. Super exciting, loved, loved. Disneyland Um, I would say the biggest ones, especially for the 5k. Don't even try and bring. If you're going to Disneyland, don't even try and bring a drop bag for that one, because the race starts in the Disneyland park. I think the queue just trying to get into the park goes all the way out and it's just. If you were to leave that line, drop the bag off wasn't it guest services or guest relations or something like that near the park, you'd have to get back in and it would just. I literally saw people running with their drop bags. Just, don't even bring one, just have like a little belt on you and then you're good and for a 5k you don't need one. Yeah, and honestly, it was such a really really cool race because you never start a race inside the park and then finish inside the park like that's one of the coolest 5ks I've ever done.
Speaker 4:Um, uh, with the start area for like the 10k and halves at disneyland versus disney world. Disney world you have lots of character, meet and greets and everything you. You have a DJ and whatnot. They're making it fun. It's like a big, huge party. And then the corrals you just walk right on over. Well, disneyland Lexi could agree. There's just not that they don't have that. They have like a sound ordinance because you're right next to all the hotels that are not Disney owned, and so it's going to be a bit quieter. There's no characters to meet either at the start lines.
Speaker 3:Yeah, what else am I missing? On that one, I think you pretty much got it. As far as the setup goes, it's like once you get into the start area it's very similarly labeled to how disney world is, so you know, like they have the sign that says drop bags, they have the sign that say corral this way, um.
Speaker 4:So I mean, as long as you follow the signs, you shouldn't be confused or anything like that yeah, and I guess you could say, as a location, what they've been doing in the past is like it's like what? Maybe like a half a mile away from the disney parks itself? Um, distance wise, I mean from the point where you start in the first mile, that's still on anaheim technically, because of the way it takes you oh and fun fact.
Speaker 3:Um, the place where the start line is now is where the new parking lot is going to be.
Speaker 1:I was going to ask that.
Speaker 3:Right Yep.
Speaker 1:They just announced. It makes too much sense that that's one of the many reasons why Run Disney West Coast is going on hiatus for a while, and actually let's give credit where credit is due here. Congratulations, Jack, on correctly predicting where the Avatar area was going to go.
Speaker 4:Well, also fun fact, if you guys really think about it. They haven't said it yet at all, but I'm going to predict one more thing, okay, Greg, Is the fact that the Hollywood area will not close until after the race weekend.
Speaker 4:Well, that makes sense yeah, there's no way that they're going to close it before, because they always have a running route and they have to approve the route before, like way before um, the race happened. So I'm almost positive that we would still be running through the Hollywood area in Disney's California Adventure for the last time.
Speaker 1:So if you're going go on Mike and Sully's Adventure because it's going to close, I'll be interested to see if they bring any of the animatronics from that ride and then put them into the door coaster area. That ride and then put them into the door coaster area.
Speaker 3:Aww, that would make sense. That would keep them from having to recreate some things.
Speaker 1:Mm-hmm.
Speaker 3:Yeah. And our last question that we'll tackle for this episode comes from our friend Lindsay, and she asks Lindsay and she asks what marathon would you recommend for a back of the pack, first timer I mean, I would say the Walt Disney World marathon hands down.
Speaker 5:That's what I was gonna say. I don't know if she was asking specifically not run Disney related, but I think that that's one of the great things about Disney is that it welcomes back of the Packers.
Speaker 4:If you see a race that gives you a nice cushion too. If you're worried about time, that would be good, but also if they're giving you a nice cushion. Also, double check the elevation how hard the course is too.
Speaker 1:Oh really, Jack, you should check the elevation.
Speaker 4:Well, yeah.
Speaker 3:You should look at the course map.
Speaker 4:So one of my dream races is the Great Wall Marathon. They give you eight hours to complete it, but it's also one of the world's hardest marathons. I want to do that one too. If you want to go, just let me know.
Speaker 3:I think one of the important things to think about whenever you're choosing any kind of race a marathon, half marathon or even a 5K you need to do one that excites you. So when you think about the race where you're running, what you're going to be looking at, it doesn't matter if it's not Disney, if that doesn't excite you. If running New York excites you, do New York. If running in another country excites you or running in the countryside excites you, that's the one that you should do. It's really catered to what you want to be seeing.
Speaker 1:Lexi, that's a really, really good point. The recommendation that I am going to give now I give this as a caveat, or actually two caveats. The first is number one I've never run this race. And number two is is it's probably not the easiest marathon to get to, but my suggestion, outside of the walt disney world marathon, of course, would be the honolulu marathon. You go on their website and under their faqs it says they are the only marathon that allows all finishers to complete the race.
Speaker 1:I mean, I have heard of many, many friends who have talked about having seven, eight plus hour finishes, you know, during that particular race. So they probably have the most liberal you know, quote unquote time limit of any marathon. But again, you know, getting to Oahu, I understand, is not the cheapest thing in the world and, you know, is not the most accessible to some. But that's something to definitely keep on your radar.
Speaker 1:I know we have many, many friends in the Rise and Run community who actually use this race as their catered training run, whether they're doing just the marathon or goofy or dopey, because, again, you're getting the distance under your feet and you can take as long as you want. And all that being said, if you wanted to incorporate that race into your training this year. I know there's a couple of spots left, but definitely and I grant it, I think it's. I don't know if it's pinned on our Facebook page, but it's somewhere on our Facebook page the Galloway team is putting together a travel package for this year's Honolulu Marathon in December, because this is going to be Jeff Galloway's final marathon of his career. So if you're interested in running with a bunch of Galloway friends and Rise and Run friends and being able to take in this historic event for Jeff Galloway, it's something to definitely look into, that's for sure.
Speaker 2:The Walt Disney World Marathon is probably like a good starting point. You'll always find somebody in the back of the pack to run with you and help you complete this mission.
Speaker 1:Excellent, well gang. I think we correctly predicted. I think we had a ton of fun doing that right. Oh my gosh. Yes, this was so much fun. Excellent, well gang. I think we correctly predicted. I think we had a ton of fun doing that right.
Speaker 4:Oh my gosh. Yes, this is so much fun.
Speaker 1:And I know we didn't get to everyone's questions. So you know, if we're ever in a situation where, you know, I don't know, a guest cancels on us or something like that, we can definitely dip into more of these questions, because we still have plenty that we did not get the chance to answer. But to everyone who submitted, thank you very much. All right, well, we, before we move on to the race report, just got a couple of quick announcements here. Uh, the first is I know bob talked about this last week uh, in just a couple of short weeks, we are going to be celebrating episode 200 of the Rise and Run podcast and we want to feature you our awesome, awesome, our awesome, awesome listening community.
Speaker 1:So please call that hotline number and I'll read it off here again it is 727-266-2344. Dial that up, leave us a recorded message and we will be sure to play those all during episode 200. Next up on the docket uh, we have princess registration coming up in just a week and a half. If that is a race that you are interested in participating in, be sure to join our princess half marathon community chat over on facebook. I know there's a great dialogue already going on in that chat, but that's where everyone will congregate day of registration to make sure that as many friends as possible get into that particular run, disney race weekend and, like in the last couple of registrations um, when we'll double check with bob next week, but usually he also likes going live on zoom as well too. Uh, so that way people can chat about. You know, oh, I have a link that has this many minutes or something like that and it's you know, the last year or so these chats have been helping people very successfully get into these races. So again, if you're going to register on June 24th, definitely join that chat.
Speaker 1:Next, our buddy Emmy over at Pig Works in Cincinnati. It's on our Facebook page. But if you use that code, that will get you a 10% discount again, because I know they have a ton of races and a ton of challenges, so be sure to use that. But she also did go on to say that if you are a current or former member of our armed services, a first responder, a nurse or a teacher, send an email to registration at flying pig marathon dot com for an even greater discount. For an even greater discount.
Speaker 1:And, last but not least, our favorite Costco employee, gretchen, posted on our Facebook page the other day that she just wanted to give a reminder that the lottery and this is crazy, that there's a lottery for a virtual run, but that the lottery for the virtual option of the New York City Marathon in 2025 opens today, day of release, and closes on June 18th, and those names will be drawn on June 25th. So if you're selected for the virtual option in 2025, and as long as you run the 26.2 and provide New York Roadrunners the proof that you did the distance, that will get you a guaranteed bib to run the race in person in 2026. If you are a member of the New York Roadrunners, it is $175 for the virtual option, or if you are a non-member, it is $200. It seems like in reading the comments of the Facebook post that I guess they really bury this information on their website. So that's why Gretchen just wanted to highlight for everyone, in case you're interested in going for a Abbott world major in New York city.
Speaker 2:And also that $200 is just for that race. You still have to pay the registration fee for next year and 2026.
Speaker 1:Very, very good point. All right, and then, coming up on next week's episode, we have a really, really special episode for you. Miss dopey herself is back. Brittany Charbonneau will be on the podcast. We are also secretly hoping that baby Hugo will also be making an appearance on camera. So it'd be so great to be able to chat with Brittany and see what she has been up to and and what her, what her journey into motherhood has been like as well too. So we're really looking forward to that one. And now it's time for the race report. The race report is sponsored by our wonderful friend Thomas Stokes over at stoked metabolic training. Stokesfit slash, rise and run coaching is the website, and in just a couple of weeks uh, as tom mentioned a couple of weeks ago he'll be starting his next eight-week challenge. That will begin on july 7th and if you are one of the first 20 Rise and Runners to register, you will get a free one-on-one call with Tom. And again, if you are interested in that particular challenge, the cost is $47. Again, stokesfit, slash riseandruncoaching.
Speaker 4:And it's not a bad deal, you guys not a bad deal at all for two months worth of training.
Speaker 1:Not too shabby. All right, we start the race report on Wednesday, which was actually global running day. Did everyone get out for for a run on global running day?
Speaker 4:Unknowingly, that tracks. Jack, that definitely tracks. I know I went for a walk on global running day, unknowingly.
Speaker 1:No, like that tracks, jack, that definitely tracks. I know I went for a walk on global running day, so I I hope that counts. But but uh, dylan went out and she ran the big run 5k in north augusta, south carolina. Now, moving to the weekend, on sat Kalo ran the Corona Del Mar Scenic 5K in Newport Beach, orange County, california. Then, moving back over to the other coast, ileana and Steven ran the Lake Norman Forest Run Half Marathon in Lake Norman, north Carolina. Ileana stayed with Steven up until mile 10, but then she let him go and she kept her pace as he went ahead, but she came away with a POT with one minute to spare. Way to go Ileana Steven. On the other hand, he went into this race a little bit better prepared than he did last year and let me tell you it really paid off because he got a 54-minute course PR and a 17-minute distance PR.
Speaker 3:Wow, nice. That's great Way to go, steven.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we were just talking about the New York City virtual option, but this past weekend was the New York Roadrunners MasterCard New York Mini 10K. This is the 53rd running of the race and what's really cool I think we talked about this last year, maybe two years ago, that this was the uh, the first ever women's only race, um, which I think is really, really cool. We had a couple of rising runners there, uh, the first was jen. Uh, she said one day she will run in a new york road runners race that is not either extremely cold or humid. She pr'd in sweat, glitter and glam the best kind of PR. Crowd support at the end carried her through and she loved that. The announcer shouted out her glitter and her sparkle as she crossed the finish line.
Speaker 1:Danielle was there Also. Grace was there. She says this is one of her favorite races of the year, but she never really races this one between the heat, the humidity, the time of year, hills of central park, uh, and it's a pretty crowded course. But as long as she's in the city and physically able, she will always run it. And our last runner was courtney. She said even with all the heat and humidity, she got a PR.
Speaker 2:Play that monorail bell, greg.
Speaker 1:Yes, can we talk about that for a second? The fact that we had a whole post on our Facebook page this week that the number of listeners that did not realize that the PR bell is the monorail ding dong.
Speaker 4:Wait, really.
Speaker 1:Absolutely blew my mind. Yes.
Speaker 4:Yes.
Speaker 1:I can't unhear it all right, but wait, jack colon, is your reaction to the fact that so many people didn't know, or were you also learning for the first time? No, I knew. No, I knew.
Speaker 4:Okay, it's just to me, I guess I it's such an iconic sound, but I guess I can understand why they.
Speaker 1:I can understand where they're coming from, though yeah, okay, all right, we now move down to a special place that near and dear to all run disney runners, orlando, florida, for the ninth annual community uh rainbow run, and this is an event that is run in honor of the absolutely tragic events that happened at the Pulse nightclub mass shooting several years ago. Jessica ran this race. She said, even though it is an untimed charity run, she is pretty sure that she beat her time from last year, which is pretty cool. Christian was also there. He felt a sense of love, community and belonging. And Tracy was also there. She said it was hot but not unbearable. She loved running through the bubbles and she channeled her inner Aaron by petting all of the dogs that were on the course, who were also incredibly dressed up for the occasion. Pretty darn cool In Wentworth, nova Scotia.
Speaker 1:It was a weekend in Wentworth and one of my customized buddies, laurie, was at this race. She originally wanted to run the 100K that was part of this event. To run the 100k that was part of this event, but due to a family wedding, uh, she only had the time, um, to finish six loops of the four and a half kilometer course. Uh, but don't worry, because uh, laurie is a stickler, uh, when it comes to her training. She did the 100k the previous weekend. Uh, in order to make up for it, way to go. Laurie jake ran the old port half marathon and 5k in portland, maine. Jake said that it was raining for the first mile but thankfully it then did stop. Uh, he ran the twilight 5k race in boston, boston, on Thursday night but had to drop because of the 91 degree heat really made him sick, so he was nervous about starting out this one, but was very proud of a 227.53 finish. Jake, even with all that, that's still good enough for Disney POT. Way to go. That's still good enough for Disney POT. Way to go.
Speaker 1:Next up we have the Parklands and the WLKY 5K in Louisville, kentucky. Sarah ran this race with her six-year-old son, which was his first 5K, so we know what that means and what should come as no surprise to anybody. He is now asking about when he can run his first run Disney race. So way to go, sarah and son. Moving up to John's home state in Medford, new Jersey, was the Johnson's Farm 5K. Sarah was at this race and this is Sarah's first race. Report was a challenging run through the trails of a farm that she used to visit as a kid. She ended up helping pace a runner who she realized once they were running a 30, 30 intervals. That's when she decided to offer to help and pace. So way to go, sarah.
Speaker 2:In bonus Aries, argentina, the Ultra Marathon, zarte, 6 Hours. Our friend JJ ran that. This became a goal race for JJ after a DNF in his last Ultra and he's happy to say he finished the race with a new PR of 68.7 kilometers or 42.7 miles in 6 hours and as an extra bonus, he ended up winning the race.
Speaker 1:Like he said in his post.
Speaker 2:He turns lemons into lemonade.
Speaker 1:Way to go.
Speaker 2:JJ, that's amazing God.
Speaker 1:He is such a great runner. Way to go, he's fast.
Speaker 1:Next up in the villages in Florida was the big run 2025 fleet fee, and Brooke was there Heading back up to New Jersey. In Morristown, new Jersey, was the Scott Coffee Morristown Rotary 8K. Our Camden County runner himself, jack Witzig, was there. Stain in the Garden State, the AC Bungalow Beach Boardwalk 5-Miler. Pete ran this. He came away with two PRs at the 5K and 5-mile distance and he says he really enjoyed running on the boardwalk at AC In Atlanta. Indiana Never knew that there was an Atlanta in Indiana.
Speaker 1:Callie ran the BEX 5K. She says it was a little race with a few hundred people that managed to raise over $52,000 for their five chosen charities. She ended up walking when she got there and saw that it was dog-friendly and she wanted to stay in the back of the pack to see all the dogs. Not a bad way to tackle that race. Way to go. In Potterville, michigan, this folks wins the award for the best race name of the weekend and I'm going to make sure that I enunciate this one clearly so we don't get an explicit rating.
Speaker 1:A. Another clucking five K uh, sean ran this. He said it was a great race where he got the chance to run at some point during the race with every single person that he came with, uh, to the event. That is pretty darn cool way to to clucking go, sean Riley. I'm going to apologize in the event that I butcher this one, but Riley ran the Chillicothe half marathon in hopefully Chillicothe, Ohio. This was Riley's fourth half marathon, but her first non-run Disney half. Overall. She said that the race hurt because of the 95% humidity, unexpected hills and only five total water stops Not cool. Dealing with all of that, though, she got a half-marathon PR and she credits it all to wearing her Rise and Run visor. Way to go, riley. Next up in the Lone Star State in Houston, texas, our buddy Brandy ran the Lemonade Dash and she credits all of the holler hypes that she got during the race for saving her on a warm run where she earned the tiniest medal.
Speaker 1:I saw the photo of this. It was very, very cute. It was. Saw the photo of this. It was very, very cute. It was about the size of a disney pin whoa yeah uh, she saw, uh, her friends jennifer and audra at the race, who also convinced her to sign up for a princess in two weeks. So I'm very happy to hear this because for once, brandy is going to be making a run disney decision. That is not my fault, it's these other ladies fault now in asheville, north carolina.
Speaker 5:Jimmy was there. He ran the flying squirrel 10 miler. Despite as much of training as I gave him. He said no amount of training would have prepared him for this race. With over a thousand feet of elevation in the first five miles it was super, super difficult. But once he got to the top he said that the views were amazing. He did send me pictures and they were absolutely amazing and he came away with a four minute PR. Congratulations, Jimmy.
Speaker 1:You know, alicia, when I was reading this race report I was like boy, he is going to get in trouble with Alicia. I almost sent him a message. I was like are you sure you don't want to adapt the words that you chose for your race reports? You?
Speaker 2:can lead a horse to order, but you can't make it drink.
Speaker 1:Touche.
Speaker 2:Jimmy, you're not a horse, Jimmy, okay.
Speaker 1:All right. Next up we have the Capital City Pride Stride 5K in Des Moines, iowa. Angela and Alex ran this. The race featured a lot of dogs who were dressed up for a pageant show at the end of the event and they got a very cool unicorn medal. We now move over to Mackinac Island, michigan, for the Lilac Festival Run and Walk.
Speaker 1:Christina ran the 10K as part of this weekend. She would recommend this race despite the fact of not seeing any lilacs on the course. How can you have a lilac festival and not have a race that has no lilacs? I don't understand it. It did include great views, though, of Lake Huron, lots of bugs and their very own version of road apples. Apparently, cars aren't allowed on the island, so I guess everyone gets around on horse and bikes and stuff like that. So that's why they have their Michigan version of road apples. I guess. In Plymouth, north Carolina, helen ran the Run with the Bears. I mean, I don't know about you guys. That sounds like a really dangerous race. Like why would they allow bears and runners out on the same course?
Speaker 5:Right.
Speaker 1:It sounds like a huge liability. Maybe it's not your average bear.
Speaker 5:Hey yo, boo-boo, I was just going to say maybe it's Yogi Bear and they're going to come and have a picnic with you.
Speaker 2:Oh.
Speaker 1:Yogi picnic with you. Oh, yogi anyway. Uh, helen goes on to say that this was, uh, her first ever non-run disney race on a flat course through a small historic town and I gotta say it did have no great. There were no bears on the course, um, but it did have an epic inflatable bear finish line, which looked really, really cool. All right, here's another town name that I'm probably going to butcher. So, uh, amy, I apologize in advance. In okona, milwauk, wisconsin, we had the yellow brick road 5k. Amy goes on to say that this was a awesome wizard of oz themed race where not only did she get a PR but she also got first in her age group and, like I say, looking at the pictures for a 5K, this had more theming and decorations than that Monopoly run that we had talked about both in Orlando and Atlantic City. So, monopoly run, step up your game.
Speaker 2:In Fort Smith, arkansas, where I get my personal race report from Joe every week. My buddy Joe ran that he says the three amigos are back Too many 70 year olds in this race for Joe to place. But he says that's kind of a good thing, everyone's staying active. But amigos Johnny got first and Gary got third. Way to go, joe, I know you're doing good out there.
Speaker 1:Excellent work, amigos. In Baltimore, maryland, it was the Baltimore 10 miler. Our buddy Tara was there. She wants to thank everyone for all of the holler hypes, as this was her first time actually going live on the app. For all of the holler hypes, as this was her first time actually going live on the app. She's also very thankful, uh, for the rain that did push through, since it was warm and muggy. But, uh, what was really neat is she got the cutest little turtle medal, um, as part of this race, since, uh, the terrapin is a big staple in maryland. And stacy was also there, even though I think she pulled Jack here, even though she lives in Baltimore, she somehow forgot about the hills. After completing this race, she officially completed the three race big freaking deal challenge with a medal that was about the size of something you get at Space Coast. It was a quite large medal. Way to go, stacey.
Speaker 1:Next up, we had the Run the Quay 10K in Fuquay. Verena, north Carolina. Beth was there. She got a PR on the hottest day of the year but was thankful for the local church that was handing out popsicles during the run. Way to go, beth. We have the hometown half in Dallas, texas, where Danielle ran this race and she said she's glad to be racing again and earned a very cool medal. That was very run Disney inspired because it had a spinner in the middle of it. Way to go, danielle. And rounding out Saturday, also staying in Texas, in San Antonio, was the San Antonio Global Running Day 5K. Joseph ran. He said it was hot and humid but got it done and, oddly enough, even though the course was long by over a quarter of a mile, he's still got third place in his age group.
Speaker 1:All right, moving on to our only big weekend event on the race report, and that was a race that is put on by we had them on a couple of months ago our friends over at Vacation Races. This weekend was the Grand Teton Half Marathon in 5K in Wilson, wyoming, and I believe this is a run that Alexi has done herself. We had a bunch of rising runners there doing the Moose Double, which is the half marathon in the 5K. Our friend Mary was there. She said this was state number 10 in her quest to get all 50. During the 5K she thought that the race organizers were trying to kill her because over half the race was uphill on a mountain in some moderate technical coursing, so during the half her legs were quite heavy but she was able to help pace someone to their first half marathon.
Speaker 1:I think that's one of my favorite things that I love seeing in the race report is the number of people that are willing to help out others, especially first timers, on the course. I think that really goes to show what an incredible community that we do have here at Rise and Run. Brandy also ran the Moose Double. Ellie also was here this weekend but just ran the half marathon. They said that they love this vacation races event and, as someone from Texas, they made sure to take time to soak in all of the sights of the mountains. Way to go, everyone out in Wyoming. Moving to Sunday, once again we head back to the Garden State, the great state of New Jersey. You got it. This guy that I know named John, ran the Fitzgerald 5K Lager Run and we're so thrilled to have John here on the podcast to give us a live race report. Uh, john, welcome to welcome to rise and run first time on the podcast guys.
Speaker 1:This is great first time long time yes, I'm excited, yeah.
Speaker 2:So, uh, this race ran on a sunday night. Uh, it runs on where I run my training runs usually. So I figured if I'm going to run Sunday on that street, I'll just sign up for the race, which I've done in the past. It's a nice little race. It starts, it's got a I don't say, I don't say little, just about a thousand people run the 5k, which seems like a lot for this, for a 5 K in my area, but it's, it was a fun race. Uh, starts out this, this, this, this loop.
Speaker 2:But the good thing about this race is that it's I run this race backwards, let's say, because usually I'm running in the opposite directions of this, of this, of this race when I do my training run. So it seems like a whole new training run because I've it looks totally familiar coming from the opposite directions. I had a good time. It, you know, did my my time. Um, I did my 30 thirties, had a good time, was happy with what, my my pace. After the race, philly uh, pretzel Factory, pretzels Only problem, a little cold, but you know they were still good.
Speaker 1:Is that a violation, though, to have Philadelphia pretzels in New Jersey, especially northern Jersey?
Speaker 2:No, there's a couple of them up by May now.
Speaker 1:Oh, okay. Yeah, I mean I know you can franchise them out, but I don't know I mean New York's got their own pretzels. I mean I know it's not New Jersey pretzels that are New York pretzels, but I like the Philly pretzels.
Speaker 2:I mean you know, but still, like I said before, you got to get the charcoal and the on top of the heat and much of that charcoal taste. But yeah, pretzels afterwards, beer, watermelon. It was a nice little race. I mean it was fun. So I'm happy about it and hopefully use it as my training run for this week.
Speaker 1:Did they have any watermelon beer?
Speaker 2:No, it was just a light lager. That was the beer.
Speaker 1:Oh, okay, a.
Speaker 2:Wilkin Brewery Company. It was nice, I mean All right.
Speaker 1:Well, john, I have a recommendation for you If you ever want to mix the two of those together. My favorite watermelon beer is 21st Amendment Brewing. They're based out of San Francisco. It's called Heller High Water. Very, very good. You should give it a try.
Speaker 2:Heller High Water Okay.
Speaker 1:Yeah Well, great job, john. We're really proud of you and we can't wait to hear about your runs in the future. We're now going to go across the pond to the person who gave us our intro for this week. Heather ran the South End Half Marathon in Essex, united Kingdom, which is about an hour outside of London. With Heather running late, that resulted in her leaving her breakfast in the fridge, but she did a dead last start which helped her bump into an old friend who was volunteering at the finish. The route is a double out and back loop by run, walk, running, running. She. Uh, it was amazing for her as she found herself passing other people while she was keeping, uh, keeping her intervals pretty even way to go, heather.
Speaker 1:We head now to the windy city, chicago, illinois, for the run for the zoo, lincoln park zoo. Laura was at this race. She completed as a fun run. Uh, and you know, I guess you could call this one run disney adjacent because it did have a character stop at the end where you could get a photo with the panda express panda in one of my favorite cities. Uh, to visit charlottesville, virginia, david ran the bruce barnes mile, he said, despite a steady rain and feeling burnout around the second half mile. He got second in his age group and this was his first ever one mile race, so that's a pr.
Speaker 1:Moving on to provincetown, mass Massachusetts, we had the Feet Over Front Street 5K Pride Run and Walk. Our friend Beth was there. Beth says that this was a small, local and well-run race that ran through the downtown and the pier, with a delicious brunch at the end. Beth and her fiancé Diane tied for third place women overall. Way to go, and they were able to connect with some other Run Disney runners because she was wearing her rainbow tutu for the event. Way to go, beth, and I know I mentioned it last week. But happy pride to all of those in just an absolute amazing community.
Speaker 1:So I hope you're having the best pride month ever happy pride wrapping up, sunday in seattle, washington, we had the great ferry race half marathon. Vanessa ran that this was her first trail run at the half marathon distance. Uh, and she definitely has some learning to do. Runners have the option to meet up in Seattle and then ferry over to Bainbridge Island to start. The race Starts by running off of the ferry up an incline. She goes on to say that there were gorgeous trails. Of course you know the course was very hilly. Not much support as it was a coupless race, but she just wanted to finish. Not much support as it was a coupless race but she just wanted to finish and she did in about two hours and 45 minutes, but she said it felt like four hours. But, vanessa, way to go.
Speaker 1:And then our last race for this week's race report happened on Monday. Megan ran the five Miller at Heckler State Park in Islip, new York Park in Islip, new York. Megan went on to say that Monday night began the New York State Parks Summer Run Series on Long Island, which she's excited is back for its third year. This is a race series that hosts a race on each Monday night during the summer at a different state park with a wide variety of distances. The series has snacks, ice cream, beer available for all the runners, and she just loves these races and is looking forward to more. So congratulations, megan, in all of our runners in this week's race report. All right, folks.
Speaker 1:Well, that's going to do it for episode 194 of the Rise and Run podcast. We really hope you enjoyed getting our thoughts on a bunch of listener questions that ranged for anywhere from our favorite ice cream to where we like to tinkle while we go on a race, especially in unique situations. As always, thank you so much for the support that you give us here on the podcast because, as we say each and every week, if you run, you are our friend. Run disney season will be here before we know. We have race registrations coming up.
Speaker 1:We got dopey, goofy marathon weekend training coming up very soon. It's gonna be a very, very exciting time here on podcast and we really look forward to be part of your journey, regardless of whatever race or whatever distance you are participating in. Keep up the hard work, put one foot in front of the other and until we meet again, happy running.
