Um. So, uh, this week, um, I was challenged um our wonderful friends over at the will run for podcast I mean the folks who came in second place.

Clearly there is still some emotional and mental damage that is still hanging around.

And I was challenged by our friends that if I came on the Rise and Run podcast this week and offered an official apology, my wonderful friend Tom would sign up to be a member of a relay team for the Loopy Looper 24-hour relay team this August. And it is something that I really would like to see Tom do, because I loved seeing Tom's confidence in his running journey this past springtime surprise, I mean, he was really kicking in the high gear and that really, really made me happy to see. So I want to help him keep that trajectory. So, statement aside, I'm a big proponent of mental health and I do not want to see my friends over at Will Run For it be mentally anguished by this anymore. So I officially would like to apologize for giving Alicia a good answer.

Speaker 2:

Sound effect for equating plastic cheese to nachos Touche, touche, touche, bob, touche. Yes, and you know, I know our buddy chad had made a comment when we'll run for, put up a, a instagram poll about. You know whether my logic was sound, uh, and he said that we'll run, got robbed. And I followed that up by saying well, if you can dip the chip, you must acquit. And then I realized that in theory you really don't dip nachos, you just pull them apart.

Speaker 2:

So I'm sorry, I apologize that I have caused such mental harm and so I'm doing this on behalf because I want to see, uh, my friend tom run this race. So tom and aaron and michael and diana I am sorry and I know you guys want to rematch and we will gladly go ahead and do that rematch and my wife has already offered to serve as a independent, non-biased um statistics uh person to make sure that everything is fair and makes the categories and everything like that, so we have a impartial third party, so everything is fair and square and that there's no more accusations of point shaving or inside jobs or anything like that. So one more time, I'm sorry.

Speaker 1:

Listen. I know it's an audio-only podcast and I can't see who it is, but I can see the gun behind you. Who's?

holding it, I swear. I saw him crossing his fingers behind his back. You know what that means, people.

Here's. Here's the sad part, though when will run for put out that, uh, that poll about does plastic cheese equal nachos? My own wife voted and said that I was wrong, to which then, later in the day, I received a text message from aaron with a screenshot of my wife's response via instagram.

Speaker 1:

So, even so, it's even a house divided here yeah, I don't think I want meredith being the emcee then but at that rate you're gonna have some nachos at that food stations right.

Speaker 2:

So that's the thing. So before Tom put out this challenge, there was a comment made on their podcast about that Tom would actually come up just to throw cups of plastic cheese at me on the course, cheese at me on the course. So based on that alone, I mean, grant loopy looper has a wonderful tent with lots of food for for all of the runners, um, but I plan on myself for our little tent there will be abundance of tortilla chips and various cheeses to dip in for everybody to enjoy greg, I've got seven containers of plastic cheese in the garage.

Speaker 2:

If you can mail those off to Pennsylvania, I'd really appreciate it. I'll do it.

Speaker 7:

Are they still good or are they expired by now?

Speaker 2:

It's that Wine and Dine edition that was expired by three days 2084.

Speaker 1:

I think they expire.

Speaker 7:

We're okay, Well you have seven of them.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I do, oh, no, and they've been sitting in a garage in Florida where the temperature probably reaches 105 degrees.

Speaker 7:

So I'm sure they're great they're cooking Bob, That'll be a real industry looper with you, start eating that cheese, oh dear.

Speaker 1:

Lord, I'll send them to you. Greg, I'll do it.

Speaker 7:

That's like a fear factor game.

Speaker 1:

So I need to start making notes of all the things I say I'm going to do. All right, I think Will Runford got more mileage out of losing this thing than they would had they won.

Speaker 2:

I'm proud of them. I am proud of them that they, even though they were using whisper voices on the podcast, they did admit that even if they would have won that round, they still would have lost because you guys won the triple points round.

Speaker 1:

But again I now I hope this is uh, queso under the bridge and we can, and we can, we can move on from it. All right, speaking of moving along, let's uh, let's take a look at the training schedule, as we usually do. Friends, the hallow Halloween race now is 12 weeks away. We return to the run Disney season in 12 weeks at Disneyland. This is training week number six. Your long training run if you're doing one of the long run events that weekend is six and a half miles this week, so you're halfway to the half marathon.

Speaker 1:

Other items of note and we're going to talk about this in a little bit with Brittany Kids we're less than three weeks away from starting training for Wine and Dine and Marathon Weekend. That's coming up fast. Also coming up fast is Registration Day for the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend. That's coming up fast. Also coming up fast is Registration Day for the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend. Today was Registration Day for the Club Run Disney folks, today being Tuesday, not Thursday as this is released, but Tuesday as we're speaking. So Club Run Disney folks are in. The rest of us it is next Tuesday. I'm almost certain I've asked this before. None of us at this time are planning to register, are we? Yeah, I didn't think so you know what.

Speaker 7:

This might be the first Run Disney event that no one from Rise and Run is going to.

Speaker 1:

First time in a long time.

Speaker 7:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

But this is only the third one in California. And for well, for all of us, it's a long trip, Longer for some than others, but for all of us it's at least halfway across the country.

Speaker 7:

I will say this though. Speaker 5:

I do okay um. So as a part of my journey that includes the weight loss accountability chat and the step I have officially followed Jack's lead and joined Tom in a personal training journey.

Speaker 1:

Very cool.

Speaker 5:

Awesome, we're starting at ground zero.

Speaker 1:

That's a very good place to start.

Speaker 5:

Right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, start at the beginning. Let's start at the very beginning. Yeah, it's going through my head too, yeah.

Speaker 5:

And yesterday was my head too. Yeah, and yesterday was my first workout. I personally don't enjoy strength training like ever at all.

Speaker 1:

I'm with you.

Speaker 5:

It's just not something that like fires me up, but I did it. It was a good workout. My arms are all noodley, um, and we're trying to establish a baseline to work off of and, um, yeah, I'm really excited. That is exciting.

Speaker 1:

I mean I'm, I'm with you, I have through my athletic career and now as an adult and as a senior I still don't like making heavy metal objects move repeatedly, but I do, I have finally it's taken 70 years I've finally learned that I've got to do it, I've got to do it and I've got to stick with it. So good for you. But speaking of Tom and training and challenges, jack, you've got some news from the muscle mouse, don't you?

Speaker 7:

Oh, yes, you guys. I am very excited about this. So Tom is doing a summer challenge. It's called the Stoked Metabolic Transformation Challenge. Basically what this is, it is an eight week challenge, running from July 8th to September 2nd, and it's designed to take your fitness goals to the next level. So, whether you're getting started or ready to kick things into high gear, this eight week challenge is designed for you.

Speaker 7:

Honestly, this is also a great way that, if you are curious about joining Tom and having him as a coach, this is a great way to see what it's like. And I mean, what's better fun way to do a challenge than be motivated with a whole group that's going to be joining with you, I mean. So it's an accountability thing as well, and I think that's a lot of fun. And it's the summer months, it's the hot months, it's always hard to get out there, but if we're all working together for as well, and I think that's a lot of fun, and it's the summer months, it's the hot months, it's always hard to get out there, but if we're all working together for a common goal, I think we're going to do great.

Speaker 1:

I agree, I am going to look into it myself and Tom's going to be in the podcast with us next week. He can explain a little more. All right, good stuff, friends. Hey, more news from Run. Disney Halloween weekend. Disneyland Halloween weekend medals made their debut this week. Gang, what do?

Speaker 7:

you think. So I actually really love them, and if you look really closely, especially on the 5K medal, it looks like it might have a little bit of a glossy finish.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, you did see that, jack. I really like what Haunted Mansion we know is my. Yeah, I really like what Haunted Mansion we know is my favorite ride, but I like that one. If you look closely it has a little knocker on it.

Speaker 2:

I was going to say what happened to Dinosaur.

Speaker 6:

It went extinct, I know, Dinosaur is my favorite ride, but at Magic Kingdom. I guess I should have said.

Speaker 5:

You don't have Dinosaur on your favorite ride, but at magic kingdom I guess I should have said okay, okay you don't have dinosaurs, your favorite ride you sure are alicia, what is wrong with you we?

Speaker 1:

just jumped all. We just jumped all over that, didn't we, alicia? Yeah?

Speaker 6:

but anyway, at magic kingdom my favorite ride is on a mansion and if you look really closely there's like a door knocker on it, which I thought was super cute.

Speaker 5:

I saw that that was super cute. Do we think that one?

Speaker 2:

I kind of would hope so.

Speaker 7:

I don't know, you know what would have been really cool if it was like you had the images of the ghost. And then it's one of those things where it switches and it's the hat ghost. What is that called Hatbox?

Speaker 1:

You know how much I pay attention. I thought they were nice. There's the shocker this century. Is the Haunted Mansion the 5K, or what distance?

Speaker 3:

is it 10K?

Speaker 1:

10K. Okay, I get that one. Okay, because I'm doing the challenge out there, I'm not doing the 5K.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 6:

Since Becky retired? Yeah, now here's a question I have.

Speaker 5:

I'm looking at the photos of them and one of the cutest ones that I think is the kids' races, one I know in the past that, yeah, I can't get away with that, though, greg, they'll see right through me.

Speaker 1:

That's true, that's very true.

Speaker 2:

I know in the past those metals have been rubber.

Speaker 1:

But this one almost kind of looks metal, or are my eyes just playing tricks on me? I don't know, and this is something else I say all the time. They usually look better and are different when we see them for real. So I mean very true, I just don't know uh I think you're right, greg.

Speaker 6:

Now that I'm looking at it I I didn't look that closely the first time, but it does look like it's a metal, metal, yeah well, there you go, that's cool.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it was great. I turned 36 and I feel like I did like brunch and then come afternoon I was like I think it's nap time, so I'm a little older?

Speaker 1:

No, you're not ready for that. You're still young and lots of good, great years ahead of you. That's awesome, well, wonderful, hey, what you been up to since we last talked with you. I know one thing you did. I know one thing you were back at Lake Sonoma killing it there. Yeah, tell our friends what you did there.

Speaker 8:

That was the Lake Sonoma Marathon, which is sponsored by the North Face, so that's why I like to go back there every year. So this is a third year in a row that I raced there. I did the 50 miler three years ago. That was my debut 50. Last year I did the half marathon and then this year I did the full marathon and it was like so I won it and set the course record, um, but it was just one of those runs. It was one of those days it was super muddy, it was crazy, but it was one of those days where I just felt like amazing, like I was like it felt effortless, it just felt so good. So that was just a really, really fun day. And I was listening to don't get offended, but I was listening to another podcast.

Speaker 1:

That's fine For most of it.

Speaker 8:

I love Armchair Expert with Dak Shepard. So most of the race that's what I was listening to as a podcast, which blew people's minds that I was racing but listening to a podcast. But it was. It was awesome, loved it.

Speaker 1:

Well, yeah, that's cool. I can understand listening to something while you're out there. I mean that's great. And of course, yeah, we podcasts are. I like listening to podcasts and I listen to other ones too.

Speaker 8:

I often listen to you guys. So, yeah, it's lovely having the variety of people along your run with you.

Speaker 2:

So, brittany, again congratulations on winning Lake Sonoma. Again, my question for you is was there any like built up pressure for yourself? Like you know, a couple of years ago you go into this race, you win the 50 miler and now you know maybe people are hearing oh, brittany Sharbono is coming back and but she's going at a different distance. Was there any, like you know, again pent up? You know, pressure either from yourself or, like from others in the community running that race, knowing that you were going to try and go for a win in your second event of the same race weekend surprisingly.

Speaker 8:

No, um, I think, coming off of last year last year was a massive year, it was a tough year, um, and I think I just really went into this season and the start of this year trying to reevaluate, like what really matters, who actually cares? You know what I mean. Like, who care? Like do people care at all about the results? Not really. And like one race happens and it's over. So I was just thinking like I just want to go, like I just want to go.

Speaker 8:

I again I've been working so hard I have two therapists now, um, but I've been working really hard on just like how I'm talking to myself, like what I am actually internalizing and like genuinely being my own best cheerleader, and I feel like that was just like I don't care what happens, like truly, I went into that and I was like, if I win, great, I had no clue what the course record time was I had. I went into that and I was like, if I win, great, I had no clue what the course record time was. I had no time in mind. I was like I just want to go run hard, I want to pretend like it's almost like my Sunday long run, and that's why I listened to the podcast while I was racing, um, and so that was my goal and I was like I'll push when I feel like it, um, and that was kind of it.

Speaker 8:

So, luckily, this was like that was another, just big win for me. It was not putting that pressure on Um. I kind of felt back in the zone of Disney, a little bit of dopey, when I was like I'm just focused on today, like I don't need to worry about if I'm trying to win the marathon on Sunday. I'm just focused on today. So, um, I'm like proud to say that genuinely, I felt like I wasn't going into it with any expectations or stress.

Speaker 2:

Now. Now, not to add stress, though I'm just curious now because I'm on the the race website right now. Obviously, the three events are the 50 miler, which you've won, the marathon, which you've won, but then there's also the trail sisters half, because you know you're synonymous with winning all the Disney races. Is there any thought of maybe going back again and trying the half and see if you can get a clean sweep of all three?

Speaker 8:

Oh, yeah, I probably would. I wouldn't have thought about that. Yeah, I probably would. I mean, as far as I know, north Face is going to continue being the sponsor and that race, if anyone hasn't done that, and looking for just a really great trail spring race, I highly recommend Sonoma, but I don't know, maybe I might go back and just see what I can do. It's always fun to go back, especially on shorter stuff where you can just like see if you can improve. So stay tuned, who knows?

Speaker 2:

Okay. So when you do it and when you win, and they you know, and you start doing the press for it. Just remember, the rise and run podcast was the one that gave you the idea to go for the lakes and nova clean.

Speaker 8:

I'm not going to do any other press besides with you guys exactly like jay leno back in the 80s.

Speaker 1:

Yeah that's wonderful. Hey, I obviously pay attention to your social posts because you are fun to follow. Funny runner. Funny runner 26.2, right.

Yeah, on Instagram. If you're not following it, friends, you need to do that. I noticed that you, in addition to your training and running, et cetera, you've been doing some rappelling and some mountain climbing.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, I feel like I've been getting pretty outdoorsy. So it's the running joke on the North Face team. So North Face has runners, climbers, mountaineers and snow athletes, which is really what traditionally people think about when they think about the North Face team. But I'm lovingly known as the least North Face on the entire team, which I fully embrace. I'm like, I love my costumes, my nails, my mascara. I don't like camping, I just like like I just like to like run on the trails, um, but there's been some opportunities to get to do some more like quote unquote outdoorsy things that I've kind of always been afraid of or just didn't think of myself as that person, um, so it's been fun. Like. I've been camping. I've been, um, yeah, doing rappelling. I have have I did my first outdoor climb, um, a couple weeks ago in idaho, so it's been really fun. So, um, yeah, so I feel like I'm slowly chipping away at my least north face on the team you are the great photos, of course, and it looked like fun um climbing.

Speaker 1:

Not familiar with rappelling, I've done. John and I were talking before everybody got on. You need to rappel out of a helicopter, there you go. That's the way, just right out the side, straight down. Yep.

Speaker 8:

Do you know? It's been a year since I had to get taken off of that mountain in a helicopter.

Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh yes, oh yeah.

Speaker 8:

When we last met our hero, yeah, and he held up the rides for a while.

Speaker 1:

Okay, yeah, and I do. Honestly, I do recommend staying inside. Yes, Brittany, you talked about two therapists. I want to slide over and talk about something that we talked about a little bit last time you were with us, and that is Own your Weird. I was afraid it had disappeared. I was looking you know I'm on the mailing list and I didn't get anything. Then it came back.

Speaker 8:

Yes, so Own your Weird is my sub stack, which I sometimes feel like an old lady, especially when it comes to like social media and stuff. I only do Instagram. I can't do Facebook anymore. I definitely can't talk. I agree, do Instagram, I can't do.

I'm embracing it, but I just I feel like it's it's makes me a little bit sad when my I put a lot of sometimes I put a lot of heart and soul into my Instagram posts, as you guys know, and I'm like I think my stuff is, unless it's running that really gets a lot of hits, but if it's any of my other stuff, it feels like I'm like nobody's seeing this, like the algorithm doesn't know what to do with me, and I'm like I don't know if people are really digesting the long form Instagram anymore. Like I feel like it's reels or um, kind of the shorter set, and my brain really needs like to let my creativity out and I love writing. Um, that goes back to my days at second city. You know writing comedy and um.

Speaker 8:

So I've just like I started this sub stack gosh, probably well over a year ago. I was like gung ho about it and I was like, okay, this I'm going to call it own, your weird, and there's going to be no rules and it's going to be whatever I want and I'm going to do it all the time. And I put out like the first, like couple, and then I just dropped off the face of the earth and I was like what am I doing? Who am I? This is embarrassing, I shouldn't be doing like. My imposter syndrome just flared like none other and I just kind of gave it up. And then I went back to, or I went to, art camp in Santa Fe a couple of weeks ago which was amazing.

Speaker 8:

It was hosted by the Jealous Curator, which, if you don't know her or don't follow her, she's an amazing. Follow the Jealous Curator and she has a daily sub stack which I don't know how she does it.

Speaker 1:

Oh, wow, yeah, that's ambitious.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, it's unbelievable. So I got to spend a week with her and just picked her brain on that and she kind of gave me the confidence of like people need to hear stuff, or, and it was just, it's almost like my sub stack is less about like people need to hear my stuff and it's more just like. This is just where my brain lives and it's almost like here are just my thoughts, here's my art, here's the things I'm loving. It's a place where I can also promote, um, weird things that I'm enjoying right now that have nothing to do with running, or you know, everything's word of mouth and it's fun for me to share things like that and tag other people so I'm happy to say it's back, Um, I was like I'm going to do it every week, and then, um, it's been like two weeks but don't put that pressure on yourself.

Speaker 1:

when you want to have, do it and have fun. Yeah, so I feel, feel like came back with came back with excuterus, didn't you wasn't?

Speaker 8:

that the first. Yeah, so that came from yeah, I'll let you explain that oh my god, if people, if that's their first one, they're like what is? The only people that know me are like all right, I kind of get this um, oh yeah so at art camp, um, it was really cool.

Speaker 8:

So there was like it was a week long in Santa Fe. There was, I think, 10 women, and then it's hosted by the jealous curator and another artist named Alexis Mixter and we. It was just like the goal that week was just like make art, get out of your comfort zones, try something new. So we had just full studio time every single day and then we got to work with Danielle, who is a jealous curator, and Alexis and just kind of pick their brains. But I was with, I was the youngest one there, maybe by like 10 years or so, but it was so interesting because we'd have a prompt at the beginning of every day and one of the days was excuses like why are you not making art? Why are you not making art? And it felt like all of us just had these excuses, especially as women, of why we aren't. Most of them are moms. So they had all these excuses why they can't make art because of all these reasons. And somebody said like, oh, it's like an ex-cuterist, because it's like we're all women.

Speaker 8:

And I was like, oh my God, that character has to come to life and I was like, oh my God, that character has to come to life.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 8:

I worked on. So I, like, didn't do any other art really besides going to the thrift store and creating the Excuterus and I have a video that I still need to post but I was like rolling around the ground like running around the studio as the Excuterus.

Speaker 1:

Here's why I'm laughing so hard. I've seen this. I haven't seen the video. Oh, I've seen the ex-cuterus costume. If you haven't seen it, it's a riot it's a uterus, so it's a.

Speaker 8:

I'm in a pink leotard and I made a helmet that has fallopian tubes and over he's.

Speaker 1:

I went there, yeah which is why I'm cracking up.

Speaker 8:

I feel like I pushed myself out of my comfort zone on that one Cause. I was like this is so weird. But I was like you know what? This is perfect. This is what I want for. Own your Weird. It's just like. Even if nobody gets it, I'm cool with it, cause I had a blast and it was. It was weird.

Speaker 1:

Well, you made this old guy laugh, so that's a good thing.

Speaker 8:

I'll do it all day.

Speaker 1:

As you were talking about. You love to write, and no doubt that you do, but you also are very creative, not only in costumes, but also with photo editing too, with Photoshop and stuff like that. So it's not only it's a fun read, it's just fun to look at, because we followed that up I think you followed that up with in defense of the visor.

Speaker 8:

Hard defense of the visor. Hard defense of the visor. Um, I'm still going on trial for defending the running visor.

Speaker 2:

I was gonna ask is the jury still deliberating on this one? Oh, no verdicts in comments from the jury.

Speaker 8:

On my instagram, everyone was in hard support of the running visor. Um, so we were at a camp in Idaho for North Face, actually literally the week after art camp, and one of my friends, north Face, just launched these visors, which I'm sad that I don't have it on right now, but they launched visors. Finally, and I was losing my mind how awesome, how stoked I was there was another one of my teammates that was pumped and then one of our other teammates was highly against the visor.

Speaker 8:

She was like, honestly, I will not be caught dead in a visor and I was like, oh my God, I have to defend the visor. So then me photoshopping my head on our local. You know how every location has their cheesy lawyer that you go to for car crashes and stuff.

Speaker 1:

Oh on TV, oh, heck yeah.

Speaker 8:

Ours is Frank Azar, the strong arm in Denver, and so I took my head and I very haphazardly photoshopped it on his body and he's like a hefty big dude. So that was fun, do so that was fun.

Speaker 1:

But the jury in my defense I think the jury has claimed that the running visor is not guilty of public indecency. This is very good news, and we may use part of this because Rise and Run is about to introduce a visor. We have hats. I got an idea, here we go, so once we get the visors made.

Speaker 2:

Uh, we need to schedule a um a photo shoot session with britney oh my god and you can be our spokesmodel for us.

Speaker 8:

I'm so in. I will, uh, rock a visor all day okay, I used to.

Speaker 1:

I can't anymore. It's not safe. We have no other protection, so we're stuck with the hat now, but that's okay, yeah, uh, it's the bottom line. Okay, yeah, because I don't know what I'd do if you took over. Anyway, colfax, out in Denver, colorado, you did your first race announcer gig. Yeah, tell us about it, please.

Speaker 8:

Oh my gosh, it was so much fun. So I feel like I'm exhausted because I'm like, oh yeah, in, like you're literally getting a glimpse into my life. It was like Sonoma bang I went to art camp, then I went straight to North Face camp, then I went literally that same exact week I um it was the Colfax Marathon weekend for race announcing. So, um, I have been so tired, like catching up after all of these things. But it's all been like amazing and wonderful. But I got asked to. I've been close with the Colfax marathon since I won it in 2017. That was um so 2017, I won the marathon, set the course record.

Speaker 1:

And that was.

Speaker 8:

Colfax always holds a special place in my heart because that was the first, was the first marathon I won, but that was just my, it was my race.

Speaker 8:

That it was like, sparked the belief in myself, that like oh my gosh like maybe I can do this, maybe, and I didn't even know what this means, um, like I would never looking back seven years, like I would never have ever guessed what my running would have turned into from not, but really it was like that one race and it was so special because I'm a born and raised Denver native, so just getting to be in my home city was amazing. So I've been in touch and loosely involved with Colfax since then. So they called and asked actually Cree Kelly, who is one of the announcers. He and the Colfax CEO Andrea called, I think in like January from Disney. Announcers. He, um, and the Colfax CEO Andrea called um, I think in like January from Disney. They were down there and they were like Brittany, would you consider race?

Speaker 1:

announcing for.

Speaker 8:

Colfax and I was like, yes, you just be on a stage with a microphone for hours, Like and yeah.

Speaker 1:

No, I think, yeah, I think it's, I think it's a match made in heaven. Oh yeah, perfect for you thanks it was.

Speaker 8:

It was so, so fun. Um, it was long days, so the I mean nothing compared to what they do at disney.

Speaker 8:

But we had the 5k on the day on saturday, which had the regular 5k, and then they had girls on the run 5k, um, and we started it like maybe 7.00 AM, um, but that was the coolest thing, watching all of these schools with their girls on the run, running clubs getting out. So it's all these little girls that you're just like, oh my gosh, you're just cheering them on Cause they're our next, they're our next generation of runners. So that was amazing. They're all in like two, twos and sparkles. And they was, they were just, were just my vibe. So that was the first day, and then the second day was the marathon. So got there at like 4 am and we wrapped at probably 1 pm, but I was a little bit nervous because I was like that's a long day.

Speaker 1:

It sure is.

Speaker 8:

By the end of it I was like we're done, like that's it, it's over.

Speaker 1:

Oh, wow.

Speaker 8:

It was just just went by, huh it was just amazing, like and um, my record got broken, which was amazing, yeah, um, getting to announce her coming through like that was just so cool, um, that is cool so I loved, I loved every second of it. So I'm like, oh my gosh, if, if there's more racing announcing gigs, I'm so in.

Speaker 1:

I got to believe it. Yeah, and again I just I wasn't there, of course, but I got to believe you're good at it. I had a chance to say hello to Cree Kelly one time Seems like a really nice guy and talk about veteran race announcer. He was a good guy to partner with for your first one, wasn't he?

Speaker 8:

Oh, legend, like Cree announced Colfax when I won, he was there for the Disney races, he was there for Quad Cities when I won that. So we've kind of been always crossing paths and it was. I mean, if there's somebody to learn from, it's Cree. He just has it dialed. He knows what he wants, he's, but he's so casual, he we had several calls leading up to announcing and he was like here's, here's the run of show, here's what we're going to be doing, here's what we're doing.

Speaker 8:

And it felt intimidating and he was like Brittany, at the end of the day, we are there to have fun, we're there to have energy for the crowd and we're there to just like be there with each other, and that's he. He really, really supported me that way. So, um, I felt lucky that I wasn't really thrown to the wolves, like I had Cree there the whole time, but he also just at several times he just vanished, cause I was just announcing at the finish and he just vanished and he let me run it, and so that was really cool and I was like that's a bold move to let me have the mic for that long.

Speaker 1:

He's a veteran. He knew what he was doing. He knew what he was doing and he knew you could handle it. Thanks, a veteran. He knew what he was doing. He knew what he was doing and he knew you could handle it, thanks, so here you go.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, I get it. That sounds great. It's my uh dream job.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I believe it. Now you. You had some runners. There also some runners that you coach yeah it was a great.

Speaker 8:

I had two runners that they did their very first marathons um. So that was cool.

Speaker 8:

My dad was there, so my dad yeah um, one of my best friends, my sister, my niece um, they all did the 10 killer, so that was awesome to get to announce them. Um, and then just the Denver running community. I'm sure you guys are the same, um, that it's just. The running world is tightening at the end of the day. So there's people that came through that I'm like, oh my gosh, I didn't know you were here, I haven't seen you. Um, so that was really cool, I guess, to get to see everybody what a what a great weekend I mean, isn't it like the saying is?

Speaker 7:

is that like one percent of the world has ran a marathon?

Speaker 8:

yeah, and that's just really something cool to think about, and your, your people did it and then just getting to announce people through you could see the emotions of people. You know. I think that's what I love. I love about the disney races, like you, like when I came to cheer last two years ago, whatever, 23, 23 I remember watching

Speaker 8:

people come through that finish line at the end you're like, oh my, you're so inspired. And it was the same here. Um, there was a woman on the 5k day that we announced through and it was a massive accomplishment for her and she just lost it and you could tell like that was, that was her goal, that was the start of something for her, so that was just so cool.

Speaker 1:

It is One of my favorite stories. I'm coming down Main Street second or third time. I've done Dopey, but you and Allie and I had seen each other at the start line. You were cheering that day and we'd seen each other at the start line. And when I go down Main Street and I don't know if I did it the first year, but I've done it every year since At some point I will go to the crowd and go random strangers. I may never see you again, but I want you to know I love you and I appreciate you're here and I do that and I said I love you all and I look to my right and I go, especially you. You're standing right there.

Speaker 5:

That's amazing it was really cool.

Speaker 1:

That is a phenomenal experience.

Speaker 8:

Now you're familiar with the Dopey races, I believe Loosely, Loosely familiar. Just a little bit.

Speaker 1:

I want to talk to Coach Charbonneau, and I want to talk to Coach Charbonneau on behalf of our friends who are listening now, especially those who have signed up for the Dopey Challenge for the first time. Let's talk to those people, coach. What are you going to say to them, the folks who have signed up for the first?

Speaker 8:

time Congratulations. That's the hardest part is pressing, submit and then realizing what you've done. You're like yeah and then you're like hang on a second when you break it down. You're like hold on, like this is actually a really long way to go, but gosh, we're coming up on six months, right.

Speaker 1:

So it's like yeah, time to start. The Galloway training plan starts in the 1st of July.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, like we're, we're getting into it. So, um, congratulations, I mean congratulations, that's like the number one thing I would say, no matter what, is like you've, you've taken a hard step to do something really hard.

Speaker 5:

Um. I also want to address um because there's a lot of people who are trying their new dopey or trying their first marathon Um. But I know you have some experience as well of DNFing an important race and you know like there's the training's about to start Um. Do you have any words of wisdom to people who are their first raise back after a DNF or they didn't finish Dopey and they're trying it again Totally?

Speaker 8:

Which, again, I think there maybe there's the second hardest thing to do is to put yourself back out there, because you can probably talk yourself out of it in a million ways, but the fact that you're choosing to do it again and go for it again is something to be celebrated. Um, and I think, um, I think, what I have done when I've DNF. So I DNF the Boston marathon on live TV, um, in 2019, I DNF um the world championship last year, um, so I've DNF some big ones, and I think the biggest thing I tell people with DNFs and I tell myself is that no one actually remembers, like you might be, like, oh my God, everyone's going to think that, um, why am I doing this again? Why are they doing this again? Truly, no one's going to remember, um, that that you DNF'd. I bet Um, and I think I like to evaluate, no matter if it's been a killer race or, um a DNF.

Speaker 8:

I always go back and I think, what, what would I adjust? What did I learn from that? Because every single race is a learning experience, good or bad. Um, the good, you're going to take what you like crushed, like I'm going to probably keep doing podcasts or like listening to podcasts, um, but I know I'm going to not stress myself out, um, and go out like a maniac early on because it's a world championships. You know you're going to learn so many things.

Speaker 8:

So I think, think about what you did in training before that. Maybe it's, maybe it's just little things that you need to dial, dial in. You know now what you're going to expect. Um, maybe it is time to hire a coach if you haven't, um, just any of those different things. But I think, go for, go for it. Like go, you have to, you have to get back out there.

Speaker 8:

And if that's a goal, I mean dopey is not an easy thing to do. So if you DNF dopey, I mean that's like that's a really hard thing to do. So it's it's not really a surprise if you didn't make it, because it's like that might take a couple of times. So I think, like, whatever the distance is, and maybe you're like, well, I DNF to half, it doesn't matter, it's, it's your dopey, it's your Colfax, that is what it is, and you just got to get back out there and just keep showing up for yourself and make sure you're keeping it fun for yourself and lean on the people that support you, cause there's so many people that are just cheering you on.

Speaker 1:

If I can one second here, if I can quote our friend Laura from the Netherlands, there's a reason they call it the dopey challenge. If it was easy, they call it the Dopey Challenge.

Speaker 8:

If it was easy.

Speaker 5:

They call it the.

Speaker 1:

Happy Challenge. I've never heard that. I think she made that up.

Speaker 8:

I love it Truly it would be like there would be so many more people that would do it. But it is stupid. It's a dumb thing to do Like 48 miles in and of itself is dumb. I'll say that, and that's my job. But doing it then breaking it up over four days adds another layer of dumb, but they just with a costume of this magic kingdom. So that's what. That's what makes it actually special.

Speaker 1:

All right, coach, I've got two nuts and bolts questions that we get from our friends all the time. We try to answer them, but you're going to be better at it. First, on our long runs why do we train slow to run fast?

Speaker 8:

Well, I always say that we train slow to run fast because you are you, if you ran fast all the time, you'd blow out Um. So thinking about um, like you want to save that. I always tell my runners like I never get to a 10 out of 10, ever until race day, um. So I think, like what you're really training for is those like middle miles where you're training to run a little bit slower, to practice being patient. You're always going to see that guy on the start of a marathon. I've been there where they just you're like, are we at the 5k? Like that's how fast.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 8:

I'm like at mile six and you're like, bro, I think we're going to have a much different day today. I think like it's practicing, being patient. It's also just you're building that time on feet, um. So think about like you're running all of your miles during the week, then you've got your long run, so you're getting all that time on feet. So then, come race day, you can go faster cause you've got, you're just going shorter distance, um. So I was just like I was just kind of advocate for time on feet, um, and then I like to pepper in um workouts and things every once in a while or like make it a progression long run, something like that. So, again, you're practicing that because, because of the way that training works, the other training cycles you're you're doing different adaptations that are happening behind the scenes. So, um, I also people like just trust the process, like the way that things are structured, how things are. You kind of just have to like trust that it works, even though it seems like it doesn't make sense in the moment.

Speaker 1:

All right, very good, thank you, all right. Friends who are getting ready for your first marathon, or first dopey, pay attention. Ok, those are wise words and they make a lot of sense, and they're going to make more sense to you as we go along and we'll talk about them again. All right, one more nuts and bolts question that we get every year, do I? I'm going, I'm training for the marathon Now. In the Jeff Galloway plan, we go out to 26 miles in our training to 26 miles in our training.

Speaker 8:

Do I have to go to 26 miles? Nope, um, I actually don't build my runners up. Usually I build them up to 20. Um, in some cases I might do 22. Um, but I and I can't remember how Jeff can remember how he structures it. But what helps me in my training? So I never get in any of my distances. I never get to um race distance.

Speaker 8:

Um, for a few reasons. Um, it's just like again, you've got the whole week of mileage on your legs going into that. So, um, there's that aspect. And then, um, I also kind of like to just save that, like save that special distance for race day. Um, even if I've run it before, it's just like there's something special about saving that. Um, and then I have my runners practice the um, we'll practice stacking the multiple days in a row. That I feel like um is more mentally training. Like that you don't have to go the full distance.

Speaker 8:

But some people, I think one of the biggest things that I think about with my training and that I try to help my runners with is um, okay, you're at the starting line of race day. What do you feel like? Is you're going to feel most confident going into race day knowing you've done so. For me sometimes it's like if I've got a massive trail run or something and I've got the big climbs, I know I'm going to be more confident knowing I've done a lot of big climbs.

Speaker 8:

If you and somebody I coached last year for Dopey, she was just really nervous about the stacking the days, so we did several versions of that but didn't go all the way up, because you also don't want to go sometimes and again, this is different training, different, different strokes, different folks. Sometimes and again, this is different training, different, different strokes, different folks. Um, but the other risk you run if sometimes you do build up to that full distance is then you've got a lot to recover from. So it's like kind of like you're doing a little bit more breakdown than is necessary for the buildup. But if that is going to help build your confidence, if you're like I got to get there, I need to know that that, yes, I 100% can do this distance, then I think like you just got to trust and you got to work on the things that you feel like are really going to build your confidence the most going into race day.

Speaker 1:

Okay, outstanding. And that again, I'm not speaking for Jeff, but I've spoken with him so many times. That's one of his big selling points. Yeah, if you come here and you've done this, you know that you're able to do it. So I take some of the anxiety away Totally.

Speaker 2:

At the beginning, yeah, Brittany, there's another aspect of coaching that I want to discuss with you, and the reason why I love and respect you so much is because you introduced a very important phrase not only into my running career, but also just into my life as well, and that is the concept of PR and fun, and I know we have chatted previously on you know, whether it's tonight or previous episodes about whether you're tackling dopey or goofy or your first marathon or a first of anything it's. There are going to be hard times, but I think you are a shining example of when the times do get tough, whether it's during the race itself or it's in the training. You have found ways to make sure that you're enjoying what you are doing to help you get through. You know the those troubled waters as a coach who excels in PR and fun. What can you tell our listeners, as we're, you know, less than two weeks away from you know, training for marathon weekend.

Speaker 8:

That means a lot. Thank you, um, I feel like I pride myself in that, but I feel like I walk the walk with that. I I mean I won't lie Like, like cupcakes and rainbows, like I want it to be, but I get to choose how many sprinkles I have in that day, and you know all of that that. But I think, for people going into it, and something that I try to help my athletes with, is like you have to practice that fun throughout training. You're not just going to show up like and expect it to magically happen on race day. Because there's so many nerves on race day. There's different factors, maybe that's weather, maybe that's corrals. I mean, I have runners that weren't expecting to be in certain corrals that they were in at Disney, so we had to adjust and I think just learning throughout training to stay flexible is massive. So staying flexible, getting out during tough conditions, whatever you can do to build your confidence, but then also like how can you make that playful? So you have to practice being playful, which sounds like work, but it's like, okay, like I got to go practice listening to a banger of a playlist on this hard workout I'm in Um, or like today I have to dress like a stack of pancakes for this, like, okay, um, not being afraid to um, choose what's fun for you. I have a runner who is training for dopey. Actually, he started a little bit early, just kind of getting some base work in, and he, um, he writes in his training plan his song of the day every single day, and some days, like, some days, it's like a stormy song and it's like not great, but that's kind of capturing his journey. So I think, however, you can practice playing in your training and then capturing it. I think that that's.

Speaker 8:

I'm a collector. I feel like I'm a mental hoarder, so I like to and that's maybe where my pennies come in is I like to collect things and I like to look back and see what I've done, because that also like starts to snowball these other ideas where you're like I'll just try running, um to different colored things today, and maybe you're like, oh, next week I can run to different fast food places that I see, or, um, I don't know. You know like, if there's ways to make things creative, I feel like, but it's endless. So I think, just practicing that, so that way you are, you're flexing that muscle, so you're ready to do that in on race day as well.

Speaker 1:

Awesome. Yeah, I don't know if you invented the phrase PR and fun, but I think you're the first one most of us heard it from, and now we hear it all over the place.

Speaker 8:

Awesome. I'm so glad. Who knows where it actually came from. I don't know if I've mentioned it, but it's so important to protect. You have to protect what you love and what your goals are, and I just think that there's I. I'm like I will go to the end of the earth saying that it's so possible to do hard things, but have fun doing hard things. So, um, and it's supposed to be hard, otherwise it would be the happy challenge.

So, brittany, before we we close out this interview and you get the plug all the wonderful things that you are associated with I have one really important question to ask you. You know for those of you that know Brittany's story about, you know winning dopey all those years ago. You know we know she did it in costume and two of your four costumes were related to inside out, with joy and bing bong, oh my gosh. So I gotta know how excited are you for the release of inside?

Speaker 8:

out. You don't understand I. It has been on my calendar for months. It's like on the jasmine and I shared calendar. It says inside out too, in all caps. Um, I just listened to amy poehler an interview with her today. I'm losing my mind. Um, also because, uh, the new characters, especially anxiety. I'm like, oh, my god, that's me, that's me britney, you don't think we know you.

Speaker 1:

If you will recall, the last time you were with us, we had to cut this short because you had to go see barbie for the third time that's right oh my god I forgot about that.

Speaker 8:

Uh, yeah, I think I'm like part of me is like well, I still have my costume and my wig as joy, like I should probably wear that to inside out there you go.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that'd be great.

Speaker 8:

Like Barbie. I'm pretty confident that this won't be my only in theater viewing. So I'm like maybe I do joy this time and then I do anxiety next. Next time I see it Like I did regular Barbie and then weird Barbie. So, yes, I like to answer your question, greg. I'm out like so, so excited.

We had a hard time telling them, I think as long as we see pictures, I think that's a great idea.

I finally got my website updated um I didn't even know that yeah, I spent some time turns, had uh, not updated it since 2020, um, which a lot has changed in 2020. Um, also, I would say this so that was actually a really nice exercise for me to do. So I, um, I feel like I just like got behind on it or I was like I don't know Um, why do I need a website for? But for me I have a section that is that actually I did. So I updated it, kind of going into Sonoma and just like early season this season and I went through and I updated all of my races that I've done and how I've done in them and I was like oh, I'm actually pretty good at this.

I just like I think like you get in your brain sometimes, like you're always thinking about the next thing, or like like I, yeah, I won this, but like I didn't win this, or you know just all those things that, um, I forgot about and I like was like dude, and I think that's kind of what gave me a lot of confidence going into the start of the season is like no, I've done a lot. Like I cause I get and I have severe imposter syndrome and, um, but going back through I was like those aren't all flukes, like those aren't all sentences. Um, so I think, if you are someone that struggles with that too, um, go back through your training, go back through all of those things and collect what you've done to prove to yourself, like, be your own defense attorney of like, no, like you are, you're wrong, you are good at this, or you've done more than you think. The difference between her and us is she's just a whole lot better at it. But the attitude, I understand the attitude and I understand what she's talking about and I do, and I hope our friends who listen pick up on that too, because those gems are, even even though there's no way we can do what Brittany does, we can have Brittany's attitude Absolutely and follow her lead. So I love it.

Yeah, and we do a pretty daggum good job at that. We do when we get to Disney, we do a really good job of it. Hey, it was global Running Day last week and, john, you put together some quotes from folks who posted to our social sites, yeah.

So I asked like, why do you run, you know, and all that stuff? We got some good quotes. We got a lot of quotes. I'm not going to read them all, but a couple of them here that I thought were really interesting. One I'm not going to read them all, but a couple of them here that I thought were really interesting. One of them from CJ. Running literally helped me conquer a number of things, including low self-esteem, anxiety, moderate depression and acid reflux. So thankful that I'm inspired by my good friends that try out running. I'm about a year in and I cannot imagine running my first marathon this January. Cool Love that One from our friend Michelle. The community really helps me feel like I belong.

Another one that I really like is Amy. I run to continuously prove to myself I can set goals and achieve them. It's a way of making little gains and confidence with her ADHD. Good for you, amy. The other one I think is really great I think we've probably all done this one too from our friend Valeria, because when I see a sign on the road I say I can run that.

Oh, yeah, yeah, I know what she means.

Yeah, and from Heather, running has taught me that I can do anything if I put the work in. I had three open heart surgeries before I was two years old. Running and just being active is probably the best thing I can do for my heart Awesome.

Awesome and the beginning part of that. You can do anything if you put in the work. That's going to be our mantra come June and July when we talk about do the training, do the training, do the training. That's going to make for the fun weekend, but we'll back off on that for now. Talking about friends, a couple of updates. Our friend Heather, who had some big-time surgery early this year, is back to training. Heather is a wheelchair athlete and she's a push rim. She's back out there on the road. I think that's exciting.

Our friend Leslie from the Rundope family has had a meniscus surgery on her knee this week. Wish you the best, leslie. Look forward to seeing you at Wine and Dine because I know she'll be there. I know she will. A quick pup date. I'm just going to gloss over this. It's going very well. Our friend Alec at Kauai and Pizza Apparel is has just been terrific and helping out and making modifications as we go along. She is now offering, in addition to the unisex shirt, a women's version of the shirt. Again, you don't have to order it, but it's a great deal. Some of the questions we're getting is oh, there's already 100 people, we don't care, we don't care if we have 500 people Somebody already took this name we don't care. We don't care if we have seven rovers, we don't care, we just want to see you there and we think it's going to be fun. Make your own name up. Make your own, absolutely. I think it's going to be fun. Make your own name up, make your own Absolutely, absolutely. Little news on the merchandise front. We are making progress there. We expect to be up and running in. I'm not going to give a date, but pretty soon we'll be looking at pre-orders for shirts. We're looking at as you'll hear when we talk with Brittany we're looking at offering a visor here, but more details on that soon.

Upcoming episodes episode 143. Jonathan Siebert will be with us. Jonathan is a very engaging young fellow. You may have seen on Facebook and Instagram he suffers from Apert's disease or syndrome, I don't know, but a lot of obstacles has been. I should have looked it up and I talked to Jonathan earlier tonight, but a lot of obstacles have been thrown into it in his way. He is an extremely inspirational guy, upbeat. Sure, yeah. So Lindsay, I had the opportunity to meet her during Dapper Day in Epcot at Springtime Surprise. But what we're really excited to chat with her about is, I mean, obviously she's a huge run Disney fanatic. But she used to have a career in television. She was a news reporter for I can't remember what market exactly, but so she's got that cool background. So the TV geek in me is going to nerd out about that, because I always thought I was gonna have a career in news as well. But what's amazing about her is she is a huge world traveler. Just in the last two weeks she was in China on a massive trip, got to see both cast Disney castles in China and then was like home for like I don't know two, three days and then was over in Europe to go see the Taylor Swift concert. So she really does know how to literally travel the World Showcase. So we're really excited to talk to her about not only her running journey but also her travel journey as well too.

In addition, I've mentioned that our Magic Bound travel friends will be with us in one of those episodes and Tom from Stoked Metabolic Training will be with us in the other and I can't remember who I invited for which week. So we'll all be surprised when they show up. Gosh, I hope they don't show up together at the same time, although that could be fun. That would be fun. Speaking of fun, it's time for the race report. Let us begin on Saturday Up in Canada, wentworth, nova Scotia A day in Wentworth.

Speaker 1:

We had a couple runners up there. This is a 24-hour trail race with a four and a half kilometer loop. Now, lori was there. Lori's original goal was to run 50k. She met that before suppertime so she thought why not do two more loops to surpass 60K to represent her age? So she did. Then she still got time.

Speaker 1:

She's sitting around talking with run club friends and one of them says hey, you know five more loops, which is, you know, it's another 22 and a half kilometers, that's another half marathon plus. Anyway, five more loops give the equivalent of more than two marathons. So she sets her alarm for 345, knocks the five loops out and finishes basically a double marathon, finished with a distance of 85 and a half kilometers. Pretty darn good. No metal, 85 kilometers, no metal, no shirt. One lost big toenail, big blister, but proud to call herself an ultra marathoner. And that is a distance pr for lori. Wonderful job. L RL Murray was there, finished 99 kilometers in 24 hours and then took a walk to make it an unofficial 100 kilometer 24 hour period, or maybe the 24 hour plus. Again, a distance PR for RL. Outstanding, both of you. Congratulations. Again, a distance PR for RL. Outstanding Both of you congratulations.

Speaker 3:

In Portland Maine we had the Shipyard Old Port Half Marathon and 5K this weekend. Kate and Steve did the half, brenda did the 5K. Steve, everything was going well despite hills for a mostly flat course. Highlight for me was finding his wife, brenda, finishing up on the 5K portion of the course. The two events were shared. They run together. She was around mile three, he was around mile eight, but it was just enough push to keep him refocused and finishing strong. Brenda had a PR goal in mind, but she found some friends on the course and stay at the party pace in the back of the pack.

Speaker 1:

Sounds like they both had fun. Yep, move out to Washington state, the evergreen half in Snohomish. Vanessa highly recommends this one says the courses along the centennial trail, which is largely shaded. That can be nice at this time of year, just beautiful, kind of course, where you want to forget about PRs and just Trail which is largely shaded. Vanessa really enjoyed this one. Definitely one to repeat. But, john, they had no bananas at the end. She seemed very upset by that.

Okay, in New York city, the master car, new York mini 10 K. That's the woman's only race. It started like in 1972 for the name after the mini skirt. Yeah, our friends. Grace was there, she she did a negative split and got to enjoy the crowds that came out. This race feels like a celebration of women running to her. She's also glad when she's able to run run it. One of the favorite parts of running this race is seeing the crazy legs runners who have run the event 15 plus times out there on the course. You could spot them because they have second bibs that read number, number of finishes and counting.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. That's, that's great, that's a cool idea.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, disney for the, for the perfects.

Speaker 1:

Well, yeah, that's. That's a topic for another time, but that's a pretty neat idea.

Speaker 3:

Jessica. Jessica was also there. It was a great event, well supported, finished with a six minute PR. Supported, finished with a six minute pr. Her three and a half year old daughter ran together. We crossed the, we crossed hand in hand. The volunteer put the medal on her and I'm not sure if I'm getting it back. She said to my husband wow, I never thought I'd run a race, but look, let me go, I got a medal yeah, she's not getting it back yeah, you have to run it again to get another medal and the photos are adorable and then me, and then Megan was there.

Speaker 3:

She PR'd a race, two races down, seven races to go to qualify for New York City 2025. Good luck.

Speaker 1:

Okay. The New York City Mini In Philadelphia. The half sour, half kraut run In Pennypack Park. Kristen did this one. She said there are some hills. The hills were short but they're pretty steep. Some trails. She trained hard for this one. Finished with a PR of 223. Said she walked the hills and that let her save the energy, that she felt really good and was able to push the last three miles. Cold watermelon at the finish for this one. I think you know if you can't have bananas. I mean I almost think cold watermelon ought to be a law. That is the best when you're finishing a race.

Speaker 3:

I can see that In Newport, ritchie, florida, the RAP River Run 5K. Laura Ann ran that it's the third time running this one. It was a very hot and humid morning. She did a run, walk, run 5K with a few friends besides the beautiful Cote River. The race had great race support and it raised $1.3 million for the girls' runaway house in the area $1.3 million.

Speaker 1:

That's huge. That's million, that's huge. That's huge, that's huge. In Orlando, a special event the Community Rainbow Run 4.9K, in memory of those who lost their lives at the Pulse Nightclub A few years back. It's been five or six years, I don't know how many years it's been now, but it's been a little while. New route this year for this run. It was an out and back. It turned around right at the nightclub memorial. It was hot and I'm here to tell you it was hot this weekend in Central Florida.

Speaker 1:

Jessica was there first time running this event. Definitely going to do it again, but she wants to check in way earlier than she did this time. The lines were long, they kept moving, but she wants to get there earlier. Great turnout, lots of rainbows and glitter. Florida did the weather thing even at 8 am. Nonetheless, jessica managed to PR. Patrick. Patrick agrees. It's an awesome event for the community. First, and maybe only 4.9k, so there's PR right there there. Tracy did it. This was Tracy's fourth year running this event and Monica did it. Great race for a great cause. Plans on doing this as long as they have it. And it's Pride Month, where we get to go celebrate and remember those who can no longer celebrate with us.

Speaker 3:

Eagle, Idaho, the Treasure Valley Rescue Run 10K. Rosie ran that one. Most of the rate was shaded and paved and there were some trail running spots that caught her off guard. She kept her head down and got a PR for the 10K. Congratulations. Pr for the 10K Congratulations.

Good job. Atlanta, Indiana Didn't know there was one Callie ran the BEX 5K in Atlanta, Indiana.

Speaker 3:

Mackinac Island Lilac Festival 10K Run Walk in Michigan. Tracy ran that. It's a virtual part of the Mackinac Island Trio of Races Finished virtually Plans to do it next series virtually, then run the final race in person. Right, there are three of them.

Speaker 1:

She's doing. The first two virtual and the third one live In Houston, texas, the Lemonade Dash. We had a bunch of folks there. Brandy was there. Great-looking outfit, brandy, great photos there. I'm not sure how you managed to run with the bow you had on top of your head. The drag must have been tremendous, but she did a good job. Saw a couple of other rise and runners out there. They may have been rachel, amy, jen and or kim, who ran this one together. Said it was flat, hot and human. Uh, again, they mentioned running into some other run disney fans during the race. Looking forward to finish finishing the rest of this race series.

In the Palmer Park 8K in Detroit, Michigan, our friend Christy ran that it's her first ever 8K, so automatic PR Ran through Detroit's oldest indigenous forest where the trees were so thick she had to remove her sunglasses. All right, let's wrap up Saturday with the 5k trail race at Flanders Nature Center in Woodbury, connecticut. Sue loved this trail run. This is number 156 for Sue, 13 to go in chasing the 169 in Connecticut. Let's move to Sunday and go to Asheville, north Carolina, where they ran the RAD River Arts District Half Marathon, and our friend Mary Beth is here with us in the Race Report Spotlight to tell us all about it. Hi, mary Beth, hi, how are you doing this evening?

I am doing well, thank you.

Good to know Is it warm in North Carolina this time of year? I reckon it is.

Speaker 4:

It is actually.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'll bet it is. I'll bet it is. Well, I mean, that's hey, you live in the South, darling right, that's true, I enjoy it, but sometimes it gets pretty steamy. Okay, well, we'll talk about the race. I'm anxious to hear about it, but I always love kicking off, finding a little bit more about our friends, especially how you got started into running.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, when I turned 30, I decided I wanted to start doing things. That scared me, and running was one of those. But I saw one of my friends do the Princess Half Marathon in 2022, I believe and had a tutu on and it looked like the best time. So I was like I have to do that and then and then I signed up for um. Princess 2023 was my first half marathon and first experience and it's been amazing ever since.

Speaker 1:

It has it. That was your first half. Was that your first organized run? You started out with a half. Yes, wow, that's, that's cool. That's cool. Yeah, that's a nice distance. I'm sure you trained for it, at least a bit.

Speaker 6:

I did.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and you made it and you had fun. And here you are, yes, and now you're hooked and you're part of the Rise and Run family and that's really cool. We like that.

Speaker 4:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

Okay, well, relatively recently, then it's so much fun. You know, John, it's fun to talk to folks about how they got started. We got people who have been running since they were teenagers. We got people who picked it up in adulthood. The one we haven't heard for a while is a significant other got them into it. I used to get that all the time. Well, I met this girl or I met this guy, but you and you're an example of something I talk about all the time. You never know who you're going to motivate, because somebody motivated you without outwardly trying to do it. You just said, hey, that looks pretty cool, I want to do that. Yeah, absolutely yeah. So let's talk about the race in Asheville this weekend. How'd it go?

Speaker 4:

It was awesome. I will say, outside of Disney races, it might be one of my favorite races I have done.

Speaker 1:

Wow.

Speaker 4:

Between spectators and the volunteers. It was just a wonderful experience all around.

Speaker 1:

That's great. You had the city turned out a little bit for it. Huh, that's neat.

Speaker 4:

They did, it was beautiful. You started right almost in the heart of downtown Asheville, and then it took you all the way out to the River Arts District, right along I think it was the French Broad River, which was beautiful. It was pretty overcast, which was beautiful. Um, it was pretty overcast, um, which was great for running, but it was on the greenway as well, um, and it was a flat course.

Speaker 1:

Um, okay, okay.

Speaker 4:

There's a couple rolling Hills and then immediately after um, you were going negative, um negative in your elevation and then or staying pretty flat. So it was an awesome course, good course.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the Greenway you called it. Is that a path, or what is that?

Speaker 4:

Yeah, it basically kind of wraps next to the French Broad River. They have a bunch of like soccer fields and different types all over and there was so many people out on Sunday so you can tell that area does a lot in the community.

Speaker 1:

Nice recreational area. Yeah, pretty cool. I did one run in Charlotte, it was not flat. One run in Charlotte, it was not flat. So I'm glad to hear that this one at least was flat, because I know North Carolina can get a little hilly, but that sounds great. What kind of post-race activities did they have?

Speaker 4:

They had a wonderful sign that said beer, massages and everything this way, so they had so many tents of where you could get after massages. The post beer was at High Wire, which is the local brewery in Asheville. They had a live band like a little mini expo afterwards with a bunch of vendors, so it was a really good time after.

Speaker 1:

Sounds good, recommended as a destination race for our friends.

Speaker 4:

I would. I definitely want to race this one again.

Speaker 1:

Good for you. I didn't see, so I'm going to ask any PRs this weekend.

Speaker 4:

It wasn't a PR, but it was my seventh half marathon, so it's always a good time when you can finish a half marathon.

I talked over you. Did you say your second or? My seventh, Seventh, that's what I thought you said. Yeah, you're getting up there. Yes, that's a good distance, that half marathon.

What's on the calendar for you next, Mary?

Beth, I think I'm going to just try focusing on dopey training, because that will be my next run. Disney adventure.

Okay, okay, you will. You will not be alone. There are several people who will or have done that in the past and it can be done. Yeah, I mean absolutely, it can be done. I have every confidence in you. My first marathon was dopey.

Yeah, I hear that and I'm super excited because Run Disney is such an amazing community. I found new friends and we kind of created our own little like group. We're calling each other Team Sushi Boat because we want to do the XCOT Sushi Boat After Marathon.

Going from Mary Beth to Mary Jo, mary Jo ran in Claremont Florida the Advent Health Cool Summer Morning Series. This is run number one. It's a 5k. There is nothing cool about the summer mornings in Claremont Florida. Nevertheless, mary Jo says this is a nice course, even if it was a hot one out there. It was hot this weekend. She took it easy, enjoyed being at a race, since her training has been kind of non-existent to this point. Good post-race snacks got to like that Hot dogs and watermelon. Watermelon's a wonderful post-race treat Hot dogs and watermelon. Felt like summer. Loved the medal. Didn't love the hill so much. There's a hill in Claremont Florida, I believe you, but she had to go up it afterwards. I think she actually went up this hill on the way back to her car. She'll be back in July, the July weekend, for race number two in the series. John, this next race here. Can you see it on your sheet? Whoever put it in didn't tell me where it was.

Oh, that's Fitzgerald's 5K Lager Run I did Sunday night in Glen Ridge, new Jersey. Oh, you did it, I did it.

I did it. Oh, okay, because it says larger run here, it doesn't say Lager Run.

It's a run they have in Glen Ridge every year. It's kind of weird. I run these streets all the time, but I don't run them in that direction. Oh, so it seemed like a totally different road I was on, which I thought was pretty cool. It was a fun 5K running through Glen Ridge. After the race there's no medals. You got a nice race shirt, no medals. But after the race the Hoboken Brewery was there. They gave us two free beers with your race registration and pretzels from the Philadelphia Pretzel Company. Okay, but you know what would have been really good with those pretzels from the philadelphia pretzel company? Okay, but you know what would have been really good with those pretzels nacho cheese nacho.

Oh yeah, were they larger beers they're larger beers.

Speaker 2:

They were like yeah, they're larger beers yeah, here's the part I'm confused by philadelphia pretzel factory was in north jersey they're all over the place okay, yeah they're like a franchise now I mean yeah, I mean I know they franchised out. But like I mean I I mean you guys have your own patented, um, you know soft pretzels that get you know sold off of you know carts in new york city. So I figured, you know, if there's gonna be a pretzel it's gonna be something like that, not not the philadelphia ones.

But just those long ones, right.

Yeah, yeah, yeah Okay.

They're perfect.

All right, good stuff, john, glad you're out there having a good time. Having a large time, that's good Large time, yep, I'm happy about that. Hey, let's go over to the UK. Ran the Bladen races, a point-to-point from Newcastle to Bladen. This route is basically it's a 5.8 miler. It's based on a song that Andy quoted in his Facebook post. It's really cool, worth looking for. Andrew is his first name, andrew Spores. Look for his post. I'm not going to try to read it. It's written in a dialect but it's really kind of neat. And again, the traditions in the UK are pretty cool. So this is a neat race. By the way, as a 5.8 mile run, this is a PB for Andy.

Great atmosphere from start to finish. The event attracts a lot of running clubs, a lot of fast runners. You run along the banks of the River Tyne. No wind that evening, perfectly still Great conditions for a summer run. Looks like it was fun, looks like it was interesting. But I'm really interested to read about andy's run next week. I am offering no spoilers. We went from mary beth to mary jo. Let's go from andy to andy.

Speaker 1:

Another andy, this one in rutland, vermont, ran the Crowley Brothers Memorial 10K, 47th annual event. A variety of points. Point races, different distances, started in different parts of Proctor Vermont, all finished in beautiful downtown Rutland where they had a fantastic hot breakfast waiting for the finishers. Small race. But despite the fact that it was a small race and I mean like 30 or 40 people in the 10k one of them was American racing legend Bill Rogers running the 10k. That's pretty cool, andy running a race with Bill Rogers on monday. Just yesterday, the new york state parks summer run series, the heckscher park, five miler in long island.

Megan, first race in the series. The series. The race is run on monday. This one was, as mentioned, a five miler. Megan had her brother, sean, who's in high school, sign up for the series with her. That's pretty cool. This was Sean's longest run ever. Sean, this PR bell is for you.

A couple quick mentions Mandy Mandy finished her Disney virtual Waffle 5K. Finished her Disney virtual waffle 5k. Mary did a virtual half marathon. This one's worth mentioning. She did it in the vicinity of Mount McKinley in Alaska. That's a long commute, very nice.

Speaker 1:

Mary and Tim finished a five mile race this morning in one hour eight. Well, not this morning. Earlier in the week His goal was an hour and a half. So finishing in an hour eight. Tim was pretty happy. Nice job, tim, nice job everyone. Congratulations to all of our runners this weekend. All right, my friends, and if you run, you know you are our friend. It's been a blast. We knew it would as soon as Brittany said she would join us, so that was fun. Exciting times are coming, gang. We're not too far away from getting into the training for those Walt Disney World fall events. No Zoom this week. We'll be back on Zoom next week. If you can find the time, please drop in and visit us. Those are always fun. We typically stay on. I typically kind of throw everybody out about an hour and a half into it. So it's a good time.
