Speaker 1:

3 am again. Why did I ever think this was a good idea? Welcome to the Rise and Run podcast. Join our group of Run Disney friends. As we talk about running at Walt Disney World and beyond. We'll discuss recent runs, training, upcoming races and surprise topics suggested by you, our listeners. Well, the alarm's gone off, so let's go. Good morning running family.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to another episode of the Rise and Run podcast.

Speaker 4:

This is the Oglebay Clan from Tyler Texas. Whatever you're training for, we hope it's going well, Happy running.

Speaker 6:

That's the Ogilvys with our intro for episode 155 of the Rise and Run podcast. Thank you, jessica. Kevin, I heard I know I heard at least one and maybe two more voices in there that I'm sorry I couldn't identify, but I think perhaps some future run Disney runners involved in that intro also. But thanks so much for that. Welcome friends. Welcome to episode 155. We're glad you're here. Lots to talk about this week, we'll get to that in a moment. I'm Bob, I am here with John, with john hey, how you doing. With greg hey, hey, hey. And with alicia hello friends. In this week's episode some rates all right. So here's the thing.

Speaker 1:

Oh, when did? When did pelkey show up in this episode?

Speaker 6:

Unfortunately. Yeah, a little homage to our friend John there, and if you know those code words, that's what John says when they send him out onto the stage and he has to make an unpopular announcement Because the big deal is run Disney's back. We had, and I will give you a very short synopsis we had a wonderful weekend at Disneyland. Those of you who expressed problems with the one that occurred in January, I'm sure they were genuine and I heard a lot of folks say I ain't going back till I hear things are fixed. They're fixed and we had a great recording explaining everything and how wonderful the weekend was.

Speaker 6:

But we had some technical issues with the internet connection here in Florida and although we thought we were recording a recap of the Disneyland weekend, it turns out what we have is not usable. We do, however, we do have a great recap of the wonderful Bird in Hand weekend in Bird in Hand, pennsylvania. We'll have that for you this week. Of the wonderful bird in hand weekend in burden hand, pennsylvania. We'll have that for you this week and we'll do our level best to get that Disneyland recap to you as soon as we can.

Speaker 6:

The Rise and Run podcast is sponsored by our friends at Magic Bound Travel Got a chance to say hi to Brad and Maggie out in California this weekend Always good to see them. We'll have them back on the episode here in just a little bit. I asked how the response was to the Rise and Run cruise. If you haven't heard about this and it's quite possible you haven't head to the magicboundtravelcom page Up at the top, go all the way to the right, click on more, click on podcasts and then scroll down and you'll see a Rise and Run podcast cruise interest form. Brad told me that as of the time I met him, they had had over 100 forms sent to them. That's not a hundred people, that's more than a hundred forms people who were interested in bringing, if not just themselves, their family, who knows how many folks on the cruise. So I would say the only thing we're really waiting for before we can take the next step is for Run Disney to announce the race schedule for the next season, for the 25-26 season, because we only want to do this following the springtime surprise race in 2026. And I know it sounds like a long way off but everything we do sounds like a long way off until it gets there. Sounds like a long way off, but everything we do sounds like a long way off until it gets there. Also, that's available. You can go to the featured section on the Facebook group there's a link there for the cruise form or go to our site, riseandrunpodcastcom, and there's a link there. So, if you're interested, if you've already filled it out though we haven't forgotten, we are still excited and we're pretty sure that's going to be a go. Okay, friends, let's look at the training schedule. Well, the top line is gone, the one that used to say how much training there was for Halloween race weekend. The next line is wine and dine, and, friends, we're inside 50 days as of the day that this podcast released. We are seven weeks, or 49 days, away from Expo Day for Wine and Dine weekend, and I'm glad, because it was just so wonderful to see everybody at Disneyland. I'm excited to see even more of my friends at Wine and Dine.

Speaker 6:

Training week 11,. If you're running the half marathon, you've got three miles. If you're running the challenge, you've got four. On Saturday, each one of those includes a magic mile. So it's three including the magic mile, not three plus the magic mile, or four, depending on what you're doing. Marathon weekend 17, 17 weeks away. Training week 11. If you're running the marathon, it's four miles, if you're running the challenge, it's three. And no, I can't explain why that is, but it is and it works. Training for the Disneyland half marathon weekend in January of 25 will be starting soon. John. I think it's two weeks now. I think it's two weeks, I think, yeah, okay, so we're getting there. Friends, gang, anybody have any training-related stories for this week?

Speaker 7:

I do, bob. So this last weekend, when you guys were all doing your races, I had a 14-mile training run and I was about like four miles in and I was struggling a lot. I was just going to go to five and turn around and finish at 10 for the day and I was listening to an audiobook and it was talking about looking at the bigger pictures rather than what was right in front of you, looking at everything as a whole, and I started thinking about how okay, well, my body is not yelling at me Like I can keep putting one foot in front of the other. It was really a mindset thing and I started thinking about the bigger picture of how much better I'll feel this week if I were to finish the 14 miles that I had. And I looked at the bigger picture and I kept moving and after I hit about six miles, that run turned into one of the best runs that I've had in a really, really long time.

Speaker 7:

I felt fantastic and truly. I finished and I was like I could have gone to at least 20 miles. I felt so good. So I just want to remind our listeners gone to at least 20 miles, like I felt so good, so I just want to remind our listeners. Sometimes when you're in those modes as long as your body is not hurt it's okay to look at the bigger picture and keep moving one foot in front of the other, because you never know, it might be the best run you've had in a really long time.

Speaker 6:

Excellent point. Excellent point. I think that is key to our training and I'm glad it worked out for you. That's great, Alicia. Thanks.

Speaker 1:

That's really interesting that you say that Alicia talking big picture, because I know just a couple of weeks ago, bob, you eloquently spoke about Me, yeah yeah, yeah, you. You speak eloquently all the time. Okay, me, me, yeah, yeah, yeah you, you speak eloquently all the time. Okay, you know, you chatted about how, like you, know not to try and and think ahead too much, or your, or try not to get into the schedule, yep too deeply, um.

Speaker 1:

But at the same time, though, you know sometimes, when we do have a mindset like that, you know regardless if it's, you know, looking in the near term or the long term, you know sometimes we do need that, that fresh perspective.

Speaker 1:

So I think that's really sound advice and this actually came from an instagram post, um, from our former guest who we just had on a couple weeks ago, amanda, over at once upon a marathon.

Speaker 1:

She brought up a really good point this past week is that you know for I mean obviously, yes, with the way that the Galloway program works, you know, yes, you do alternate on the weekends in terms of really long run, and then you know, more manageable, you know five to, say, seven miles or something like that.

Speaker 1:

But if you think about we're in a really important part of stretch of our training and this is just focused on marathon weekend that when you do have those longer runs every other weekend, we're in the part of training now where you will be going a half marathon or greater distance, and so I think that's something that, in the short term, greater distance and I so I think that's something that, in the short term, you should mentally have yourself prepared for.

Speaker 1:

But then, looking at it from a long-term picture, I think this, this section of training, I think, is going to give everyone a lot of confidence, especially if you're training, say, for a fall half marathon or wine and dine. Is that the fact that you're going to be doing that distance or greater several times over the course of the next couple of weeks is going to be a real great confidence boost to get you to those distances in your races and then also give you the confidence to know that you can get over that next hump, you know, down the road as we get closer to the holidays when it's, you know, 20 miles or more. So real important stretch coming up here.

Speaker 6:

Greg, you're right that it's human nature to look ahead. You've got to take them into little pieces. I know that this weekend out in Disneyland doing the 10K and the half, I finished that half and I'll do this in January too, I will. I'll finish that half and I'll think do I have it in me to do that twice tomorrow? And right now the answer is probably no, but I'm not done the training yet and I've done the training multiple times and I know it works. So if these things are going through your head, recognize that I think you're normal. Either that or we're both weird, but I think you're normal and it's natural to do this. But keep in mind what Alicia said, keep in mind what Greg said and keep going. You've got this.

Speaker 1:

We definitely have this and I will say, you know, there is something you know that, regardless of however you think of this outlook, is that you know, deep down, we love to run.

Speaker 2:

And speaking of love, Speaking of love, disney's putting out the run Disney virtual love on the run 14 miler 2025 run. It's going to be run. It's supposed to be run between February 1st and February 28th, the month of February. Registration starts next Tuesday, so one week from this recording it's registration. It's basically three races you got a two miler, a five miler and a seven miler. It adds up to 14. And with this race you get three virtual races, an embroidered blanket, a theme magnet, four commemorative finisher medals, digital bibs and for certificate. So if you need some little extra motivation to get out there and run in February, you've got a virtual race if you want to do it. So, and hopefully this will start us with the new run Disney season calendar coming out after this. I hope so.

Speaker 6:

I hope so. Nicely done, guys. I got to admit, greg, you had me going for a second. I wasn't sure where you were heading with that one. I was trying. Nicely done, guys. I got to admit, greg, you had me going for a second.

Speaker 1:

I wasn't sure where you were heading with that one. I was trying.

Speaker 6:

Boy, john man, he was all over it.

Speaker 1:

I do have a question, though, about this virtual, and I know it's been a few weeks since it's been announced. There is a huge price disparity between this virtual run and the Christmas run.

Speaker 2:

Didn't you get like a what's that?

Speaker 7:

You got a corksicle cup and a sweatshirt. So I mean, maybe they're thinking that's valued higher than an embroidered blanket. But the metal-wise like it's still.

Speaker 2:

Still four metals.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, you're still getting four metals.

Speaker 6:

I don't know, you mean this one's less expensive?

Speaker 2:

Yes, the crispest one is $267.

Speaker 1:

And this one's like $180 something. Yeah, $180 something.

Speaker 2:

So yeah, I mean. I guess, maybe the medals are a little more expensive because they double as an ornament and the little. Mickey ears? I don't know, I haven't done them. I don't know if they're like 3D, where there's an actual Mickey head.

Speaker 1:

Oh, like the ones that they sell in the parks, because I buy those all the time for my Christmas tree. So if that's the case, then maybe that does make sense.

Speaker 7:

The medals were like flat bottom, but I don't think they're hollow, so it's like the half of a Mickey for the ornaments.

Speaker 2:

So it's not flat, it's, it's, yeah, it's like it's not a flat metal.

Speaker 1:

It's a 3d one, correct? Yes?

Speaker 7:

But it's not a full bulb. Mickey is what I was saying.

Speaker 2:

That's probably why it's a little more money, the metal.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, I would think the mold to to make those ones probably cost them more to make those ones probably cost them more.

Speaker 6:

I haven't done it yet. I will try to remember to start a chat group for the February virtual runs. I don't typically and correct me or help me if I'm wrong here. Registration for virtual is not like registration for live races, is it no? I think it used to be.

Speaker 2:

For the summer challenge? Yes, I think it used to be for the Summer Challenge. Yes, I think it was because you could do the three individuals or the challenge. But here it's an all or nothing deal and I know Christmas is still open.

Speaker 7:

So I do think that they could sell out, but it's not as likely as the actual in-person places.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, so the chat will be there If you want to use it on registration day. That's great. That's what it's there for Friends. Let's talk about the big event of the weekend. We know there were two, as we explained at the top, we only have the recording for one and, of course, that's the wonderful event out in central Pennsylvania Burden Hand Half Marathon Weekend. It's a great one Joining us to talk about it. Well, let's start with the folks who you've heard from already. John was there, hey, how you doing. And Greg was there Welcome. Ah, that's with a K. Yes, with a K, but also joining us, and thank you so much for sharing your time with us. Allie, without an E. Hi guys. Laura Ann, hello, rob, how are you? No question, I ask the questions, rob. Steve, steve, hello. And Lizzie.

Speaker 6:

Hi Thanks, guys, and if you're not prepared for that kind of stuff, relax. It's going to go on the rest of the evening, okay, all right, hey, this is a fun, fun race. It's a great weekend. I want to uh hush and let you talk about it. Let's uh start out with and, and you can raise your hand on this one. I can see you. I know nobody can hear you raising your hand. Who got there? Who got there Friday? Who got there before the? Okay? So, laura and uh, it looks like it looks like all of our guests got there friday. Did you participate in the, the dinner on friday? Uh, how was that? That's always fun, lizzie. How was that?

Speaker 5:

I'm gonna be honest, I was really nervous about going to the dinner because I feel like most of the folks I know like kind of from this community are in Florida, since I just moved to Pennsylvania. But I walked up and I was in a Marathon Weekend t-shirt and someone at its table pointed at me and was like it's one of us, I love that. And then I sat across from Allie and we just kind of got chatting. It was like us and Eva and Diana and I felt like immediately felt really welcome. The food, of course, was amazing.

Speaker 6:

I think that's a theme for Bird in Hand is the food is just amazing. Come for the race, stay for the food right.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, but it was just so nice. It was like there was a whole big, big table of like 10 to 15 rise and runners, just like ready to get into it.

Speaker 8:

We actually came in Thursday. I flew up with a friend of mine and I think we were the first ones there because we were just sitting outside enjoying the weather. It was absolutely beautiful. The food was really, really good and we just staked out a table and every time I saw a Rise and Run shirt I just waved people down to come see us.

Speaker 6:

Good for you, good for you.

Speaker 1:

You know, I will say you know, having done this race now four years in a row. When you compare the pizza and pasta party to what we'll talk about later, I actually kind of find it a little pedestrian, okay but. But at the same time though, it's not all that expensive to to add on to your registration so you don't have to worry about what am I going to do for for dinner that night. And the fact that you can still get the soft serve and the cake and the shoofly pie and all that jazz for dessert isn't a half bad thing. But when you compare the two meals, they are in stark contrast to one another.

Speaker 7:

So also on Friday was the 5K, is that correct?

Speaker 6:

Yes.

Speaker 7:

I know, allie, you did the 5K. How did the 5K go for you, oh?

Speaker 3:

it was great. I ran with lizzie. Um, again, like lizzie mentioned earlier, we had never met before, but we started chatting at dinner and we both needed somebody to run with, so we ran together. Um, I'm kind of used to the hills. Uh, I'm only 20 minutes down the road, so the 5k wasn't quite as shocking to me as I think maybe it was to Lizzie, but we found the camels and the miles flew by. It's always fun when you have somebody to run with Laura Ann.

Speaker 7:

How did it go for you?

Speaker 8:

I was not ready for those hills. Either day I'll be honest we don't have hills in Florida. The closest I get is the Skyway race, so I walked most of it to save my legs for Saturday, but it was beautiful. We just stopped and took pictures and everything was a picture. I still haven't downloaded all of them, but yeah, there's so many beautiful pictures. It's one of the most picturesque races I've ever done.

Speaker 7:

Rob, do you have anything to add about the 5K?

Speaker 9:

Just what Lorianne and Lizzie were saying. It's such a beautiful part of the country and I went to college down there and I travel down that way for work, so it's just the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, I call it. It's just wonderful and the weather was perfect. When you talk about what we had, a group chat going during the week and the weather forecast going into the week was not fantastic and it just got better and better and better every day and by the time we got to Friday night it could not have been a better environment. And you know they talked about having the dinner and being able to sit down and meet people that you only hear on the radio or the podcast excuse me in some cases or see on the Facebook page and get to meet them in person and talk. It was just, it really was. It was community, which is what you know.

Speaker 9:

When Greg talked about how good the weekend was, that was one of the things he always talked about and it really, you really understand that sense of community with that Friday night dinner and then from the dinner you go to the run, which is unusual, but you know it was, it was, it was really neat, it was really neat.

Speaker 6:

You pretty much get up from the table and go run. The kids ran, it was really neat. It was really neat.

Speaker 9:

You pretty much get up from the table and go run. Yeah, the kids ran and then they said, okay, everybody else, let's go yeah. And 500 people got up and got in line and ran 3.1 miles.

Speaker 2:

I didn't do the dinner. I didn't know what time I was getting down there, but I did get down so I got the pretzel with. Pretzel wrapped with ham and cheese was out of this world so if you don't like the pizza and pasta. They have pretzels, wrapped food plus lemonade and other fun things to eat.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

But did anybody do the s'mores afterwards? Oh, they had those set up. Huh, that s'mores set up while we were leaving. They had like a big open pit with uh giving the big stick to do your s'mores. We just want we were going to get to the room, so we didn't stop for them.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, I think they usually try to line that up with the end of the 5k so then that way people can just like mosey right on over as they get out the the finisher shoopies. I don't think they usually start down until like 7 30 at night and it goes till 9. So if you really think about you think disney's got a long expo on the first day. The bird in hand expo opens at 11 am and it doesn't close until 9, so it's it's impressively long.

Speaker 6:

It is In fairness, it's a tent right. Yes a tent Correct, but hey, look for the race that it is. It's a fine expo, a little shopping, some neat things. Yeah, yeah, I don't mean to run it down, it's a cool thing. Weather was good. Where did you all stay? Any place special that you stayed? I stayed across the street the time I went.

Speaker 3:

I Any place special that you stayed. I stayed across the street the time I went.

Speaker 6:

I got to stay at home for once. Ah, there you go.

Speaker 3:

It was fabulous. I haven't had a race weekend where I got to stay at home in a really long time.

Speaker 6:

How were the accommodations? Would you recommend them?

Speaker 3:

I don't know, I don't recommend them. I don't want guests. No offense, but Joe and I are ones to host.

Speaker 6:

So no I don't recommend them.

Speaker 3:

One star do not stay. But it was so nice, so only have a half an hour drive to the race, start and sleep at home instead of a hotel room is the place across the street still there, the hotel?

Speaker 6:

yep, okay, I thought I had heard.

Speaker 1:

Maybe something had happened to it or something I think, well, there there were like chain link fences up, I think, and somebody mentioned it in the chat, like many months ago yeah, I think there was a fire at some point I just don't know where exactly the fire took place, though I think the restaurant, I think the restaurant was on fire because that was someplace else I saw in front of it, and I guess the front check-in area was all under construction.

Speaker 2:

So I don't know if that was part of it too.

Speaker 6:

That was actually quite nice, but you've got to reserve that really early.

Speaker 2:

And that's a two-night stay too if you're going to go down. So you have to do a two-night stay there.

Speaker 6:

Okay, I was just curious. That was a memory I had that I enjoyed.

Speaker 2:

I popped over at the Wyndham right across from Dutch Wonderland, which was all of like five minutes to the hour.

Speaker 1:

Oh yes, the running joke that we had is that next year we're going to make this more of like a run Disney type race, where we're all going to run the half, eat and then go rope drop Dutch Wonderland, because nothing would look creepier than a bunch of grown adults showing up to an amusement park that is designed for toddlers and small children. Well, why not? But they have a monorail though.

Speaker 5:

I definitely took on the Disney energy. I steamed at the Steamboat Hotel. Okay, it looks like a boat, it looks like an old-fashioned steamboat and when you walk in it literally is decorated like you're walking into the Titanic and I was like, oh God, the ship is going down. A little frightening. I also was the only person under the age of, I think, 65, there, which was another experience. There was definitely like a tour bus.

Speaker 6:

You said it like it's a bad thing, Lizzie.

Speaker 5:

Well, you know, I was at the pool and they all kept looking at me like I was out of place and I was like no, I'm just here for the run. Um, but it was a really it kind of felt like going to disney because I was. It was very themed. So maybe if the rise and run cruise doesn't work out, we can do a steamboat hotel cruise oh, we mentioned that earlier in the podcast tonight that that's going on.

Speaker 7:

All right, so we have talked about the pre-race meals in the 5K. Let's get into the half marathon that everybody did on Saturday. Steve, do you want to tell us a little bit about the event itself and the kind of? I mean we've talked about the picturesque Pennsylvania scenery, but the type of areas you run through and any highlights of the event that you had.

Speaker 4:

So this is my second half marathon. All the things that everybody was talking about, the 5K, the dinner I took part in last year. This year we got down Friday evening, we got to visit everybody. Everybody didn't take part. Pretty much was focused on saturday for me, um. So one of my highlights, one of the reasons I was actually I didn't say the only reason running, but for me, um, this was my second event in lancaster county this year, so my focus was going to be on Saturday. I completed the Garden Spot Half Marathon back in the spring and by completing you said Garden Spot along with Bird in Hand, it would help me earn the Road Apple Award, the coveted Road Apple.

Speaker 4:

Award, the ever coveted and, of course, yes, unique. Everybody can see it or hear it on the podcast, I know.

Speaker 6:

Hold it up to the mic so we can hear it.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, yeah, it's like it's like the rice Krispies and snap crackles and pops.

Speaker 6:

Hey in all seriousness before you go on. That's a great looking award, steve. I hope you pop a photo of it on the face.

Speaker 1:

No, steve, pop a photo that someone took of you almost kissing your award at the end of the race. So if you, if that is not an indication of how coveted and special this thing is, that that's going to create a special photo that does exist somewhere.

Speaker 4:

I'm sure I actually I know I can find that fairly quickly, um, but yeah. So my goal um was just to complete the race. I'm also training for some other things. I kind of thought maybe I'll take it step up, but I really just wanted to take it easy. I'm with Customized Coach Twiggs. I'm training for a marathon. I've got 26 miles this coming Saturday. I wasn't really looking to push it.

Speaker 4:

For me, one of the rising runners, diana also another Customized, customized runner, was looking for somebody to pace, trying to come in around two 30. Um, I did try to overdo it last year so I was definitely willing to stay back. So for me, one of the highlights, I think, of this race is the fact you'll hear a lot is community Um. So to be able to help one of our own community uh and as well as our customized community um wasn't a neat chance for me. So I ran with Diana. I was supposed to pace her. There was a lot of times I had to catch up to her, which was fun, but later on in the race and I had shared this with some others I just have a regimen.

Speaker 4:

I keep my electrolytes going every 30 minutes. I'm eating my goos. I stick to that. Uh, she was doing fine but she just was having calf pain around mile 10 and and she started to say all my calves really bothered me before I could offer a salt shoe she said that at least three people within earshot said I have a goo, I have a electrolyte, I have this.

Speaker 4:

So, within the running community, I mean it was an amazing to see, but the weather was beautiful. This was my second year running this event. I was more prepared for the hills this year. Last year I went in with Nate and Dave you know Dave, george's dad, ready to break a sub two, oh that.

Speaker 6:

Dave Okay.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, that Dave, ready to break a sub two, and it was even a Greg, I think, said last year you guys might want to temp your expectations. You know this is not that easy of a PR course and of course we all know the weather. Last year I don't know if I was up to it this year. If I could have, maybe the weather was definitely for it, but I really didn't want to do that. But I was more prepared for the hills. I mean, I run the hills but I knew the course better from Bird in Hand plus Garden Spot there's some similar hills. I loved it.

Speaker 4:

I left that race feeling great. Just, I felt like I had to slow myself down a little bit to kind of help pace. I wasn't sore, I wasn't exhausted and I got to a point when I realized where I ran out of gas last year and it was fairly early, it was before the turnaround, right around about 4 or 5, something like that. So I had a great race race itself and I know we'll talk about some of the other events too, but just getting to meet some new, new people, rising runners, a lot of customized people I'm new to customize, so it's cool to meet some customized people as well.

Speaker 6:

But no, it went really great for me Outstanding. So listen, we're into talking about the race. We are glad you're all here. Why don't you? I'm sure others have things I'd like to add. I'm going to call on Rob.

Speaker 9:

We talked about this at the dinner, at the litter after the race. The community was just spectacular. The the you know we always talk about. What kind of what kind of support is there? It seemed like everybody, every member of the Amish community from Lancaster County, was on the race course. Multi-generational families.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 9:

Journey on. You know little kids at the water stops. There was one I mentioned. There was one again multi-generational family that they had parked their horses on the street. They were sitting across the street, grandma down to the littlest kid, and the little boy had brought his pony.

Speaker 9:

And they were all watching and he's holding the pony and I thought I have to stop and see these people. I didn't, but you wanna stop and say hello and talk to them? The other one there was one water stop where it looked like some siblings the younger ones were in front watching and handing out water and what looked like sort of a teenager young teenager she was mowing the lawn while while all this was going on. So they just they're still working, you know, but they take a moment to stop and and see all these crazy people running by.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, I think it's a highlight for that community and no doubt about it. I mean they they clearly enjoy participating. It's great stuff.

Speaker 1:

You know, and Bob, and speaking of the participation, you know, what's great about the community is that there is participation on so many levels, whether it, you know and when I mean this I mean this from the Amish community itself whether it's spectating, whether it's, you know, volunteering in terms of, you know, passing out water or Gatorade or working the post-race picnic. You know, there's even some that are part of the um, the fire company and the emt squad that's there. But then they also there are some that act as pacers, including our, you know, official um lead pacer of a horse and buggy um, so obviously, you know, someone's got to operate that. And then there's even people who, you know, do run this race just for the heck of it. I think we see a more um in terms of the 5k, but there are participants, you know, in the half marathon as well too. So, you know they, they really do come out in in spades, um, you know, in terms of participation across the entire board.

Speaker 7:

So you kind of brought up a point that I've been wondering about. Greg, with the horse and buggies that are around that area, do you have to run around little pies in the road while you're racing, or do they go and clean those up? Well, I know you got ones. Do they pick it up and put it on your award?

Speaker 4:

They do actually, do they pick it up and put it on your award? They do actually Not necessarily on the day of the race, but I mean this is genuine. I mean that is a it is a race challenge. Yeah, you definitely need to watch out for some fresh ones as well as some maybe not so fresh. It gets worse when it rains because it is extra slippery. It's not like they're everywhere, but, yeah, you definitely want to watch your steps.

Speaker 2:

So here's an analogy for you the roads are used by both buggies and vehicles, so you can imagine what happens. So it could be a mile of road apple.

Speaker 7:

Did the Amish provide like good baked goods goods I know they have great donuts and things. Did they provide those at um the pre-weekend dinner and then the post um run as well?

Speaker 3:

so at Packard Pickup you got a whoopie pie in your bag, so it came with your registration. I ate mine for breakfast, for my fueling before my race on that day.

Speaker 7:

That sounds delicious, sounds just like me, right, Alicia?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it does.

Speaker 9:

Chasing with some water. The dessert looked fantastic. Some of you guys had the dessert at dinner.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah.

Speaker 8:

I flew home with my whoopie pie and it's still in my fridge right now. So I'm kind of I flew home with that and apple butter and several other things I picked up that weekend. So I'm going to try to spread it out because heaven knows when I'm going to get some decent stuff again.

Speaker 7:

I love that they're not only there to like support the Roars, but also you get to support them in what they provide for the community and all of the goods that they produce, so that's a really cool experience on both ends of this race.

Speaker 9:

You really did feel like you were being welcomed into their community for just a brief bit of time. Yeah, it was really neat.

Speaker 6:

It's true, and again, it's been a couple of years, but it's not just an Amish community. There are non-Amish folks in the community who are also a big part of the event.

Speaker 7:

So, john, I know last year you were a spectator for this race, but this year you actually participated. Do you want to tell us a little bit about how this year went?

Speaker 2:

Actually it went really well. So me, greg, lizzie and Allie we all started way in the back party pace had a great time going through. It was real fun. I mean the hills were there. I mean they're not as bad as people say they are. I think you know there's that one hill which gets a little funky, but besides that it was pretty good because it's a gradual rolling hill to me I thought it was, so it wasn't that bad.

Speaker 2:

The one thing that I really liked was the views, and what I thought really worked out well was toward the end of the race. They stacked up the water stops and fueling stations like almost from like mile 11 or 10, on almost every half mile. So you were basically got fuel or not fuel, but power aid and water all at the end of the race when you need it. And Rob reminded me and they had ice buckets just screwed across the course so you could grab ice, throw it on you and do whatever you need. There was crafts for sale. Greg wanted me to pick a mirror up and bring it on the rest of the race with me.

Speaker 1:

Listen, the sign said free, so I mean I could use an extra mirror. I thought Lizzie was going to buy a chicken at one point. But, actually, lizzie, speaking of your race experience, tell the kind folks about how you cursed me out about a third of the way into this race.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, You're happy too, greg. So we're running and I just moved here from florida flat florida, beautiful flat florida, and about a third of the way the race, greg just looks at us, everyone is like how's everyone doing? And everyone just seems really happy. And I just immediately go F those hills because I have never like the most hills I've done are overpasses at Disney, like well and Jeff Galloway's race. But I grew up in Atlanta and you feel, as this was.

Speaker 5:

This was rough. This was rough. It was hot. There were a lot of hills. When John just said the hills weren't that bad, I felt personally victimized. Every time we approached a hill, greg, allie and John would come up with a way either telling me to have a tiny hiney as you run, or like just being like we're almost there or you're one third of the way through the long hill, because I was emotionally distraught. I was prepared to just leave y'all and walk the rest of the race through the long hill because I was. I was emotionally distraught.

Speaker 8:

I was prepared to just leave y'all and walk the rest of the race because I couldn't do it lizzie, you should have been with me, and tara, because, um, that was our statement every single time we came up to a hill. As florida people, we went f this hill the entire way up, and then we'd run down, and then we'd do it again and, uh, that was our um, our word of the day but.

Speaker 1:

But going back to, though. What john says, though, about the water stops is you know, the real big behemoth of the hill is just past halfway, it's a little after mile seven. But they reward you though, because at the top of said hill is an aid station. So as long as you get up there, at least there is. If you want to call water and and power aid, or gatorade to treat the the, there is something up there for you which is nice is that that wonderful hill.

Speaker 4:

That's a nice long incline, kind of gentle, until you turn the corner and then you turn the corner and yep like a nine degree incline.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's the one, and then you turn the corner and go up. You turn the corner and then you turn the corner.

Speaker 3:

And then you turn the corner, going to like a nine degree incline yeah, that's the one and then you turn the corner and go up some more before you get to the top Correct.

Speaker 2:

But the one thing they need to do next year for the aid stations paper cups.

Speaker 5:

Plastic is not our friends on those things. I thought that you were bringing up the Rita's Italian ice aid station. That I yeah, let me tell you, bob changed my life good stuff.

Speaker 3:

We're like Rita's is coming.

Speaker 1:

She's like wait what I'm like no good stuff of course Rita's is coming and I will say that that aid station is very strategically placed because it's probably around, probably between mile nine and ten, so it really does give you that boost to the finish, the last quarter of the race. I know I'm in this particular part of the podcast, I'm more playing the guest role, but I actually do have a question for Laura, ann and lady. First of all, you killed it during this entire race. I know we did none of us here got the chance to run with you but I would like you specifically to talk about your finish line experience, because I was in line for soft serve ice cream at the picnic as you were coming across the finish line and something really, really special happened. Can you tell us about that?

Speaker 8:

I was wondering if you're going to talk about that actually. So I'm a proud back of the pack party person. I want to enjoy every minute of my race until they make me get off the course, and I was one of the last ones off the course. I was over and over a four hour person, so that tells you how slow I was. I will say this it is the best supported race I've ever been in for back of the.

Speaker 8:

Packers, I didn't pull any worse water stations at all. Every single water station had water and Gatorade and was fully stocked, and that is amazing to somebody who is out there for a very long time. We were about three tenths of a mile from finishing when the cold current came through and it started raining. It sprinkled and then it just came down and so by the time we hit the finish line, shoot. I was like I'm done with this and I we brand across and the entire area that that everybody had finished at. They started cheering and it was amazing. I was almost in tears because it was a hard race. It's been a hard race pretty much every race since marathon weekend and, um, yeah, it was tough, but uh it. It made me feel good that everybody stayed and cheered for us until the end, and even the people who finished after us. They all got the same reaction and that is absolutely fantastic.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, sure is. Listen before in the time we have left here. You all got together for dinner on Saturday, I believe. How did that?

Speaker 2:

go. So Greg did a great job organizing the dinner at Loxley's. We had a little traffic issue getting there, but it it was a great place. We so we had a great time. You know, we met some of the people from the customized group and I was an extra mile there also, I think.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, there was representation for both. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Extra mile podcast were there and and we had a great time. I mean, the food was good, Everyone's recapping, talking about the race, all the fun stuff, uh, where they're going, who's going to get chocolate, who's going to get shoofly pie, whatever's going on afterwards.

Speaker 9:

I sort of feel like Lizzie did when I got there on Friday because I didn't know anybody. I think that you guys, some of you have met each other before at different events and different races and whatnot, and by the time I left on Saturday I felt like I had left friends I had known for for years and it was. It was really special and I I was really excited to jump on the call to see y'all again, because it was I had so much fun.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, I was. I was going to say, rob, that that's the thing about this group and I'm sure there are others, but it's one that you will walk in to something like a meetup and think that everybody there has known each other for years when in fact most of them have just met and they just have that common spirit and that camaraderie and we just get along with one another. It's a wonderful thing, Sincerely wonderful thing.

Speaker 1:

Loxley's is always a bunch of fun. It's a wonderful thing, sincerely wonderful thing. Loxley is always a bunch of fun. It's a restaurant that's located maybe about 20 minutes outside of Birmingham, but we did make a joke, though, that I'm going to talk to our friend Nate, who in years past has always been the spearhead of this entire weekend, and he does such a great job. Unfortunately, nate couldn't participate entire weekend and he does such a great job. Unfortunately, nate couldn't participate uh this weekend because uh he did uh get sick uh less than 24 hours before the race, so I felt absolutely gutted yeah but uh, the joke that we had going on is um, next year we should move the meal to shady maple, which is the famous smorgasbord.

Speaker 1:

Uh, that is located in lancaster county it. I think it's designed as the largest buffet in america.

Speaker 1:

I might have to fact check myself on that one but, uh, it is absolutely massive and I think I don't know how many busloads of people that they can feed over the course of um an entire day, which is really impressive. So, if you're interested, google, uh, shady maple smorgasbord and I promise you won't be disappointed. But um, you know, I just I do want to backtrack though real, real quick and I just want to get everyone's reaction to this, especially uh, lizzie's and ali's on this one.

Speaker 1:

Um, can you describe the euphoria that went through your minds, um, when you ate the chicken at the post-race picnic? Oh my god it's my I only, I only knew lizzie for less than 24 hours and at that moment, she, she, it's like she saw god it was so good yeah isn't it we walked into the buffet and I was like, or like the line of food they had.

Speaker 5:

And you look down there's like this bucket, like a tub, like a tub layer big bin that you store decorations for holidays in full of chicken. And I'm gonna be honest, at first I was like I am not touching that chicken. I don't know where it's been. It's kind of it was running the course about 15 minutes prior that was the chicken I almost took home as a pet earlier in the race.

Speaker 5:

But, um, we sat down and we had like chicken and hot dogs and I, I swear I I'm still thinking about that chicken. I went to work today because I'm hybrid and I told everyone in my office about that chicken that I ran into because it was so good.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, she's not wrong. I wasn't so sure about it either, Lizzie. It was like a Tupperware container or like a bin that you put holiday decorations in, Like what is that? I'm also not a huge fan of barbecue chicken like that, but it was really good. I'm glad I actually tried it because sometimes I'll pass on that and it was really good. I could have definitely eaten way more than the one piece that I had.

Speaker 6:

Hey, for what it's worth, it's been two years since I was there. I still remember the chicken. It was delicious, absolutely. I don't know what makes it unique, what makes it different from everybody else, but they do something special.

Speaker 3:

I don't know what makes it unique, what makes it different from everybody else, but they do something special.

Speaker 5:

Now, lizzie, you have the ribs. How are the ribs, lizzie? Oh, yeah, well, that was. You know I think it was around mile 10 that every time we started struggling, Greg would be like do it for the ribs. Yeah, greg, I'm doing it for those ribs. They were really good. They were like smoked, like they had the smoker there on site. I'm not a big pork person, but I got through my ribs and I was like, dang, this was the right choice. They were good.

Speaker 2:

Fell right off the bone. Nice and thick. None of those thin ribs, no wimpy stuff. Huh, john. No, they were good Friday. When we were there they were seasoning them all up putting them all in the tray, putting them in the back of a pickup truck. I don't know where they went, but they left the course.

Speaker 3:

I don't want to know.

Speaker 6:

That's got to be the secret with the chicken too. There's got to be some kind of a marinade or some kind of a— yeah, what's the word I'm looking for? Never mind, Let me press pause till I think of the word. No, it's okay, but they some kind of something they do before they cook it. Brine it.

Speaker 2:

Brining. Thank you.

Speaker 6:

John, that's what I was thinking.

Speaker 2:

That was Laura Ann. She was typing in the chat.

Speaker 6:

Oh, that's it, Laura Ann, you got it.

Speaker 7:

I see it out there now, guys, this has been so great hearing about the bird in hand races. Do you plan to do it again next year? Will you be back For the chicken?

Speaker 5:

alone. Yes.

Speaker 7:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

You don't have to run the race to get the chicken. That's right, you don't, no it?

Speaker 5:

has to be a reward system but honestly it was one of my favorite races I've ever done. I've actually texted any person I know who runs and been like next year come visit.

Speaker 8:

This is so fun?

Speaker 3:

No, I'm hoping to be at Disneyland next year for the Halloween races. Okay, that's fair, I'm definitely in next year. I'm hoping to get the road apple next year, so I'll be doing hope, doing garden spot which they moved it back to April, so maybe the weather will be a little better than it was this year and then do Bird and Hand in September. But this weekend was one. I don't run with people. I always am running. All my training runs are by myself, so it was so nice to have people to run with. So as long as there are Rise and Run friends coming to Bird and Hand, I will definitely be at the race weekend, because then I don't have to run by myself.

Speaker 5:

And it's just totally different. I don't care what pace.

Speaker 3:

I'm running, when I'm running with people, it's just nice to not be running alone. So I will definitely be back next year.

Speaker 7:

Rob, what about you?

Speaker 9:

It's already on my calendar.

Speaker 7:

Steve, you already have that coveted award. Are you going to come back?

Speaker 4:

Well, you know, I was talking to a gentleman on the on the course. He actually had a shirt said road, uh warrior, and with an apple in the middle. It took me a while and he said he actually earned four. Up to that point I don't know if I really need to get four road apple awards, but I do like greg's idea. I mean, I've got my first medal last year, which we all know is the big, huge, huge, heavy horseshoes. So he's got a set of four now. So he's got the entire horse.

Speaker 2:

Right.

Speaker 4:

I've got to collect a horse at least, you know. I mean you've got to do an increments of four. So I've got at least two years, and then we'll maybe work on a second horse, but for now, yeah, I'll be back working on that horse.

Speaker 7:

How about you, John and Greg?

Speaker 2:

working on that horse. How about you, john and greg? You're gonna be back. Yeah, I'll be back. You know I I've spectated it for two years. It was fun running.

Speaker 1:

It was so much more fun yeah, a lot of people over the course of the weekend were asking me you know, if disneyland halloween does happen again and it's the same weekend what are you gonna do to do, and I mean, as much fun as Disneyland looked, I think I would still hold true to this race. And if you know folks, if you are interested, you know, in our little, you know, packet pickup they did give us a little business card. I mean the dates are already set for next year.

Speaker 1:

So, if you are interested, the 5K and you know the pre-race festivities is on Friday, september 5th 2025. And then the half marathon is on Saturday, september 6th. So if it's a race that you're interested, get on your calendars. I'm not exactly sure when registration opens, but I would have to imagine it would be within the next couple of weeks or months. So, um, you know, if this, if this call intrigued you to want to do it, then definitely hop on it. You know, I know, you know, I. I felt a little bit of pressure because, you know, rob told me on friday night that, you know I was the reason why he came down for this thing. Um, and then the fact that when he didn't talk to me on saturday morning because the outcome of the Eagles game, and how Saquon.

Speaker 9:

Barkley did.

Speaker 1:

Um, I wasn't sure if he was going to speak to me for the rest of the weekend, but, um, but I was glad to hear, rob, that that you, you know you enjoyed this race so much and that, um, you know, my my glowing uh recaps of this have have uh influenced to come down, so hopefully it influences others as well.

Speaker 3:

Greg, do you have the paper in front of you for the garden spot? I think it said April 25th. Is that right? In case people are interested in the road apple, then you can get both.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I feel like that's right. I think it was the 26th, yeah, april 26th yeah.

Speaker 3:

It was the 26th, okay, yeah. And then there's the road apple if you do both.

Speaker 2:

I might do the 5K next year too, because those cutting boards looked really cool.

Speaker 4:

I feel like Allie's throwing the challenge out there to get more people to think about Garden Spot, Because she just got done saying that she was a loner but probably makes that road apple even better with more people. So how many people are down for that Garden Spot to earn that road apple?

Speaker 6:

Well, gang, great stuff. It is a wonderful event. I'm glad you had a great time and I'm glad you were able to come share it with us. Looking forward to next year I guess I think it will probably grow. I would even consider and I don't know how far out you can make hotel reservations, but I'd even consider looking. And I don't know the name of the hotel across the street, but I'd even consider looking for hotel reservations. Bird and Hand Inn. Bird and Hand Inn, all right. I would take a look at that.

Speaker 2:

That's the address that they give you to look for to come to the event.

Speaker 6:

All right friends, thanks for joining us. We look forward to seeing you again, take care. Come to the event. All right friends, thanks for joining us. Uh, we look forward to seeing you again, take care.

Speaker 1:

Bye, thanks, well, everyone you know, thank you so much for joining us to, to recap, such a special, special race weekend which, you know, based on the comments of everyone, I I hope it, it, you know, based on the comments of everyone, I hope it, it, you know, convinces more of you to uh, want to, you know, make the trek to uh, to Pennsylvania, to, you know, enjoy this race weekend and, you know, attempt to get a selfie with a camel, because there there's there's not many places in the United States where where you can say that. So, um, but yeah, if you're interested in bird in hand, um, you know, feel free to reach out to, you know, John, or myself, or even Bob, you know, if you have specific questions about that race weekend, we'd be more than happy to answer them for you.

Speaker 6:

I want to mention some news, speaking about the family. Every now and then I see something that I want to bring to everyone's attention and our friend Holly, who's a relatively new member of the Rise and Run family. In fact, we were just talking about the summer virtual series. I remember Holly posting one of her early posts as part of the Facebook group that she had just finished running the summer virtual series. Unexpectedly, over Labor Day, she lost her father, and that's very, very difficult. Holly is a young woman. I imagine her father was probably not even as old as I am. So this was unexpected and sudden, and the whole Rise and Run family grieves for you, holly. We feel your pain and we're just glad you're here with us Now. Holly's going to be at Wine and Dine, so we look forward to seeing her there. She did mention that her dad was always proud of her running, so she's going to dedicate herself to the running, and I've run a race in memory of a lost friend and we're just with you, holly. We're sorry to hear about it, but we're with you.

Speaker 6:

Let's turn to some little more uplifting news. Let's do this Back in July of 23,. Our buddy, jack Witzek, joined us in episode 94 to talk about running every street in Camden County, new Jersey. That's a lot of streets, friends. It's a lot of miles, and he's almost done. He's got about 300 miles to go. I don't know what his schedule is, but I would guess, based on what he typically does, we're talking maybe six weeks or two months. Good luck, jack. I know you're going to do it, and when you do, we want to hear from you. Buddy, that was fantastic.

Speaker 1:

It was great to see Jack. He was part of one of the relay teams out in Loopy Looper so it was great to catch up with him and and swap stories and you know and and just you know, hear about, you know the process that he goes through is I remember a bunch of us were asking him questions about you know roads where?

Speaker 1:

you know, there are sidewalks and they're not, and stretches of highway and and all that jazz. So it's really really impressive what he has done and I really commend him on his efforts, because that's no easy feat but he is doing it for an extremely worthy cause and memory. So we're really proud of you, jack.

Speaker 6:

Also in memory of his father. Yes, yeah, passed a while ago.

Speaker 1:

Before we head into the race report, I just have a quick update. I received a message from our friends Kristen and Devin, the awesome leads of the RunFitFab group and the DopeyStrong Facebook group. Uh, you know, for weeks we have been talking about their special event that they are going to be hosting on the Friday of marathon weekend, with a little pop-up events that they're doing, and then combine that with a live uh podcast recording uh with us, uh, here at rise and run. And I know a couple of weeks ago we had said that tickets were sold out. Well, the update that I got from kristin today is that they had a meeting with the venue, um, over at the walt disney world swan, and they told them about the new event space that they are going to be in and is actually larger than what they were originally told.

Speaker 1:

And the good news with that is, because of that news, they can now offer more tickets. So 100 additional tickets have now been put on sale for this awesome event. So if you're interested in attending, I know we can have it linked in our show notes. We will repost the information on our Facebook page as well too, and you can also search for the event via Eventbrite. So again, this is the Friday of Marathon Weekend in getting some very cool swag, a little activation workout and then being present for a live recording of the Rise and Run podcast. Be sure to purchase your tickets and it's going to be an excellent, excellent time. I know that for sure.

Speaker 6:

Same weekend. Don't forget the 101 Dalmatians on the 5K marathon weekend. Still plenty of time to order your shirt or make your own if you want. Whatever you want to do, we'd be happy to have you there. But the shirts offered by Kauai and Pizza Apparel we were talking with Alec last week. They're awesome and at $30 a pop they're a good deal. They will be available for order until Wine and Dine weekend. That's, alec's cutoff is Wine and Dine Weekend. I'll remind you that we have a code that does not apply to the shirts, but if you order other merchandise from Alec at the same time, use the code RISEANDRUN. All one word. You'll get a discount on the other merchandise that you ordered, and if your total is over $50, use the code FREESHIP50. That's FREESHIP50, all one, no spaces for free shipping. John, we got anything going on in the shop?

Speaker 2:

Shop update. Nothing really major, but it looks like we did get the headbands in. So if you ordered a headband just a headband itself, it should be coming out pretty soon and we will be putting the extra inventory up online shortly. So once that comes out, I'll let you guys, we'll let you know and hopefully the shirts will be coming in soon. We'll get those out by the end of the month.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, I think so Sounds good. And now it's time for the.

Speaker 3:

Race Report.

Speaker 6:

Speaker 6:

And we've already talked about the Bird in Hand run and several friends were with us. But I want to mention for sure some other names of folks who put their name in the race report. Like I know, ellie was there and Kelly. Kelly earned a road Apple award. Let's see Allie without any. We already talked to Laura and was with us Lindsay. Lindsay was at the race. Lizzie was with us, rob was with us, yvette was there, for all of these folks did the challenge, the 5k and the half the half. Diana did that one. Greg and John of 5K and the half the half. Diana did that one, greg and John. Of course, laura and Steve talked about and even showed us his Road Apple Award, and that's the names of the folks who. That's all I have. Well, I was going to say our buddy.

Speaker 1:

Roxanne and Robin from Customized Training were also there and, bob, I got to tell you, you know, roxanne and Robin from Customized Training were also there.

Speaker 8:

And.

Speaker 1:

Bob, I got to tell you you know Roxanne pretty well.

Speaker 6:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Sweet, adorable lady.

Speaker 4:

Tiny.

Speaker 1:

She doesn't have a bad bone in her body. Can you believe she almost cheated during the half marathon? No, during that out and back between mile five and six where you just have to loop around that silo real fast, she just decided she was going to cut the course and join our group and save herself a couple of minutes. I said you better not. Or I'm going to call twigs right now.

Speaker 6:

She hopped right back to the other side of the road.

Speaker 1:

I told her I was going to call marathon investigations on her.

Speaker 6:

I thought you were going to tell me she broke bad on somebody, and I was going to tell me she broke bad on somebody, and I was going to tell you I would have no problem believing that.

Speaker 1:

No not at all. I told her I'd have to tease her about that one, but no, Roxanne followed the rules and there's no need for panic there.

Speaker 6:

The other one that made me smile is I was doing the half with Tara and as you go down onto the trail, just before you get to the stadium, there's a complete 180 where you come and then turn right around and there's a cone there.

Speaker 2:

I stepped inside the cone and told Tara oh no, she was very upset, so did you actually complete the course?

Speaker 6:

then. No, I did it on purpose, I cheated.

Speaker 1:

Might as well start calling you Patty Pan now.

Speaker 6:

I cut at least I cut a good foot and a half off that course. Let's see. Let's continue with the race report. On Friday we had a couple of runs One in Charlotte, north Carolina, the Lake Norman 15 and 5K. Kristen was there. I think this race was on Friday, but I'm not sure where it was. Emily is a school teacher and the school where she taught has an annual summer send off 5k, which is kind of cool. Uh, she ran it again. I think it was on a Friday. I'm I'm guessing that, cause apparently some of her students did it. She came in first in her age group but one of her sixth grade students beat her, so she's thinking that's something she's probably going to have to live with for the remainder of this school year. It's all right, emily, you did good.

Speaker 6:

Next up 2025 Disney Marathon. Saturday in Augusta, georgia, the Tunnels to Towers 5K. Nona did that one. A PR bell please. Nona broke the 10 per mile pace, fell just shy of 30 minutes overall for the 5k, got a future goal. No doubt you'll make it. I thought the amish country run was in pennsylvania. It turns out there was one in Millersburg, ohio on the same day.

Speaker 6:

How about that? The Amish Country Half Marathon. Carissa, on a cool Ohio morning, ran this beautiful course along the Ohio Rolling Hills. Wonderful crowd support, all the families out during the race, cheering everyone on. I'll bet you it was very similar to the reactions you get at Bird and Hen.

Speaker 1:

I bet they didn't have a camel though.

Speaker 6:

Well, a bunch of farm animals along, and Hen. I bet they didn't have a camel though. Well, a bunch of farm animals along the way. I'm not sure that a camel is a farm animal, but there were animals. Noodles at the end were the reward for conquering all those hills. You had chicken, she had noodles. Put them together, you may have something going there.

Speaker 7:

Also on Saturday was the Great Smoky Mountain Half Marathon. Megan was there. She has tried to do a handful of half marathons and something just always got in her way, and the morning of this one started off pretty rough. She wants to say a thank you to Jimmy, who was also there, for helping her get to the start line. But as she kept going and kept going and the mile markers were getting higher, she realized that she really was going to do it. And she did. She completed her first half marathon PR bell. I'm super, super proud of you, megan, and I'm so happy that I could help you get there. Jimmy was also there for this race. He actually did the 5k on Friday and helped with bib pickup on Friday as well, and then on Saturday he did the half marathon and he ended up getting a PR by eight minutes.

Speaker 1:

Wow, that's impressive Way to go, jimmy.

Speaker 7:

And it was raining, and so I'm super, super proud of both of them for completing this race.

Speaker 6:

So good job guys, nicely done. Let's go to Chicago, Illinois, for the Run Mag Mile 5K and 10K. A couple runners there. Kelsey said the weather was perfect for a great run. She ran it with her mom and her two friends Great. Laura was also there, wasn't feeling all that well, took it slow, extended some walk breaks Good idea Did her best to enjoy the race. Even though she lives in the suburbs it's still nice to stay downtown sometimes before a race. Yeah, I get it. Short trip to the start line. That way. This time worked particularly well since you could see her hotel from the start line. That's always nice. Stephanie was there. I saw Stephanie post a nice photo with her medal Out in Vancouver, washington, the Apple Tree 5K half marathon and marathon went off this weekend.

Speaker 6:

Jen was there. Jen's from around here. She traveled all the way out there to do the half. Lovely morning for a race until it got a little warm at the end. Scenery was beautiful. Jen knocked off a three-minute half marathon PR.

Speaker 6:

Vanessa did two races. She did the Sunset 5K. Lots of kids running with their parents, which was neat because turns out she was one of them kids. Her dad, richard, did this one. It was Richard's first 5K. He really had a good time. Highly recommend that 5K. And, by the way, richard, that's a PR Well done On the full. Vanessa says it was a wonderful course through downtown Vancouver. That's a PR Well done On the full. Vanessa says it was a wonderful course through downtown Vancouver, along the waterfront, through two beautiful parks, finished with a trail run by an airfield. Two loops of that course for the marathon, great views. Got a bit overheated on the blacktop portions. Yeah, that asphalt will suck up the heat and radiate. It Makes it tough For doing the 10K on Friday.

Speaker 6:

I'm sorry the 10K was on Saturday plus the marathon. She got a special coin, a beast coin, which was pretty cool kind of fun. The event offered post-race beer, good food, pulled pork, sandwiches, vegetarian options, chips, fruit, apples of course at the apple tree marathon, but as was hoping for apple fritters but didn't see any, all great race weekend, highly recommended at the presque isle state park in pennsylvania. The beast on the bay 10 miles, 30 obstacles. Michelle took this one on. This race includes obstacles placed in Lake Erie, swamps, moguls, wave pools and sand. I can't imagine obstacles in the lake, but Michelle nailed it Best part's the final mile, grueling hill, and the final obstacle Running into a giant wave pool. With the waves going, that sounds challenging. There's an adaptive course that folks who can't handle the whole one love. Michelle, good for you.

Speaker 1:

All right, I have an idea based on this Marathon weekend. I know we all complain endlessly about the Blizzard Beach parking lot, but you got to run into Blizzard Beach and run into the wave pool and do an out and back in the wave pool. Do you think people would like it a little bit better?

Speaker 6:

then no.

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 6:

No, I don't think so. All right, you do know, the first year that they did Blizzard Beach, we ran into Blizzard Beach. Yes, I do remember that. Yeah, did you do that one, greg.

Speaker 1:

I did not, but I remember you telling stories.

Speaker 6:

No it wasn't good.

Speaker 6:

If you thought the international squeezeway was tight, this was a little tighter, it was basically a sidewalk and they only did it the one year. I mean, sometimes you try something, then you learn. Okay, no complaints there. But yep, so no, I think I'll pass on doing the Blizzard Beach Wave Pool for a run. Not, michelle, though Michelle might do it. You could probably talk her into it. Let's go to Danville, indiana, the fair on the square 5K Kathy. Kathy started PT this week for her knees and the run went about as she expected. I hope that was good, kathy. The chilly 48 degrees at the start, with the high getting to 64. It was literally 60 degrees warmer out in Anaheim. I don't know that it actually reached 108. It did reach 106. So, yeah, 48 is better for running.

Speaker 6:

In mackinac island, michigan, the mackinac island eight mile run and walk. Tracy did this one as a virtual. It's part of the mackinac island trio of races. Cedar city, ut. The Cedar City Half Marathon. Emily, who is Sarah's sister, ran this one on a beautiful day. The route went right down Cedar Canyon Start line at 8,200 feet, finish line at 5,600 feet, so 2,600 feet of elevation loss. On the race. Runners were serenaded by bagpipes at mile four, which is a yearly tradition. Apparently it makes them run faster. I don't know Any bagpipe fans here. I'm seeing no, I'm getting no recognition'm seeing no, uh, I'm getting, I'm getting no, uh, recognition.

Speaker 1:

Huge fan Bob.

Speaker 6:

Well, apparently it makes people run faster. I don't know. With the kilt on right, I had a buddy who used to play the bagpipes. He was a fellow soccer referee and, uh, he'd have them in the trunk of his car. I remember one time we showed up at a match and it was delayed. He got his bagpipes out and started playing, all right. But it's not the bagpipe report, it's the race report.

Speaker 6:

So let's go to Williamsport, maryland, for the lock to lock marathon, so named because it goes from the old lock houses that allowed the boats to go up and down the Chesapeake and Ohio uh canal. So it's a. It's an out and back two times. Dirt and gravel trail race starts at lock house, 44 turns around at 45. Temperatures again were great for and I don't think I've mentioned our runners yet was Catherine and Carrie. It was great for our runners. Most of the past shaded by trees, great scenery, views of the Potomac River along the way. The only downside of this race this weekend was that it rained a bit. It started a little over an hour. In Turned a lot of the sections into mud and standing water, which slowed them down a little. Despite that, both Catherine and Kerry finished and as it was Catherine's first marathon, congratulations to both of you. Let's go to Sunday in Tyler, texas, the Rose City Triathlon.

Speaker 6:

Jessica and Ellie. Now, jessica was one of our intro people tonight, so how's that? For lucky timing these intros are way out in front. But, jessica, congratulations. First triathlon for both Jessica and Ellie, who's Jessica's daughter. Scrim was scrim. Yes, the swim was a little scary. I understand that, swimming in a bunch of crowd of people. So Ellie finished first and took off on the bike. Jessica caught up to Ellie on the bike. Ellie kept saying that she felt like the pedal was going to fall off, which it did about 11 miles into it. I'm not sure how far the bike ride was, but Ellie finished the rest of it with only one pedal, pedaling with one leg Not easy, kids. It's not too bad if you have the clipless pedals like a road bike where you can actually pull. It's not too bad if you have the clipless pedals like a road bike where you can actually pull. No, these were just the kind of pedals where you just push down, and she made it that's unbelievable yeah, it's impressive.

Speaker 6:

Run was definitely the easiest part for jessica. Uh, somehow they both ended up winning. Ellie finished second, j Jessica finished third in their age groups Great experience. They plan to do it again next year with a bicycle that has two pedals Highly recommended.

Speaker 6:

The biggest event of the weekend occurred in England, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne Newcastle-upon-Tyne the Great North Run. This is the world's largest half marathon with over 60,000 runners, not 16, 6-0-thousand runners. Our friends Amy and Andrew were both there. I'll start with Amy. Amy ran the half. Great medal, great atmosphere. They had rain during the half. Crowds still came out to cheer for the runners. Amy finished her third fastest half ever. Not easy if you're in a crowd that big. So great job, amy. Andrew started with the 5k. Great weather, stuck to an easy pace on that one Race. Number two was a kid's race, so the kids get a chance to grab a medal. His daughter, lena, ran this 1.5k across a couple of bridges, crowd making lots of noise at the finish line. It was her third mini race at the Newcastle Great Run and her fastest ever was a time of 8 minutes and 34 seconds, and that is a PR.

Speaker 1:

I absolutely adored these photos that Andrew put up. She looked like she was having an absolute blast and, lena, you should be extremely proud of yourself. Way to go, kiddo, and that's a good pace.

Speaker 6:

That's a very good pace 830, that's just a tiny bit under a mile, about 100 yards short of a mile. So that's a pretty darn good pace Way to go. And then the third race of the weekend, of course, was the Great North One Foggy Apparently. On Saturday it was foggy but the fog lifted. This time it turned to rain. Still was great. Tenth running of the Great North Run.

Speaker 6:

For Andrew, a couple of problems at the start, but he's never seen or heard such amazing support along the course. Even though it's busy, he'd tell everybody to give this one a try, simply for the atmosphere, the heritage and the prestige that the Great North Run holds. Andrew, I'm thinking about it, I genuinely am. We'll see what happens In Los Angeles.

Speaker 6:

The Disneyland race weekend wasn't the only thing going on. The Santa Monica Classic 10K was. This is part of what Jackie called the Southern California Dopey. It's the first of four races the Santa Monica 10K, the Rose Bowl Half Marathon, the LA Big 5K and the LA Marathon. Those are dopey distances 48.6 miles and six medals. The only difference, and it's just a minor point instead of four days, these occur over six months. Still, that's cool. Kayla and Jackie, along with Jackie's husband Fred, ran this one hot and humid. It was hot and it was humid. By California standards it was. I think DuPont was in the low 60s, which around here we'd say was wonderful, but the temperature was very high so it was tough. Race organizers did a great job adjusting for the weather. Jackie and her husband also ran the Disneyland 5K and 10K. Let's see In South Nyack, new York, the South Nyack 10-Miler Sioux talked about the beautiful views and the not-so-beautiful hills at this 10-Miler Free ice cream at the end made up for all the hills.

Speaker 6:

The Santa Monica Classic. I know I just got done talking about it. Kayla, I said, was there. I have my notes off a little bit. Kayla, here's what she had to say. Of course, start time and the bid pickup policy were changed just 48 hours before. Of course it was very crowded. Kayla struggled with pacing, the heat, oh yeah, and a time limit for completing the first loop. So she finished after five kilometers, despite some setbacks. She learned some valuable lessons about pacing, hydration and race conditions. Kayla, good for you, nice job. Hydration and race conditions Kayla, good for you, nice job.

Speaker 6:

Here's a race that I remember from years ago being on Wide World of Sports, which used to be a staple on Saturday afternoon on television. It wasn't the New Balance then, it was just the Fifth Avenue Mile, but now it's the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile, right down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. A straight shot. Grace did this. One Hasn't officially raced a mile since the presidential fitness test in middle school. That was only a couple years ago for Grace, though Back then she thinks she was in the 815, 820 range for a mile. Her goal today, some years later, was to run a sub 830, and she was shocked. She passed the halfway mark in four minutes. Wasn't sure she'd be able to hold on, but she did. Finished in 744, fastest mile she's ever run in a race or otherwise. That's PR.

Speaker 1:

That's a great magic mile too.

Speaker 6:

It is. Megan, with Allison, ran this one. Megan PR'd in this race A great short distance on a beautiful Sunday morning. Been working towards qualifying for New York City 2025, on a beautiful Sunday morning. Been working towards qualifying for New York City 2025, and has completed five of the nine required races for the nine, plus one to get an entry.

Speaker 6:

One of the reasons this thing was on Wide World of Sports is it would typically be a record for a mile, but it wasn't a recognized record because it wasn't around a track. There's an advantage just a straight shot that you don't have to make those turns at each of the four laps. So it is a little bit faster, but that doesn't account for. You know, knocking out like Grace and Megan did, they're not well. They did great. That's what I want to say. They both did extremely well.

Speaker 6:

Speaking of doing extremely well, at the George Washington Patriot Run 10-miler in Mount Vernon, virginia, our friend, Jennifer ran this one. Now, this course goes along a parkway which is mostly closed, so there aren't spectators there, but it's an out-and-back and I've done a bunch of these and you have too. So on the way back, jennifer's running and the runners coming past her are noticing she's first female overall and they're cheering for her along the way. And as she gets towards the end they catch up with a group of walkers in the 5K and a couple of guys near her start yelling out clear a path for the first lady. That's when it really sunk into her what she was doing. Then she hits the tape. Overall winner first female Jennifer. This is a big deal girl Way to go. This isn't I. Finished first out of three. This is the significant 10-mile event in Mount Vernon, virginia. So, jennifer, we're proud of you. Good job. I don't even know if it's a PR. You get a bell anyway. All right.

Speaker 6:

In Ensaday in the Netherlands, the Singaloop, the Singaloop five miler. Laura, you'll have to tell me how I did. Laura did this one. Ensaday is her hometown. She and her husband John ran it with friends. They had 11 miles training for the day, training for Dopey, so they ran from their house to the start and then back. After their finish. Her friend Linda made t-shirts for the Dopey Training Club. Lots of positive feedback about their outfits. The husbands got together ran the race as well. After the race, laura and her friend got interviewed. Her friend Linda got interviewed on TV. I listened, didn't understand a word, but it's still cool that they got interviewed. Let's finish the race report.

Speaker 6:

In Erie, pennsylvania, the Erie Marathon. David did this one. Perfect weather. It was a bit breezy and if you've seen David's photo you will believe that Two laps around the scenic Presque Isle State Park in Erie. This has to be part of the event we talked about earlier. Anyway, it was as flat as could be around the lake, barely missed a PR Felt strong. Really enjoyed the race. Next stop for David Walt Disney World Marathon weekend. Big race weekend. Friends. That wraps up the race report. Congratulations to all our runners. It was a blast being back with the Run Disney family, with the Rise and Run family. I was excited. I hope you're as excited about looking forward to your next event that's coming up. But, friends and if you run, you know you are our friend We'll get there soon enough. Until then, happy running.
