Rise and Run

137: The Official Guide to runDisney With Author Scott Douglas

May 09, 2024 The RDMTeam Season 4 Episode 137

Stride into the world of runDisney in our latest episode as we hit the ground running with Scott Douglas, author of, "runDisney: The Official Guide to Racing Around the Parks." Scott's book will transport you through a runner's lens to the most magical races on earth. From starting a running plan to a tour of runDisney medals, this guide covers all of the topics that will help runDisney runners, both veterans and novices.

Just as we were lamenting the end of a wonderful race season and wondering what we'd do to fill the time until our next race, our training plans started back up! That's right, if you are running at Disneyland in September, the Galloway training plan has begun. The gang chats a bit about training in general and how our training is getting started for this upcoming season. We even learn that one of the gang is "getting Jacked!"

Although it ended a few weeks ago, we finally found the time to visit with our friends Rob, Aime, Katie and Mark from the UK who completed the London Marathon. And that was just the beginning of a big race report. The Rise and Run family was very active throughout the USA, Canada, and England this week. Major events included the Flying Pig in Cincinnati, the Pittsburgh Marathon, the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia, and the Indy Mini at the famed Indianapolis 500 race track.

We close this episode with heartfelt thanks for the camaraderie shared on the pavement and an open invitation for you to lace up and join us at future runDisney events. Until our paths cross at the next race, we're here to keep you company on your run, infusing each step with encouragement and a touch of Disney magic.

Speaker 3:

Oh wait now I see I got that. That took a while, didn't it, Jack? What you guys don't know is we said this exact same joke about 20 minutes ago.

Speaker 6:

I walked away. I walked away because I was really hungry.

Speaker 5:

I hadn't eaten dinner yet it's okay, it's all good. April, thank you so much for joining us. We appreciate it. Thank you to all of our Patreons. We appreciate your support. Speaking of support, the Rise and Run podcast is sponsored by our friends at Magic Bound Travel. Hey, mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party. Event dates have been announced. Tickets go on sale this week. Actually, it's going to be the day after release. Release day, may 9 for us. Tickets if you're staying at a Disney resort go on sale May 8, may 15 for everyone else. Your agent can help you securing those tickets.

Speaker 3:

And if you have not seen the article that came out like two days ago about Mickey's Not so Scary, they've added a couple of new things. First of all, Minnie and Mickey are getting brand new outfits, which I think is big news. Okay, because they've been in the same costume for years, so they're getting upgrade. I'm excited for them. Um, also, they've said that you have more opportunities to meet villains, and you guys know me, so I love villains, and I don't know what that means, but I'm all for more villains.

Speaker 6:

But you're anxious to find out.

Speaker 3:

I'm anxious to find out. And then also they're doing a couple like a new dance show based on the Descendants. I don't really know much about that. Yeah, it's Descendants. The Rise of Red, which is the film coming to. Disney Plus and so there's a dance party that's inspired by the film that's going to be in Tomorrowland, which I think it'd be cool to have the Descendants characters there. I know they're really big with like under 20 year olds, so I was going to say so I need to bring my dancing shoes. Oh, yeah, totally.

Speaker 5:

Bob, yeah, totally, that would be worth the price of admission, I promise you.

Speaker 3:

But I think one of the biggest things that everybody's talking about is you get to meet Bruno, but we don't talk about Bruno. We don't talk about Bruno, but we're going to get to meet him in person. I love it. So, anyway, I'm real excited.

Speaker 6:

You guys. One of these years, I promise you, I'm going to be a pirate in the parade. I got a call back but wasn't able to make it. Oh no, you are, are you? Yeah, this is my second. It would have been my second invite to get called back, that'd be cool Jack yeah you couldn't do it this time, that would be awesome don't they twirl things? You were a baton twirler, right no, I spun rifle and I spun flag. That's what.

Speaker 1:

I meant I was picturing you spun things spun things, yes, but till next year.

Speaker 6:

You guys, I was picturing you spun things, yeah, spun things, yes, yeah, but until next year.

Speaker 5:

You guys All right, well, cool, cool. Hey, listen back to it If you're interested in going, especially if you're going for wine and dine. Half marathon weekend. There are party nights on October 29th and, of course, october 31st. Party nights on October 29th and, of course, october 31st. I sent a note to my agent, missy, yesterday asking to see if she could get Becky and I some tickets for the 31st. We have some other Rise and Run friends who are going. We're looking forward to that.

Speaker 5:

Now out on the West Coast the Oogie Boogie Party event dates have been announced, but they still don't have ticket sale dates. They sell out much faster than Mickey's, not so Scary. So if you're interested now, there aren't any dates that line up perfectly with the race weekend, but you got the Tuesday September 3rd and then Tuesday September 10th are potential for that. Now, if you haven't booked a hotel yet, you got to get going. The Disneyland area hotels are filling up. Magic Bound has about 30 rooms at three different hotels, ranging from $216 a night and sleeps four up to $291 a night sleeps six. They're all within a short walking distance of the start of the race. If you want to book one, they're requiring that you also purchase a minimum three-day ticket through Magic Bound Travel. That's, magicboundtravelcom is the website. Lots of important information there, so check them out, hey.

Speaker 5:

Training schedules. Remember how we just finished a race season? Well, training for the Disneyland weekend has begun. It actually started the day that we're recording this and if you're running the half or the challenge, you got a long run on this weekend, training week number one. The long run is three miles. Now, if that sounds long to you because you're new to it, that's cool. Take it easy. Remember it's a long run. You can go at a nice easy pace. If it sounds really easy to you because you've been training for a long time, good for you. Just enjoy it, because the numbers grow real fast. But I'm excited to see numbers on the training schedule again. I was going to miss them. But speaking of training gang, how are we doing? How?

Speaker 3:

are we doing in our training, getting ready for whatever we're getting ready for? Well, I have some exciting news I got a treadmill for my house. Um, I got a treadmill for my house and, as of sunday, I did my first run on it, which means it's my first run since disneyland oh, wow, okay yeah, um, and it was actually so.

Speaker 3:

So I mean, y'all know my story about burnout and all that kind of stuff, and I guess about three weeks ago two weeks ago, let's say two weeks ago, so it doesn't sound so bad I had the thought cross my brain of like, hmm, it might be nice to go on a run. I didn't do it, but I had the thought, which is halfway there. That's the first step.

Speaker 5:

Did you put that in your training log? Thought about running.

Speaker 3:

Thought about it. But yeah, now we have the treadmill inside, which means I have no excuse of no one watched, no one able to watch Scooby, so I can't go work out. Um, and he had. Side note, my puppy has had no like, he has barely even come in here. Kevin and I have both done runs and he was like not phased at all. Um, which is progress for sure, um, so, yeah, so now I'm starting slow. Um, I did a really cool um, and that's just me talking about my treadmill. So you have the app and it's connected to ifit and if you do the training videos, it automatically adjusts the treadmill speed and incline for you.

Speaker 5:

You don't have to press any buttons. That's cool. I've heard of that. That sounds pretty neat.

Speaker 3:

It was mind-boggling. That's awesome. But yeah, and like you know, she said we're going to add incline and then it automatically went up to 3%. I was like whoa.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

So anyway, I'm a fan. So far, pure disney magic. I know, disney magic sprinkle a little pixie dust, um.

Speaker 6:

So next run is scheduled for tomorrow night good for you proud of you so um, I will say um the muscles by tom is starting to notice some things.

Speaker 5:

I was going to say something.

Speaker 7:

We got video here. You see those delts popping I know.

Speaker 6:

And then my triceps are like I know you guys can't see it, but there you go. You guys can't see that, but imagine the you know. And well, I'm pretty proud of myself.

Speaker 7:

She's doing a pose down for us guys. You gotta see this I know.

Speaker 6:

Uh, last time I saw tom during the 10 miler, briefly I we were chatting, and then I did a video with him the following week and he's like yeah, I noticed your triceps. I was like I know it's got to feel good.

Speaker 5:

now, I'm not joking on you that If he says something like that, that would make me feel good.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, so I feel pretty good about that. But my main thing that I'm trying to figure out right now is right now I just got another job, so currently I do three jobs plus an internship, plus, obviously, hanging out with you guys on Tuesday nights is what I look forward to. So it's just trying to find a balance and I'm learning that the only way that I can do everything is if I have to wake up really early. Yeah, by 2 30 um no, uh, 5, 5, 30, 5, 40 am is my wake up call.

Speaker 6:

But mondays, because of the way the workouts are set on the app, that tom has me do. So if you do his program, everything you can see on the app and then you can send videos for him so you can see if you're doing it right or whatnot. He's very communicative, um, but that workout that first monday is always like the longest one out of all the other ones. So I was just trying to figure out my work schedule and how that goes. But you know, ch know, chris Twiggs, you know I'm coming for you.

Speaker 8:

You know I'm supposed to be texting you, probably sometime this week.

Speaker 6:

I hope you're ready for me.

Speaker 5:

Oh, Chris is ready. I'm sure he is.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, because I know I got to start that I haven't really been running too much, I've just been focusing on the weightlifting, but I feel like I've noticed this some the strength in me in terms of like. I feel like there's some things that I've been doing, like the sit-ups, and doing like the declined bench sit-ups and being able to do so like a lot more reps than I've been able to do when I initially started, like things like that that I'm slowly starting to see like oh wow, I really just did that.

Speaker 6:

Um it's kind of weird because it's like I don't feel super strong just sitting here in the seat, you know, just chatting, but the moments that I'm at the gym and I get done with my sets I was like huh, that's easier.

Speaker 5:

Progress is motivational, isn't it, jack? Progress makes you want to do more. And since we've been talking about Tom and we'll mention real quickly at the at the start of the race report but Tom's a partner with us Stoked Metabolic Training, stokesfit slash riseandruncoaching At the top of our Facebook group page. There's a link there.

Speaker 6:

Tom offers a discount to the members of the Rise and Run family offers a discount to the members of the Rise and Run family and just to briefly mention so, if you guys are curious about it, you can do a complimentary or free initial meeting with Tom to kind of feel like if it's your vibe. But also I will let you know I will be doing soon like before and afters, like what you to expect within the first month and what of what I did versus, obviously, month two and so on, and so forth.

Speaker 6:

That's cool jack so you can kind of see like these were what my goals were and what I asked tom to help me with, and like to just show you progression. It's hard to see at first, but it it is there I think it's four weeks, you start seeing it.

Speaker 3:

Eight weeks people close to you start seeing it, and 12 weeks everyone else sees it.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, I think that's kind of yeah. Yeah, I think I've been doing it for a month and a half now, I think, okay.

Speaker 5:

Maybe two months.

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah.

Speaker 5:

It's been a little while.

Speaker 3:

We're starting to notice it. So you're almost to that eight-week mark.

Speaker 6:

Wait till marathon week and guys, I'm gonna be muscle woman she'll be bench pressing us all.

Speaker 5:

I know I was gonna say I'm not gonna challenge her to an arm wrestling contest anymore I challenged my boyfriend believe it or not? Did you oh yeah.

Speaker 6:

I was like you want to try it? And he's like no, you're gonna beat me, babe. I was like no, that's not true, come on. And he's like, no, you're going to beat me, babe. I was like no, that's not true, come on, look at those muscles. I see him now because he does baggage for adults and everything. I got him on the right, but he won on the left. I got to work on the left, you got to work on the left side.

Speaker 1:

Balance.

Speaker 5:

Well, good, jack, that's good no-transcript. But on the other hand, they kick my tail when I go there. So, yeah, I got, I got tomorrow. So I'll actually run to physical therapy it's only about a mile and a half away. Uh, do my PT. Walk back. And then other days I'll be doing my aqua jogging and working out at the gym. So I'm excited the way things are going there.

Speaker 7:

Me too, bob. I went to my PT after marathon weekend. Great. He gave me some great at-home exercises that I've been doing in the gym to strengthen my legs, which in turn helps my knees, and I've been running and I have not been having as much pain at the end of my runs as I've had before.

Speaker 5:

So hopefully it's all working. That's great. That's great. I have finally come to the conclusion that I have to do something more than just run and I have to exercise to maintain the balance in the muscle groups in my legs, because I think that was the cause of some of my injuries is just getting out of balance. But it's all good. I'm excited we're back on the training schedule. We've got a goal, let's go.

Speaker 6:

I just realized, you guys, when I get really muscly, guess what I am? I'm jacked, Jacked.

Speaker 5:

Good night everyone, I'm jacked. Laughter, laughter, laughter everyone. Thank you for listening laughter. Tune in again next week.

Speaker 7:

We can't top this. It's over laughter.

Speaker 5:

Drop the mic, walk away my mic's attached to a stand, I can't drop it, laughter good one.

Speaker 5:

Jack. Hey, let's move on. I can't drop it. Good one, jack. Hey, let's move on, because we can't top that. That was good, hey. I know I don't usually do this, but yesterday, may 6th, was a big day in running history. And I'll give you a hint. I was the only person who was alive when this event occurred, but I don't remember it. It occurred in 1954. I was just a couple months old.

Speaker 5:

This is the 70th anniversary of Roger Bannister running the four-minute mile. Now, if you're not familiar, that was regarded as the most significant athletic achievement of the 20th century. It was one of these deals where at the time and you've read about this, okay, this doesn't occur much anymore, but you've read about this Physicians were writing that the four minute mile could not possibly be broken by a human being, and any human being that tried would probably die in the attempt. By the way, dr Bannister was a physician. He wasn't when he ran. I don't think he was when he ran his four-minute mile, but he served out his life as a physician. He died. He lived to be 89 years old, but that was a big deal. 70 years ago, the four-minute mile barrier was broken. But we had other significant events this last week, significant anniversaries.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, bob. So on Saturday was the eight-year anniversary of the first Facebook group I created, run Disney Motiv um, which is where you and I actually met.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, I think if, if it was Saturday was the anniversary I joined on Sunday.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you were. You were literally like the first person that joined that group. Um, I was just really trying to see if I could get 10 people to join the group and have a little bit of motivational um run Disney-ness and it had turned into this amazing thing. That has, in turn, helped me meet all of you, Um, and it's been just a great thing oh it's.

Speaker 5:

It's definitely one of the things that led us to here.

Speaker 1:

Oh, absolutely Cause. Then that created the other Facebook group, um, which is for first time marathoners, Um, and that's where the rest of you well, that one, you, you, you started it, but we actually did that one together. Yes, yes.

Speaker 5:

Yep.

Speaker 6:

How big has your family grown to Um?

Speaker 1:

um for the first. I think both of them are around 2000 runners, um. And then on Sunday, um Cinco de Mayo, I actually celebrated my one year anniversary of becoming a run coach, or hold on. Well, I guess it's one year anniversary of starting my actual business. I've been a run coach for longer than that, um, and I just wanted to mention again, if anybody is interested in Run Coaching, my website is Running With Alicia. There's always a link in our description, and I do offer a $10 discount to Rise and Runners, so you can just mention that, and I always offer free consultations. So if you're not sure, if you want to run coach, um, or you just want to chat and see what it's all about, you can always shoot me a message, email, um, I'm happy to talk to you.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, when Alicia just to. When Alicia says the description, the link is in the show notes the show notes for each of the podcast episodes, you reminded me of something, alicia Cinco de Mayo is the two-year anniversary of my last surgery on my Achilles tendon, and the reason I remember it so well is that I was trying to get him to give me tequila as an anesthetic, and they wouldn't do it they wouldn't even give it to

Speaker 1:

me as a painkiller oh my goodness, I was so upset, too bad yeah two years.

Speaker 5:

Two years, yeah, and it's pretty much, to be honest, between the knee and the Achilles. It's pretty much, to be honest, between the knee and the Achilles. It's pretty much taken two years to come back. But I'm excited about that. But I'm also excited about the anniversaries for your stuff, alicia. That's really cool. Thank you. You've been a, you know, you've been a real valuable contributor to the Run Disney community.

Speaker 1:

I appreciate that.

Speaker 5:

Bob. No, I think that's neat. I think that's neat.

Speaker 7:

Hey friends, let's visit with our guests for the week. We're asked all the time on Facebook and our Zoom calls in person about Run Disney events like how to train, what shoes to wear, how should I eat, how should I do a weekend challenge. Our next guest, scott Douglas, wrote a book that puts all that information in one spot in his new book, run Disney the official guide to racing around the parks. Let's welcome Scott to the Rise and Run podcast. Scott, thanks for joining us.

Speaker 5:

Man, it's good to have you here, yes thanks for having me.

Speaker 7:

So, scott, let's start first. Like what's your background? I know you're contributing area for Running World. Anything else like your running history?

Speaker 9:

Oh sure, so I've been running for 45 of my nearly 60 years. Just, you know, started in school and never really stopped. As we're talking, I unfortunately am not running. I had to have a foot tendon repaired. But when I'm healthy I do about 3,000 miles a year or so.

Speaker 9:

Oh my, wow, I've always just run primarily. I mean, I've, you know, had different phases in my running life, but I've always, you know, the constant has always just been like I love the process and the, the, the just, I love being, I love just being out on a run. Um, at times in my life I've been more serious about racing than other times, um, things like that. Professionally, yeah, so professionally, I've been a writer, editor about running for a little bit more than 30 years Currently. Most of my work now is for the Runner's World website. I do some writing for outside and I've written or co-written I think it's 14 books, including including the disney one. That's a yeah and I'm not. As I'm not, I'm not. I at least like to tell myself I'm not as boring as it might sound if they're like oh, I run and then I write about running.

Speaker 9:

Um, yeah, I don't read running. I at night. I don't read running books, I just read fiction oh, we were, we were chatting.

Speaker 5:

I mean, we want to talk about this book tonight, but we were chatting before you got here. Uh, some of the books you authored or co-authored with meb uh yeah I had a chance to read 26 marathons, yeah and uh, meb for mortals. Good stuff, good stuff. So we're, we're glad you're here. How did this particular volume come to be? Does someone approach you, or it was your idea?

Speaker 9:

So this, yeah, so books can. Yeah, books, you know, can work either way, Like you have an idea and you pitch it, or a publisher knows they want to do a book and then they find the right people to do it. This one was the latter. Disney, an editor at Disney, contacted me and asked me to be the lead author, I'll let you know, working along with Jeff Galloway. And then, and then we also had Molly Huddle two times come in to do some writing for us. But this was a case where, you know, run Disney knew they, you know, wanted to put out a book and and so they, they made it happen. I was sort of surprised one didn't exist already. It seemed sort of an obvious thing.

Speaker 5:

There have been some, but none that I know of as complete as this, as thorough, from soup to nuts.

Speaker 9:

And I should say it was originally scheduled to be published in the spring of 2020, which is one reason why it's like um, oh, um, there was one, which is one reason why it's like, oh, there should have been one, but, um, yeah, so, like I, I wrote the book in 2019 and you know, all this stuff was supposed to come out. Um, it was going to be at I it's, you know, at a run disney event in the spring of 2020 is when it was going to be published and there's going to be a big, you know big to do and all that sort of stuff. And then it's like, okay, well, we're, we're postponing it to the, to the fall, you know.

Speaker 3:

And then, okay, well, we're postponing it, so yeah so so, um, we mentioned this before we started recording and you mentioned it just a second ago. Did you work directly with Jeff Galloway in the actual writing of it, because I know Jeff also has written several books? On running and different things and y'all kind of work together.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, so Jeff, like I mean the, you know, the editor and Jeff and I would have meetings and stuff and it was known that Jeff would write sidebars. There's the main chapter and then sidebars. That was Jeff's role in that is to give his advice about, given his vast experience, training people for run Disney events and being at them. Yeah so you know sort of a clear division of Scott will do this part, jeff will do that part, sort of thing. But I like I met Jeff gosh in the like 30 years ago, like there used to be a magazine called Running Times.

Speaker 3:

And yes.

Speaker 9:

I was the editor and Jeff was one of of our columnists, and so I've known jeff for quite a while.

Speaker 5:

Running times, yeah, yeah I'm I'm the resident old guy here, scott, so I kind of, in fact I believe I remember finishing the uh over in honolulu not the marathon but the great aloha run and I think the first thousand runners or so got a three month subscription to the running time and I was. I was in the nine hundreds, but heck there's 30,000 runners. That wasn't bad. So yeah, pretty cool, pretty cool. Um well, I'm going to ask an obvious one Do you run? Run Disney events.

Speaker 9:

I have. Actually it sounds crazy, but I've never been to one be in part because of what I was saying about all the um, all the different um, you know, postponements and stuff. And then when, when it got republished, when it got ready to be republished or published, you know this time around, then, um, I was invited. There were a couple of times where I am I was invited, kind of like. It was kind of weird, like like two days before, hey, you want to come down to florida this weekend?

Speaker 5:

I live in maine uh, yeah, yeah, I saw and um, yeah, so so it hasn't happened yet.

Speaker 9:

Actually, it's kind of funny. It's sort of like, um, one of the books I've co-authored is is called advanced marathoning, and I've never really run a good marathon, so I I brought the the outsiders, uh, um, more seriously, like more seriously. So, like you know, we wanted the book to be this like two-part thing, like a basic running book and then and then the run disney aspect.

Speaker 5:

Uh, oh, yeah, and um, you know so anyway, yeah, I think it does that very, very well and we can talk about that more if you want. But I like the motivational part, the getting started, the nutrition facts, the equipment, shoes. You know it really is an excellent starter and then it does get more detailed into Run Disney.

Speaker 3:

Okay, so you haven't run a run disney event? Yes, but um what race distances have you done and do you have a favorite race distance?

Speaker 9:

oh, well, so I've raced everything from 100 meters up to the longest race I've completed was like 55 kilometers. Okay, I ran a marathon in high school, some, yeah, so I I mean, I've you know, for for the first 20 years of my running I was, you know, sort of in a very you know sort of conventional thing, like you run in school, you run in college, and I and I kept going and you know, just did a lot of, did a lot of road racing, um, and I was pretty good for a while, like, um, like a one, oh, eight half marathon, um, yeah, that's pretty good.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, Just let that slide by, right, that's pretty fast.

Speaker 9:

It's like another lifetime, but, um, I understand Um. So so right now, like I'm much more attracted to um, like like longer trail races or my things, um, and, and that's also just, I mean like I still do hard workouts and stuff because I enjoy that challenge and it. You know, obviously if I'm going to race, that helps. But my favorite thing now is just being in the woods, you know, on a trail for 90 minutes or whatever with, sometimes by myself and sometimes with one or two friends. That's that's like my favorite thing. And running I don't blame you.

Speaker 6:

That's how I am too like, if I can choose a relaxing day, I tell you what you probably, if I had a whole day to myself, I I'll go out on the trails.

Speaker 10:

Yeah.

Speaker 6:

It's one of my favorite places.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, as you were speaking, I was going to say you got a friend in the upper right there Scott Jack's going to jump in. So, going back to the book, the Run Disney part of it, did you run? Did you interview Run Disney Runners? Was it just from the people at Run Disney that you talked to? How did the knowledge of this book come to about?

Speaker 9:

Yeah, so I worked very closely. The Run Disney people were very helpful. I worked very closely with them to sort of accurately hopefully accurately talk the the phenomenon that is. That is from disney. Um, um, I did a lot of reading. I talked to john use who is uh, that's on the races he's a race director yeah, so it was. It was more. It wasn't like talking to specific, um specific individuals because I didn't want to. That can sort of skew like ones otherwise, otherwise I have to. I interview 30,000 people, you know.

Speaker 5:

Sure, yeah, but you get a flavor for it. I think I know you talked about building your community and and getting into run dizzy communities. Yeah, that seems to us that seems to be the big calling card for the run disney events. Did you notice that? Did you have any feedback on that?

Speaker 9:

yeah, it's um. I mean, I've always, I've always thought like how that's one of the great things about running is like there are so many ways to be a runner, you know, um, and and there's and combine that with another thing I've always thought about running is just like we're all like you. You know, you all wouldn't have never met each other otherwise, right?

Speaker 9:

oh, very true, that's absolutely you know I mean like there's running has a way of bringing, bringing us together that you know that. So so few other activities do you know I agree. Um, you know, like my main running partner is a woman 15 years younger than me, you that. So few other activities do I agree, my main running partner is a woman, 15 years younger than me.

Speaker 9:

She's probably my closest friend. I get it. We wouldn't have met, otherwise. The community is so important in all of running, but obviously especially important in Run Disney, I think it's. You know, if you have these two common interests, that's like two plus two equals seven or something. You know. Yeah, there is, I'm sorry one plus one equals seven, not two plus two. Two plus two can equal seven, it's okay guys, you take this running and the Disney thing both.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you're talking about the synergy, and I agree. I couldn't agree more. We see it in this and I will refer to the folks who we are talking to now as our family. And we're so excited to see them when we get to Disney and it's, and they are so excited to see one another and that's wonderful.

Speaker 9:

And any surprises in writing the book, anything that you didn't expect from the run Disney world or Um, I was a little I'm sort of um still a little amazed that the whole um, the, the, the percentage of people who are running in something other than you know quote normal running gear yeah um their costumes, yeah, um, yeah, I mean because you know I know, like, I know a few people who you know outside of disney things, of running costumes and stuff, and I have a couple times like run a race, like like sort of you know not not goofy, not goofy dress, but goofily dressed, and you know, the whole time I'm thinking like why am I, why did it, why did I think this was a good idea? So so yeah, so that was yeah to me, like as someone who hasn't done it, that that was something that was sort of pleasantly striking that it's such a such a thing and, um, as this whole other element that you know, I mean, there are other, obviously other races, non-disney races, where people run in costume but not not to the not to the extent that

Speaker 3:

they do in in disney world, yeah I feel like it's the the real world running. I say that with quotes is not like if you see a costume, it's the real world running. I say that with quotes. If you see a costume, it's like oh, that's interesting.

Speaker 2:

In.

Speaker 3:

Disney running. If you don't see a costume, you're like, oh, that's interesting you do it once.

Speaker 6:

You do it all the time after that.

Speaker 3:

Once you get in you get hooked.

Speaker 5:

I've seen it. I've been, and I've seen it. I've been running Disney since 2016. And I've seen it flip. I've seen. I mean, they were costumes back then, but now it's almost the norm.

Speaker 7:

It's almost like a Comic-Con type event, yeah.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, and Bob, I take full credit for your beginnings, as you should, jack, as you should.

Speaker 5:

You and Brittany Charbonneau the two of you talked me into it and it's been fun. Yeah, the surprise is I was going to sound like a 70-year-old man wearing a wig and Tinkerbell wings and a tutu.

Speaker 5:

But we love it. We love it. Well, like I said, Scott, 47 Disney races started in 2016. I still enjoyed going through the book because it's a nice concise. I'll tell you what I liked. As much as anything, and maybe you can comment on this a little bit, I liked the sections you had that just were about running, where you had a nice concise section about nutrition and race nutrition, and one that's near and dear to my heart is preventing and recovering from injuries.

Speaker 9:

Yes.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, any of those sections you'd care to elaborate on. I would say real.

Speaker 9:

Briefly, maybe the the nutrition section, because it's such a thing that people um like, obsess about um, um and, and they don't need to for the most part you know yeah yeah, um, you know, a good runner's diet is is the same diet that everybody should be eating, right, like lots of fresh food and, and you know, not a lot of processed food and all that sort of stuff. And then, and then you know there's a whole separate sport nutrition thing. That is important, um, especially, you know, in a long, in a half marathon or marathon, but it shouldn't make or break your race. It should be something that helps you do what you're capable of. It's not like a magic pill that's going to do it.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, that's a good point, and also in the back of the book, which I thought was really great, was the healthy eats section, where you broke down all the healthy places to eat and something else that we were asking. Only one of our resident plant-based people talked about plant-based places to eat in Disney which people don't really know about.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I happen to not eat meat, so when I go to my run Disney event. I'll go to the.

Speaker 1:

I love that you included that in there, cause it is important for everybody to be included in the healthy options.

Speaker 5:

So yeah, yeah, we certainly do get a lot of questions about it, so there's a good resource. I also and this is just me being a run Disney fan I enjoyed looking at the pictures, all the medals that was kind of neat.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, the photo editor will thank you. I don't, you didn't have. Okay, I was going to shucks.

Speaker 5:

That's too bad. I was going to ask you about some of them, ask you which were your favorites, but it yeah, it was fun. It was interesting to look back. We've seen some of them. We've got a good friend in the family here Alan Young. Alan's run 32 Walt Disney marathons now All 31 at Walt.

Speaker 9:

Disney World and the one at Disneyland Wow yeah, pretty impressive.

Speaker 5:

We're interested that the Disneyland races are coming back. Did you have a chance to write about that much? I got to remember. I think I remember reading about.

Speaker 9:

The half was in there.

Speaker 5:

The Dumbo Double Dare yeah.

Speaker 9:

Yeah.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, but then of course we got another one coming up in September.

Speaker 7:

So, scott, this is great, I know you've written a lot of other books.

Speaker 9:

Do you have any other books coming out soon? I'm currently my co-author, pete Fitzinger, two-time Olympian, and I am working on the fourth edition of a book called Advanced Marathoning, which first came out in 2001. So this is the fourth edition. So when it's it's, you know, you can tell by the title it's. It's it's for people that are trying to really really race the marathon, so that that should so we're. We're working on that now Turn so it'll come out in 2025.

Speaker 7:

Scott, thank you for your time and this is a really great conversation and hope to see you again at that run Disney race.

Speaker 9:

You got to stop by. Yeah, okay, I'll look for you all there.

Speaker 5:

Thanks for having me. What costume will you be wearing?

Speaker 4:

Nevermind, nevermind.

Speaker 5:

We'll drop the mic on that one. Thanks, scott. So there you go. It's a good book. I will be candid and honest. There's a lot of information in there that I was aware of. However, scott does a really good job of putting it all together and if you're new to run Disney, I would have really, really liked to have something like this going into my first, or even my first couple of races. Very worthwhile.

Speaker 5:

Hey friends, you know we're still working on the 101 Dalmatians idea for the 5K at Marathon Weekend. Things are coming along. We'll have an announcement soon, but we've been working with our friend Alec at Hawaiian Pizza Apparel and we've got some mock-ups on some shirts we think you're going to like, but we'll have more on that very soon. Just wanted you to know that it's still an idea we're very excited about. We're shooting for 1,001, but we'll see how we do. 101 would be cool. How cool would that be to line up all in the same corral and not Corral P? It would be another one, and I think that would be really neat. Hope there's no fire hydrants on the course. That was something interesting. Some of our friends who were volunteering said hey, I'm going to be a volunteer at one of the water stations, but I want to play also. What can I do? And so we need to work on ideas for that. Somebody said to have a bowl to pour the water in for the doggies running by. Ah, shucks, That'll be it, hey.

Speaker 5:

Changing subjects just a little bit, our good friends at the We'll Run For podcast have their virtually live race this Saturday. I'm going to be doing that. They do a wonderful job with this race. I got my race swag got my We'll Run For Socks. I haven't tried them on, but their metal. I don't know who they go to for their metals They'll tell you on the podcast, but they're wooden and they're gorgeous. They really, really do a nice job. While I'm thinking of our buddies over there, congratulations, will Runfor on your 100th episode. A lot of podcasts get started. Very few reach number 100. Congratulations.

Speaker 3:

And speaking of Will Runfor, I'm really excited about this. We are going to do our own version of Podcast Family Feud in a few weeks, but we need your help On our respective Facebook pages. So that's the Rise and Run Podcast Facebook page and the Will Run For Facebook page. We'll run for a Facebook page. We will have a link to a Google form that everyone can fill out so that we can say we serve it 100 run Disney runners, so please be sure to provide an answer to each question, and the form is going to remain open until we get 100 responses.

Speaker 3:

If you log into it and it's already closed, it don't freak out. It could, just because you're our number 101.

Speaker 5:

That's right. You're the 101st Dalmatian, that's right, and the top five answers will go on. The board Survey said Ding ding, ding. Yeah, we're ready to go. That should be fun.

Speaker 3:

I think we're going to have some good questions Also. Fun fact I was in the audience of Family Feud one time.

Speaker 5:

Wow.

Speaker 3:

It was so fun who was the host, steve Harvey.

Speaker 4:

Okay.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, recently.

Speaker 4:

Okay, okay.

Speaker 5:

Okay, my friends, it's time for.

Speaker 6:

The.

Speaker 5:

Race Report. As mentioned earlier in the episode, the race report is sponsored by our friend Tom Stokes at Stoked Metabolic Training. I think we said all we need to about that so far this week, but I will remind you the link is stokesfit slash, rise and run coaching. That information is pinned to the featured section on our Facebook page. Still playing a little bit of catch up, my friends, there's one we didn't want to leave out the major that occurred while we were off running springtime surprise the London Marathon. Let's visit with some of our friends who completed that race. All right, friends, I know it was a couple of weeks ago, but by golly we can't not talk about one of the world majors. We have friends with us today who ran the London Marathon while we were running around Walt Disney World. These friends were running around the greater London area. I'd like them to introduce themselves now. Hi, it's.

Speaker 4:

Rob from SIDCUP in South East London.

Speaker 11:

Hi, it's Amy from Hertfordshire.

Speaker 8:

Hi, I'm Katie. I'm originally from Pocklington, but now I live in Bedford, just north of London.

Speaker 10:

Hi Bob, it's Mark. I'm from Norwich in the UK, which is on the East Coast.

Speaker 5:

Hi, mark, thanks, Gosh. Guys, this was short notice. I appreciate all of you showing up like this. Let's talk about this wonderful event Now. I can see the folks here Raise your hand if this was your first London Marathon. The folks here raise your hand if this was your first london marathon. Ah, katie, you're first good deal, so I'm gonna let you go first. Then, katie, give me your general impressions of this year's london marathon I don't even really know where to start, it was just so.

Speaker 8:

It was just such a fantastic day like I just didn't um, like it was busy in the starting corrals but like I'm used to that with like run disney, um, but the crowd support along the course, like on in disney when you go on like the highway miles, there's not a lot of support there, but pretty much all the way around the course there was people there, um, and how I managed to see my family who come to see me twice, I don't know, because there was just so many people around the course.

Speaker 8:

I'm glad you did yeah, um, but no, it was, it was fantastic. I mean, I could have eaten like jelly babies probably about every 50 feet if I'd wanted to.

Speaker 5:

Way too much sugar you just be running around. Yeah, but it's one of the it.

Speaker 8:

I mean that there was a new story this week that it surpassed the single day total for fundraising wow running on behalf of a charity um, that's how I got my place was. It was just amazing. I was part of that experience, um, of raising, raising the money. So, yeah, it was just I don't even know where to start with how amazing it was just to be part of the event.

Speaker 5:

So, cool, we'll come back. I'm not gonna we're not gonna end it there. Let me talk to some of the others. Mark, that's a question I'd like to ask how did you get in? I think it's a well, I don't think. I know it's a little easier for you being in the uk to get in than it is for us foreigners, but how did you get in this year and how many times have you run London before?

Speaker 10:

So this was my second time running it, bob. I actually got in last, so I've got in by ballot entry luckily twice in three years, and apparently there's a 15 to 1 chance, so I don't know how I managed that that's that's in the uk outside the uk I think it's a thousand times harder than that.

Speaker 5:

I think it really is.

Speaker 10:

I haven't looked it up, but it's very, very hard so yeah, so um, but I was actually had a place last year, but I had to defer last year due to injury. So then I was running it this year and, um, I was also, I, my sister got for a charity play, so I was running with her as well. So, yeah, so my second time London, um, this one was so much busier than the the 2021 one I did. It was like Katie has said. It was just um the people on the course of so many of the spectators we had family down and they were saying, like the queues to get in the uh, the underground stations and the train stations were just like hundreds of feet long, so it was so well supported all the way around. The wall of noise was just, it's just continuous I hear about.

Speaker 5:

I hear about those in events like London, new York, boston. Yeah, that's really neat, amy. I'm going to guess, with the crowd as high as it was, that the weather was pretty nice this year Is that a good guess.

Speaker 11:

Yeah, it was. It was cold. It was cold but it wasn't raining, so I think that definitely helped draw the crowds out. I went and spectated last year and it rained really, really badly. Um, we were kind of in one area that time, so I don't know how the crowd supports around the course, but yeah, I think the weather definitely helped bring people out how many times for you, amy? Um, this was my second, so I yeah.

Speaker 11:

I did 2022 through a charity and then, after I don't even know how many times I've entered through the ballot I think it must have been 10, 11 times and ended up getting it for this year's okay, got in the ballot, so you're the second person to get in by ballot.

Speaker 5:

That's pretty cool, rob. How did you get in this year?

Speaker 4:

uh, so this year? Um, interestingly well, like mark actually, I'm very similar to mark I 2021 was my first year I actually got in by the ballot that year. Um, but I also got in. I was meant to do it last year but deferred um due to injury I can recall that, rob, yeah yeah, yeah, um, but I actually got in because my club is in the borough of Greenwich and so they get like a community oh that's a neat place each year and um at the end of each year we sort of do a club draw for um that ballot place and I won, won that place.

Speaker 4:

So that's how I got in pretty cool.

Speaker 5:

That's, that's interesting and fun. That's a great way to get in, let's see. I finished with you, so let's start here. How about highlights from on the course?

Speaker 4:

rob could be a person, a spectator, a costume, a landmark yeah, uh, oh god, I, I kind of get into like a bit of tunnel vision, um when, when I'm out there running. So I didn't really remember past tower bridge um too too much because, uh, I was, I was starting to hurt a bit as well. So, but, um, in the first half, of course, uh, I definitely paid more attention and it was a bit more comfortable. So, um, yeah, the good thing is, because my club is in the borough of Greenwich, that they like volunteer, they're like part of the volunteer and marshalling crew out there. So at Cutty Sark, which is one of the best places on the course in Greenwich, they were all marshalling there. So it was good. When I was going past there, I kept seeing like lots of people from my club cheering me on and giving me a boost, so that was very good.

Speaker 5:

American friends.

Speaker 4:

Rob is not referring to the whiskey. Wow, I learned something new there. Yeah, Cutty Sark whiskey.

Speaker 5:

Yeah isn't that a Scotch whiskey? Yeah?

Speaker 4:

I think probably it must be.

Speaker 5:

I think it must be yeah yeah, but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about the landmark, the ship, correct?

Speaker 4:

yes, yeah, tea clipper.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, good, uh, let's go. I'll come backwards this time. Amy, what's a highlight for you?

Speaker 11:

um, I mean obviously, aside from like seeing my friends and family, because that's always that's a biggie yeah um, I I was having like a really hard time sort of around Canary Wharf, which um is like the business district and um sort of coming out of there. We came into um like the pride mile um, and they had like the drag queens on stage and they were singing and as you're running through there, like everyone's got their hands in the air, like singing and like moving, and it just really like pulled me out of that kind of pumped you up a little bit yeah, like that and um, so that was that stood out for me there, uh, in respect to sort of that highlight and yeah, that was really fun neat

Speaker 10:

neat mark you're up like amy was seeing my family. That was just after tower bridge. So when you go into the business district where the sort of course, you start weaving in amongst sort of some of the the larger buildings and you lose the sort of landmarks and things like that. So that was good. We saw them, a lift. But then also when we came into about it was mile 24 or 25 we came up behind someone carrying a washing machine or something and we went past and it was actually a lady and it was the first time I'd seen that and and she was she was quite small as well and you could just see the determination on her face and we were struggling.

Speaker 10:

But like two miles to go, we thought if this, you know, if this person has gone this far and is this close, then we can do it. So we gave her some words of encouragement as we went past and it was just really, it was really inspiring.

Speaker 5:

So this has to be somebody who's trying to get into guinness.

Speaker 10:

I can't think it was the third or fourth washing machine I'd seen on the course it was.

Speaker 5:

It was the first lady I'd seen that was carrying one and obviously they're quite heavy and yeah to do that they are it was amazing so oh my goodness, I I don't believe I've ever even heard of that, but that's amazing. Now, katie, did everybody take all the good stuff, or do you still have some highlights left?

Speaker 8:

I've still got a couple of highlights. I'll bet you do go ahead um, so London Marathon's got a couple of different wave starts, so I started in red but about between mile three and four you meet the blue start and as I was coming up that bit there was a band playing and they were doing like Sweet Caroline and just seeing a whole road of runners just go bum, bum, bum.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 8:

It was quite early on in the race, but it was like just one of those surreal moments.

Speaker 8:

Um, and also, you've possibly never seen them, but there's always people who are running for save the rhino and they're dressed as rhinos oh, that's cool so running past a couple of those is just like, yeah, I don't really feel like I'm trying as hard as they are because they've got got these. So that that was some, some highlights, and I know London relatively well. But before you get up to like the final bit on the embankment, we went through some areas that I really didn't know, so I had no idea where I was, no idea how far it was, and then you come up to the embankment, you can see like the millennium eye and I'm like, oh, I know where I am now. I've walked down here before, so that was that was another like mental boost as well, just like knowing that actually I was at a point where I could definitely walk and finish. It's like it's like when you get to Hollywood Studios on the marathon and you're like I know how far it is to the end. Now I can do this yeah, it's a good.

Speaker 5:

It's a really good feeling, isn't it?

Speaker 8:

yeah congratulations.

Speaker 5:

Oh, final thoughts, guys, rob you were. You were talking earlier about the excitement in the atmosphere. Now, before you get to that, you were going for a goal time, I think. Correct, or?

Speaker 4:

yeah, I, I originally like in the whole build-up I was like I'll just keep it to seven-minute mile, which is three-hour, three-marathon time. Pretty darn quick Rob.

Speaker 11:

Yeah.

Speaker 5:

Pretty darn quick.

Speaker 4:

And then, yeah, I got on the day and I started, and you know, the first few miles I was sort of sub-three-hour pace, so I thought I'd go with it. And then got to Tower Bridge and that's where I I really started to uh, I there was a bit of a breeze that day and and on tower bridge you could really feel the breeze as well as the the great atmosphere, um. So it's at that point you know it's about halfway I'm thinking, yeah, I'm, I'm probably gonna um whine a bit in the second half and it's going to be a bit of struggle. So, yeah, I did cramp up towards the end as well. So I was 308 in the end.

Speaker 5:

But pretty darn impressive, pretty, pretty impressive, rob. Really is, really is, but we're talking about the crowds.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, no One thing I wanted to say is, out of all the marathons I've done I think I've done 18, now like um a couple of well, three in america, of course, um, but yeah, as I think mark was saying earlier, or maybe katie, just um, the atmosphere is the best out of all the marathons I've done. Without doubt, it's like 2021. I was very impressed with, with the crowds, um, there, but it was just post covid, so perhaps this year was when everyone was out and uh, yeah, it was like five, six deep, pretty much all around the course and even in the first three miles everyone's out and, yes, all the way around, it's constant, wow.

Speaker 5:

That's impressive. Does it stay that way throughout the day? Guys, the middle and the back of the Packers still getting the love?

Speaker 10:

Yep, yep, it's constant, so constant for everyone.

Speaker 5:

That's fantastic. I hear that about the big. Of course there are three here in the US. I hear that the same thing here that all the way through the crowd is out there for everybody. They've had a little bit more refreshments by the time the five, six, seven hour crews come around, but there's nothing wrong with that either. That's fun.

Speaker 10:

Did any of you run past the people who were handing out free beer outside one of the yeah, yeah, yeah, they were handing them out, weren't they in um, in the red, in the red cups actually?

Speaker 8:

so yeah, yeah so and I'm not a beer drinker, but I was like I could really go for one of those did you miss that, amy?

Speaker 11:

I didn't see a reaction no, I, I did see, but yeah, like I was like that tempting, but probably not not the best idea I'll wait till I'm done.

Speaker 5:

Huh yeah yeah, good stuff. Um, I'm gonna go real quick and ask what's up next and maybe when we see you over here in the states, at disneyland or anything like that. Let me saw amy, I was with you. Let's start with you. What's up next and when might we see you back over here?

Speaker 11:

yeah, so I've got a little bit of a break now until um. At the moment I've got a half marathon in September, which is the Great North Run, which is a pretty big event. Uh, half marathon over here isn't that the?

Speaker 5:

isn't that the biggest half marathon in the world?

Speaker 11:

yeah, it is yeah. Again, I got lucky on the ballot on that one, so I'm really looking for that, and then I'll be back over in the usa for dopey in january dopey in january.

Speaker 5:

Awesome mark, how about you?

Speaker 10:

uh, next month the end of next month I've got what's called the great manchester run, which is, um it sort of weaves all around the city center of manchester. That's half marathon, so that's quite good fun. I did that a couple of years ago, so I liked that one. I've got that one, and over in the US I'm doing my first dopey next January. I'm excited for that.

Speaker 5:

I'm excited to see you two so far. Let's see who else is coming. Katie, how about you?

Speaker 8:

So I haven't currently got anything booked. Uh, over here in the UK, um, I'm eyeing up a couple of different halves um, possibly the Oxford half in October or maybe the York marathon.

Speaker 5:

Um, but I'll be back over in January for Dopey awesome second Dopey, so I'm excited for that second awesome Rob, are you going to make it unanimous for doping?

Speaker 4:

It's a clean sweep.

Speaker 5:

Wow.

Speaker 4:

I'll be there in January for dopey.

Speaker 5:

I was not planning on it, but I think you know the story. I'm doing dopey number five, so I'll see you there. That's fantastic, Brilliant, fantastic. My friends, once again, thank you so much for, on this short notice, joining us. Congratulations on finishing world major number X, number one for you, katie.

Speaker 4:

Yep.

Speaker 5:

Congratulations. That's great, and boy, I'm excited about seeing all of you in January over here for Dopey.

Speaker 4:

Thanks, Bob yeah.

Speaker 8:

Thanks, Bob.

Speaker 5:

Thanks Bob, over here for dopey. Thanks bob. Yeah, thanks bob. Yeah, thanks bob. Just a bit of a follow-up folks who weren't able to join us carrie was there so happy. Coming off tower bridge so amazing earned her third major star. Our buddy, michael, was there and danielle. Danielle got selected through the lottery first time Best marathon she's ever done. Crowds were wonderful and she with a time of 5.27.30, pr.

Speaker 5:

All right, my friends, back to the regular race report now. Now I need to make a brief explanation here, kind of like last week when I was talking about how much I love friendship bracelets and I enjoy getting them from everybody and I think they're fantastic and wonderful, but I have too many and I can't wear them all. Well, the same kind of things happening with the race report. We love it, we love the enthusiasm, we love seeing all of the reports that all of you make. It's great. I hope it continues to grow. We will do everything we can to recognize you. But I need to abbreviate things just a little bit. So while I promise you I and most of us read every word of your reports and I really do I'm going to have to summarize them kind of quickly as we go through. So let's get started and we start back on Wednesday, may 1st, in England for the Boconic or Boconoc or I don't know.

Speaker 5:

Anna runs these races, just to mess me up. I know she does. This is a five mile race in Los Witheo, cornwall, los Witheo, cornwall, in England. Hannah, I don't know why can't you just run in London. I can say London, this one was a mess, and I mean that literally it had rained. It was a trail event. It was muddy as could be. She slipped, skidded, dawdled through the muck and the mire. What a mess. But she finished. Let's go to Saturday in Ashburn, virginia, the Greenway 10K. Sharon was there. Sharon PR'd this event last year and won her age group. She won her age group again this year, but she was 50 seconds slower. However, the course on her Garmin measured six and a half miles and other folks in the race were saying the same thing. According to her Garmin, she said a 10K PR. I say we give it to her. Her Garmin, she said a 10K PR. I say we give it to her. Marissa was at this event also.

Speaker 7:

Marissa did the kids race with her two children and Jacqueline did the Great Saunter 50K around the perimeter of Manhattan Island in New York City. It's not actually a race. Everyone goes at their own pace. The winner gets nothing more than a photo on the race website. They've been doing this since 2015.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, that sounds interesting. John, One of our friends from Will Runford did that, I think, last year or the year before. Yeah, Conway, Arkansas, the Toad Suck 10K. Shelby Allison. Cute theme Mixing toads and Star Wars for the medal. The medal featured a toad with a lightsaber. Shelby Allison great progress from her last 10K two weeks ago and a new PR.

Speaker 7:

And in Palm Beach, Florida, we have the Mind and Body Connection 5K. Sabrina did that, so it's perfect weather knocked out a new 5K PR and free Wawa treats after the race and for a South Jersey girl, Wawa is probably king.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, sounds good. Sabrina in Wells Maine. Heidi ran the Maine Coast Half Marathon.

Speaker 7:

And the other theme park in Orlando, the SeaWorlds, Orlando 7, Seas 5K. It was a very warm day. Our friend Mary was there with her grandson Nick. He ran as fast as smile said. The race was lots of fun, Monica, on course. Entertainment was fantastic with tons of characters. They even had mimes and Ravi. About half the course was in SeaWorld.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, sounds like a good one. Half the course was in SeaWorld. Yeah, sounds like a good one. In Tampa, the run with Meb10k. Three of our friends Jennifer, laura, ann and Judy ran this one. I don't know if they ran the entire race together or not, but I know they were together. They had a little mini Rise and Run meetup Great local race, free Girl Scout cookies at the end and I noticed that everyone got individual photos with Meb at the end of the race. I got to do this one one of these days. The Olay.

Speaker 7:

Olay 5K in Lakeland, florida. Mary Jo ran that. It was a night race, it was still hot and, to her surprise, it was also a trail race. She walked most of it. She had lots of company and probably one of our first finishers by finishing walking through a giant skull.

Speaker 5:

I think so, john. I don't recall that on a race report previously of anyone running through a giant skull. A couple of big events this weekend and one of them occurred in Indianapolis, indiana, the One America 500 Festival Mini Marathon, more commonly known as the Indy Mini. We had a bunch of folks there. Let's go through them. Angela lives in the area, runs this one every year. A highlight for her is the Gold Mile just as you enter the racetrack, which is lined with pictures of fallen Indiana soldiers. Brooke was there. Kathy was there. Kathy was there wearing Star Wars gear.

Speaker 5:

On this May, the 4th run, met up with her daughter at the finish, janie. Janie finished her first half marathon, had a goal of two hours 30 minutes, finished at 2.29.29 APR. Jeff Jeff finished his 102nd half marathon at the Indy Mini and his wife Chris finished number 97. Kaylee was there. Kaylee knocked this one off about an hour faster than the only other half. She's done, obviously, a PR. Mary and Nikki were there. Sheenaena was there, commented that it was hot and tiffany and her husband ricky slowed up a little bit for the heat, but that gave him more time to enjoy the crowds. Tiffany kissed the bricks at the finish and lele's 5k in fort smith, arkansas.

Speaker 7:

Our buddy, jo Joe, did that one. He says a very small but loving race with the memory mile. He came in first in his A group and he got a Subway gift card.

Speaker 5:

Yay, joe. Youngsville, louisiana. The Seize the Day 5K Allison ran this one. She ran it for her niece Nova, who is their epilepsy warrior, her other niece Sydney, who is their epilepsy warrior. Her other niece Sydney ran her first 5K. Placed second in her age group Sydney first 5K PR In Holland, michigan.

Speaker 7:

the Tulip Time 5K. Our friend Bridget did that. She finally did a run outside of Florida, enjoyed the cooler weather and a beautiful course.

Speaker 5:

I you're, Bridget. You picked a good time to leave Florida because I ran the Florida Shamrock distance classic 10 K in St Pete actually at Fort DeSoto that Saturday, First time in a long time that I went to an event where I was trying to do something more than just finish. It really really was warm. I think it was 75 at the start, 75 when I pulled up, I think it was close to 80 at the time of the start. Not much shade down there at Fort DeSoto. I did slow up the last two miles but I still managed to beat my age, that is, I came in in less than 70 minutes and got an age group second place finish. So I'm happy with that. Great job, Bob.

Speaker 7:

Thanks, jeff. And in Lewisburg, pa, the girls on the run mid-state PA 5K. Our friend Jennifer did that. She had a wonderful time. One of her students asked her to run with her and she finished a few seconds ahead of her. And there's her student's first 5K. So that's a PR and Jennifer also.

Speaker 5:

PR'd by over two minutes. Nicely done. Sue knocked out two runs on Saturday a 5K in Lebanon, connecticut, and a two-mile event in Middlebury. Now if you've been following, you know Sue is chasing the 169 cities in Connecticut. These were number 151 and 152. In the morning run the 5K, she broke 30 minutes in a 5K for the first time in a long time. That's a great pace.

Speaker 7:

Sue Got an age group third place finish the Cinco de Miler in Chicago Illinois. Laura ran that one. It was warm but not a PR, but still really happy with her performance.

Speaker 5:

In Chicago, the run to remember the Fallen Officers event. Jodi ran this one. Ran it with her husband, who isn't a runner but has been working out for 21 weeks now, since having a heart ablation last November.

Speaker 7:

Way to go and in Townsend, tennessee, the Smoky Mountain Bigfoot 5K Jimmy ran that it was a total downpour and the flooded tunnel on the course Didn't stay for the festival. He was just ready to go home and dry off. We all know that feeling.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, there were a couple of events that were really wet this weekend. That was one of them In Nacogdoches, texas, the Fredonia Rotary Rumble 5K Sherry. This was a Star Wars themed event and if it wasn't wet it seemed to be hot most places. Sherry did 20, 30 intervals, kept moving at that pace, finished first in her age group. Finishers got lightsabers at this event, john.

Speaker 7:

Okay, I might have to go there sometime. The Spartan Sprint 5K in Fayetteville, North Carolina Mary Beth did this and her son did a two-miler. It rained all day, it was super muddy, but she had an amazing race. Son Barrett completed his first two-miler.

Speaker 5:

So, Barrett, you got a PR In Queens, new York. The New York Roadrunner's Mindful 5K Megan Megan earned her way to the New York City 2025 Marathon on this race, the Door.

Speaker 7:

County Half Marathon. In Peninsula State Park, Door County, Wisconsin, Tara and her husband Carlos ran this. They ran in Star Wars gear, which is a plus Beautiful place to run in the spring. Carlos PR'd by four minutes and Tara had a course PR minutes and Tara had a course PR.

Speaker 5:

Let's take a look we got. Let's take a look. We had one weekend long event, saturday and Sunday. That was the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania marathon weekend. Like I said, we had a couple of really big events, bunch of rising runners in Western PA. For this the the weather looked bad but the thunderstorms that threatened on Sunday held off. Let's see who was there. Alyssa did the steel challenge, which is the 5K and the half. Her children, peyton and Colton, completed their first 5Ks. So congratulations, peyton and Colton, on your PRs. Then Alyssa ran the half with Jen and Carly. Alicia ran the half. This is her third Pittsburgh half and a seven-minute PR.

Speaker 5:

Andrew, the Steel Challenge 5K and a half pr in both distances, not too shabby. Andrew carissa, around the half first time she's ever heard the rocky theme played on a accordion as they were heading up a hill. Don't think I've heard that either, carissa. Not really sure I want to, but I'm glad it was there, glad it worked. Chrissy ran the 5k and then a marathon relay Commented you ever get a chance to put a team together and do this Pittsburgh marathon relay, do it. She had a good time. Julia did the steel challenge a 5k and a half. Lori did too. Lori took it kind of easy on the 5k. The half she said was hilly Western PA can be hilly Wonderful community support throughout this run. Jackie was there. Jackie was there as a pacer for the marathon. She paced the seven-hour group. Way to go, jackie. Finally, in Pittsburgh, victoria and Tim ran the half marathon Tim's first ever timed race. Well, we know what that means. Victoria said she saw a few rise and run shirts out there and that the medal, if you look at it, basically confirms that Pittsburgh was indeed built on an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Speaker 5:

Moving now to Sunday in Philadelphia, pennsylvania, the nation's largest 10-mile run, the Broad Street Run 10-miler in Philly, a cold and rainy morning but we had a bunch of rise and runners there and we're sorry that Greg couldn't be with us tonight because Greg was one of them. I think this is Greg's third Broad Street run. I know I did one with him a couple years ago. Greg tells us that the weather wasn't great, but it was a whole lot better than last year. I think it really poured last year.

Speaker 5:

This is, as I mentioned, the biggest 10 mile race in the US. I think it's mid 30,000s in the number of runners. I don't have it in front of me, but somewhere between 30 and 36,000 runners at this thing, so it's really crowded, especially at the beginning, which meant that Greg couldn't really had a really hard time committing to his run, walk, run intervals in the first mile. That led to some hamstring issues by mile seven and he missed his POT that he was looking for by 90 seconds, which is, you know, pretty close over a 10 mile event. Nine seconds a mile Uh, not a PR for Greg, but his second fastest broad street.

Speaker 5:

His slowest was with me, by the way. I was pacing him, so that was his slowest. Sorry, greg, I'll do better next time. Uh, greg did want to thank Michael from. We'll run for for pacing him this time. Let's talk about our other friends. Who was there? Allie without an E, was there? Allie set a six and one half minute PR, just a touch shy of a Walt Disney marathon POT. I think it's close enough, allie, you ought to put it in anyway.

Speaker 1:

So proud of you, Allie. That was an awesome PR and we'll get that POT.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, I think she will.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 5:

Brenna was there. Brenna met up with Kay at the finish line. Kay was also there. Kay was dressed as Wonder Woman and we were talking about it with Scott Not a whole lot of costumes at this race so Kay attracted a bunch of attention and she said that when she was out there the shouts of go Wonder Woman kind of spurred her on. All right, let's see. Donald was there. Donald just missed a PR but secured his proof of time. Katie was there. Madison Madison's second time at Broad Street Enjoyed this one Highlight of the afternoon. That's my editorial comment. Highlight of the afternoon was saying hi to Greg. Madison didn't say it was the highlight of the afternoon, she just said she said hi to Greg. But I know she meant to say it was the highlight of the morning, slash afternoon and Nikhil was there. So a good turnout in Philly for the Broad Street Run.

Speaker 6:

All right, you guys. So I'm originally from Ohio, so I've heard of this race, but I got to try. It is called the flying pig half marathon out in cincinnati, ohio, so we had a few runners out there. We had jennifer, who you guys get ready for this. She got a photo ringing the pr bell by an 18 second pr, so you know what that means. All right, and then we had jennifer. It was. This one was a huge event for her because it was right before her next big surgery made a. She also made a great new friend on the course. Her name was pat and they shared a beer. Shots tracy girl this photo on our feed of jen, jen and tracy. It was such a good pre-race photo because they were dressed in these amazing costumes where they were literally pigs in space. I think that's amazing. Any race in a costume is always the best race.

Speaker 4:

They look great.

Speaker 6:

And then, of course, we had Kelly, who ran that race as well.

Speaker 5:

This is a big event, jack. This is another one that's right up there and we're going to talk about actually I think we talked about it yesterday the Indy Mini Marathon. There were a couple Indy Philly and there were a couple indie philly and cincinnati a couple big events this weekend. That's not to say that the one in frederick maryland wasn't a big event, the frederick running festival half marathon, marissa kind of a misty rain in frederick maryland and she dropped her headphones in the mud. That wasn't cool and your little stomach upset at mile 11, but hey, finishing just a tiny bit over three hours, which for Marissa is a half marathon. Pr Kristen was also in Frederick for this event.

Speaker 5:

In Binghamton, new York, steve doubled up at the Binghamton Bridge Run Half Marathon, also ran a 5K. Second time doing this double. The half starts at 7.30, the 5K at 10 o'clock, so you can't dawdle. You got to get back for a start of the 5K. Other than the rain, it was a great day. Steve PR'd the half, got his POT for Disney, disney, changed to dry clothes, dry shoes for which he credits alley for having to pair and finished the 5k in his rise and run shirt the orange county half marathon at newport beach, californ, california.

Speaker 7:

Our friend Cecilia ran that one and Alan and Grace Young ran that one. They have great finisher photos and his friend Russell from Springtime Surprise and Nathaniel finished the Broad Street run in Philly with Greg and all them. Just an interesting thing, I saw a news article on this. The winner of this race for the marathon got disqualified.

Speaker 4:

Oh really.

Speaker 7:

He took water from his father oh yeah, I saw that article, which is technically against rules, because in that race you must take it from qualified aid stations.

Speaker 1:

Oh, interesting.

Speaker 7:

Interesting rule. That's an interesting thing. I feel bad for the guy.

Speaker 4:

I do too.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, but interesting little story on that one I saw it in the news this morning.

Speaker 5:

Well, while we're in California, there was a race in Windsor, the Windsor Half Marathon. Abel ran this one through North California wine country. Had a little cramping problems during the race, special at the end. But Abel set a new PR and improved by catch this nearly 30 minutes over his last non-Disney half marathon way to go Abel proud of him.

Speaker 5:

Yeah. And Pittsburgh, the UPMC Pittsburgh half marathon. Carissa was there and ran that one. In Schaumburg, illinois, the the Chicagoland Spring Marathon Half Marathon. And 10K Kelly did the 10K distance, her first 10K in a couple of years and a two-minute PR and proof of time for her. North of the border, in Vancouver, british Columbia, the BMO Vancouver Marathon. Brian was there, as was Jenna. Jenna says lots of downhills, many runners had some trouble at the end but Jenna set a five-minute PR and an official time of 3.55,. Stephanie and Aunt Emma ran the Unit 5K.

Speaker 5:

In Lake Worth, florida, amber, the Margarita Miler 5K. How appropriate for Cinco de Mayo. It was 80 degrees at start time I mentioned earlier. It certainly was, and it's getting warm here in Florida. It's just the way it is. She ran, walked this one at a party pace and was rewarded at the finish line with a lei and a bottle opener key chain Very nice. In Huntington, new York, the Huntington YMCA 5K Megan said it was a nice, cool day. Finished age group. Second Way to go, megan.

Speaker 5:

In the White Mountains of Conway, new Hampshire, there was a Rebel race. This is a special edition race in New Hampshire and it'll probably be the only time it was up there. I wasn't aware of these Rebel races. They are primarily downhill runs. People love them for BQs and for setting personal bests. So let's see, jay and his brother was there. Jay didn't PR, but his brother did Lori. Lori PR'd by more than 20 minutes. Lauren Also PR'd by 20 minutes and got a Disney World proof of time. Lauren says next year, if they have it again which I don't know that they're going to have this event again in Conway, but if they do, lauren's doing the full.

Speaker 5:

Rachel and Ken were there. Rachel's fourth half but first time looking to push the pace, looking for a proof of time. Nailed it, nailed it with a PR. And Riley Riley scored a rock solid run. Disney proof of time. Can't wait to do another Rebel race. Any experience with those guys? I've never done one of these primarily downhill races. I understand that they can be fun. They do lead to personal bests, but they're not as easy as they sound. That the running downhill after a while gets tiring on the legs and then if you get to running downhill all the time, if the course levels out or if it goes up at all, it feels like torture. Yeah, anyway, our friends did well. I congratulate them.

Speaker 5:

In Shelburne, vermont, the AutoMaster Shelburne 5K. Andy was there. Second ever event for Andy. He was going for a sub 30 minute 5K. Didn't quite make it but ran fast enough for a two-minute PR and an age group first place. That AG1 got him a pint glass.

Speaker 5:

In Houston, texas, the Cinco Cinco 10k Brandy. There was some serious rain and I saw the photos and I think there was a video on this one it was pouring. Brandi's surprised that the race even went, but she hung in there and finished and her outfit looked terrific. And wrapping up the race report, we actually had an event today, tuesday May 7th, the Two Bears 5k at the Rose Bowl finishes. At the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, california. Megan and her husband ran this one, one of the most fun 5Ks they've ever run with comedians Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer. Really fun party on the field as well afterwards. And that winds up the race report for episode 137. Winds up the race report for episode 137.

Speaker 5:
